How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hey @BlueBay, thanks for sharing your experiences with the community!

I can relate to how you feel and I am conscious of my body shape too and that I am getting older and need to be more aware of extra weight that I am carrying. We do see a lot of images on social media which can make us feel like we are not what is expected in society, but I have learnt to find a balance in my happyiness and how I look. Which comes with being a little heavier than I would ideally like.

I know from my own experience and having the support of exercise physiologist that we do carry water too and it can be discouraging when day-to-day there's not a lot of change but if you stagger it out, the progress is way more noticeable. l We can see more gradual changes over longer periods of time which I have found more rewarding and representative of how I feel. Rather that weighting ourselves every day which can bring on stress if we don't see the result we want. Maybe you psychologist said soemthing that you could benefit from in the short and long term.

Anyways just some thoughts I wanted to share about my own experiences!

Take care

hi @RiverSeal @tyme @Shaz51 @AuntGlow @Ru-bee @Eve7 @Snowie @oceangirl and others I have missed .....

today is a special day - it's my beautiful granddaughter little A's 8th birthday. A few of you may remember when i announced she was born all those years ago. Where has the 8 years gone?

So much has happened. But little A has grown into a beautiful, smart, empathetic, kind and happy little girl. Our love for each other is beyond words. We chat daily before school and she always ends the call with 'i love you nonna'.

we and the boys are meeting at my daughters house tonight for cake and presents. it will be nice to see everyone tonight.

cold here today so i thought i may as well cook a veg soup for tomorrow. monday's i work so its easier if i come home and dinner is done already. I am also making some sausage rolls and mini quiches.

i am very frustrated today with hubby; even just little things are making me sooooo angry.

have a good day everyone xxxxxxx

Oh, what a beautiful day @BlueBay 🥹

I hope you have a lovely evening and get to celebrate little A with your family - how wonderful to be proud of the human she is growing into.

I am sorry that body stuff is coming up for you... I feel this way often as well and it can be all-consuming at times - it's hard to love our bodies as they are, especially when we are seeing 'perfect' pop up in our social media scrolls. I think sometimes thanking our body for all the amazing things it facilitates, like helping you to connect with your loved ones (like tonight), to move you around, to allow you to express your joy, to help you be the wonderful person you are, can kind of help us to soften into a different place - a potentially less critical one? If you can, maybe you can give it a go and let me know how it feels. 🥰

Hi @AuntGlow

I can’t even begin to thank myself or my body in a positive way.
im in a vicious cycle loop. lost all motivation to do anything apart from the basics at home and work.

this morning I was sobbing so much. I found a letter I had written last year to my dad but never posted it. I started to read it and the tears started.

im so tired. And when im so tired everything annoys me. Irritates me ti the max. I get even more emotional. Fatigue sets in. I’m currently laying in the lounge with heater on. Woke up at 4.45am to take dog outside then tried to sleep but couldn’t. Now I’m ready for a nap.
I don’t want to see anyone today. Home alone as hubby is working today.

Hey @BlueBay

I get the same when I don't get enough sleep, hope you've been able to squeeze in a nap. It sounds like this has been a really hard morning for you, which could be exhausting in itself. Are you able to take it easy for the rest of the day?
