How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

It sounds like your psychologist has been able to hold space for you and help you to grapple with these feelings of anger (which are so, so understandable by the way). @BlueBay

Ow, that inflammation sounds really painful for you... what did your doctor say today?

I am curious to know what you're looking forward to about your holiday? 🥰

What is it like when you allow yourself to feel what you're experiencing without any judgement or trying to change it? Maybe you're allowed to simply feel this anger? Because it is hard. And it is painful. And you're allowed to feel hurt. 💛

H @AuntGlow

saw my dr this morning. No inflammation but my thyroid wasn’t good. So he’s increased the medication.
but my gut is still not good.
looking to sitting by the pool, swim. Try to relax and read my book. Sightseeing. Beach walks. just try to relax. Weather will be very warm which will be nice.

it’s really hard for me to “fully allow myself to feel” I don’t know why. Maybe I’m scared of breaking down. It’s like I feel all these different emotions but only a little bit. I think if I was let loose with all my emotions I would probably be in hospital.
I do t know what to do to feel it all. I think I need to but I’m scared.
I found a photo of my dad that was taken 8 years ago. He was happy and smiling. Do you know I can’t look at the photo. I did this morning for a few minutes and then I broke down terribly.

I want to let all my anger out but where do I start.

I am glad there's no inflammation @BlueBay. I can understand how gut and thyroid concerns would be overwhelming though... what are you doing to nurture your body atm?

Actually you kind of answered this in the next part! haha

Relaxing and walking by water sounds really nourishing.

Feeling our emotions is hard, so having resistance to it makes complete sense. It really is scary at first, and it's important to know what feels uncomfortable vs. unsafe. I think this is where exploring them further in therapy can be helpful, because you have someone holding that space for you. Could this be an option? 💛

It sounds like there's still so much vulnerability around this, and I am sure it would have taken a lot out of you to sit with those feelings, even for a moment.

When I feel angry, I journal or talk everything I am feeling out loud in my own, safe space. I put on music that allows me to feel my anger too. Punching a pillow and stomping the ground can be really cathartic throughout this process as well. Just some ideas. 🫶

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

hi @AuntGlow

i will bring up with my psychologist on how to sit and be with my emotions and how to feel it safely.

I have been a bit destructive to myself. today i walked with a friend which was good. but later on i went to the bakery and bought two cakes and one danish pastry for myself. I was deciding yes/no do i or don't i buy one. i ended up buying one. I do this as punishment because i wasn't strong enough to NOT purchase it . and then i get so angry with myself.

i have tried writing in a journal before but each time i end up angry and wreck the book. and then i stop. i do enjoy listening to soft relaxing music or songs.

why does life have to feel so hard all the time?

hope you are well? sorry i always forget to ask you how you're doing

Hey @BlueBay,

Please let me know how you go with this. 💛

Aw I so feel you on the eating front (I do the same). How can you be kind to yourself and acknowledge that you had a human moment doing a human thing?

It sounds like anger is something that's really asking for your attention right now. I know it's an overwhelming feeling, but I must say, your body and mind are great at communicating with you. What happens to the anger when you listen to soft, relaxing music?

Life really can feel hard, hey? I think both honouring how you're feeling and also looking at the things that feel easeful could be helpful. Can you tell me one or two things that feel lighter/easier right now?

It's okay! You don't have to ask. ☺️ But I am well and appreciate you checking in.

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

hey @AuntGlow

something that feels lighter/easier right now - i know that when i talk to my 8 yr grand daughter little A i feel good, happy and love our chats. she makes me laugh.

when i listen to relaxing music/songs i feel ok but this feeling doesn't last long. Same as when i go for a walk - the 'good feeling' or 'what i have achieved' doesn't last long.

Content/trigger warning
i don't even know how to be kind to myself. Am i punishing myself for being sexually abused as a child by 5 different guys; or is it because i feel no one believes me in my past childhood abuse so therefore in my head i feel that if i was hurt now then it would feel real. (not sure this makes sense) ??

Am i punishing myself because -

my parents have abandoned and rejected me

i am to blame for 'wrecking' the family

i was told by my mother that 'i have betrayed the family'

i am seeking help; so this is my way of seeking it

i stop my meds in the hope that someone can help me and give me some love/support

gosh, this is looking like i am a really bad person??

Those are some really hard beliefs to be sitting with @BlueBay

I can't see anything in what you're sharing that sounds remotely like a bad person. You sound like a person who's been through some really hard times and are doing your best 💜
