How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

hey @BlueBay i'm hearing that you're having a rough time with your meds at the moment. the trial and error process can be really frustrating, and it's hard when there's no predictable timeline around when you'll find the right meds for you. i'm so sorry that it's been a lot, sending you gentle hugs 💙

my friends have dealt with similar battles around meds too, but eventually when they did find the right ones, they were glad they had kept trying.

are you able to chat to your GP or psychiatrist soon about this? is there anything the community can do to support you tonight? i hope you take a few deep breaths and remember we're here for you 💙

hi @rav3n

I just think it’s pointless

I’ve spent so much money on meds

getting done specially made through a compound pharmacy yo find out now they’re not right

what’s the point

I’m exhausted

all I need is to sleep and even that is difficult

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

it really does suck when there's lots of money involved, i know that the compound ones tend to be more pricey @BlueBay

it might not feel like it now, but every 'error' in the process helps you get a step closer to finding the right one.

please be gentle with yourself, and keep letting your support team know how you're going too - i know you're trying your best to power through this, and i wish i could make the process easier for you.

the lack of sleep/issues around sleep can REALLY tip our mood, i know i feel 10 times more exhausted if i'm not sleeping well. what something that helps you feel calm/relaxed? whether it's reading, watching movies, lighting scented candles, having a bath, chatting to someone, etc. is there a calming activity you can do tonight?

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @rav3n

I ended up having an early night.

im awake now at 5.40am. The birds are making lots of noise outside!!

Today I’m going to rest and have an easy day as tomo I have to work 8.30 - 5.30pm (long shift) as I’m covering another staff member who’s on leave.
I know tomo night my back will be sore and I’ll be really tired.

The only good thing is that I have a list of jobs to do and the day will go fast.

usually crochet helps me feel calm but have t done that for a week or so. Lost my motivation.

thanks for your support xx

taking it slow and resting up sounds like a good idea, hope you feel a lil better today 💙 @BlueBay

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @rav3n

today is gloomy cold and rainy.
Back is a bit sore.

feeling a bit overwhelmed and emotional

I found an old letter I wrote to my dad (never posted) and started to read it.
well I shouldn’t have read it. The emotions started to pour out. I was sobbing so much. And then it turned to anger. Now it’s self sabotage thoughts.
the anger is real. The sadness and hurt is real. It’s so hard to move on when I can’t see him.
😢😢

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

aww no, it's tempting not to read those letters hey. i'm so sorry to hear that it's brought up a lot of heavy emotions again @BlueBay

i can see how it's hard for you to move on without seeing your dad. i imagine he loves you a lot and wouldn't want you to carry this pain around.

take your time, let out those tears, and remember that you are loved and cared for. you deserve to heal and move forward 💗

I know things were feeling rather heightened for you last week @BlueBay.

How are they sitting with you tonight?

Just reflecting on your last comment to me and I can relate to so much of it - sending really big hugs your way. Body challenges, the unsent letter to your dad, feeling tired/annoyed/fatigued - it sounds like you've been holding onto so much... if you could take a big breath in and let go of anything by sighing it out - what would you want that thing to be? 💛
