How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

hey @BlueBay it's lovely to hear from you again 💙

depression can make it very tough to feel motivated enough to even do the basic things, sorry it's been difficult for you. getting out of bed and showers are ones i struggle with most when i'm feeling low too, you're definitely not alone.

would it be possible to break these tasks down into smaller steps? would it be helpful to chat to hubby or a friend about how you're feeling, maybe they can help motivate you?

sending you gentle hugs 💙

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hey @BlueBay has anything happened today, or does it feel like this has been building up for a little while? I can see that the past few days have been hard with your health as well and managing a bit of uncertainty around that which can get pretty overwhelming. Like @rav3n said, maybe small steps is the way to move through today, but if that's difficult too, that's okay even small things can get hard when we're struggling

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi friends

I saw my dr this morning. BP is better though I still need to monitor it.
I then went to my psych appt. And most of the session I cried. My psych is amazing caring and genuinely supportive. We talked about a few issues I have and one is to try and talk tonight to hubby. It’s been a big block for me to not talk. But I will try. If not my psych will organise a session with both of us.

I’m very depressed. Overwhelmed and emotional. My thoughts and mind are very dark.

as I’m not seeing my psychologist for 3 weeks my psych suggested she see me weekly.

I’ve got another headache today.

I just want all this to stop. It’s torture relieving trauma, not seeing my dad, fearing I may never see him again. 🥲🥲
