How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Good afternoon @BlueBay,

How are you feeling today? 🩵

I am so happy to read that your 8 year old graddaughter brings you a sense of joy and lightness. Have you talked with her this week?

I understand what you mean about music and walking, they really can help but sometimes we need more support for the bigger things sitting underneath... and my gosh, what you have shared sounds so painful. Your feelings are more than undertsandable and they deserve to be heard.

I am so sorry your family have blamed, abandoned, and rejected you... of course you are needing them to hear you and support you. This is so much for any one person to go through.

I am so glad you are able to reach out here for support. What else do you need right now? 💛

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Tonight I’m scared, overwhelmed, emotional and panicking.

I’m going to a funeral of a family friend on Friday. Hubby will come too.

My sister called to say that my brother wants to attend as well.
I can’t go now. I don’t want to see him hear him or have anything to do with him.

the reason is - HE WAS ONE OF THE FIVE PERPETRATORS that sexually abused me.

don’t know what to do.

im sorry im in so much pain at the moment. I may have to go to hospital. Doubled over with stomach pain.

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Your circumstances sound very much like lovely partner's. She, too, feels.the same way as you and expresses almost word-for-word the very same questions.

Although I am a very flawed partner, I am slowly understanding her past and the effects of her trauma. She dreams of those events each night, and I wake.her if they sound too terrible. But I I have hope that by completing the SANE programs and learning more of each other, she will find some much needed peace in her life.

I think you both have just been given an extremely challenging start in life; one that most would have no conception of. And that isolation is a close second in producing pain and hardship to all the events that you have unfairly endured.

I so hope you find your tribe in this forum and be reassured of your value and worth.

Please be kind to yourself, since you so deserve this by the forum members and yourself.

Hi @J_Oz

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it. I’ve been on Sane forums for a very long time but the past year not very much. I needed a break.

it’s good to see that you’re supporting your partner.
I know with my hubby he is supportive in ways but doesn’t really know what I’m going through. It’s hard

lately I’ve been feeling very abandoned by my own parents. I feel rejected and not part of any family.

thank you for your support. You’re so kind. Hope your partner is doing ok.

It really does sound like things are feeling big for you right now. @BlueBay

You are doing the right thing by seeing your GP and taking time for yourself, changing meds can be a lot for the mind and body to adjust to. Big hugs. 💛

I am curious, what is helping you to get through each day at the moment? Are there any small glimmers coming your way? ✨

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @AuntGlow

things that get me through - this week I don’t have many appointments so I’m going to go slow. Take my time in doing housework. Rest. I am going to listen to me.
my BP is a worry. Last night I was going to go to ED but then I decided to lay down and take a med my dr prescribed. Went to bed. Had a very disrupted sleep but this morning my head is not throbbing like yesterday.
im staying in my pjs today stuff getting dressed I don’t care.
I think for me I go full on with doing things and then I hit a wall and break down or get sick.

I feel like my head is so full of fear and overwhelm and I dont know how to slow my mind down or even to lessen the fear.
