How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

Oh wow, this would have been very dysregulating for you @BlueBay.

It sounds like your mind went to all possibilites in an attempt to protect yourself, which is so understandable.

I am curious to know how everything is sitting with you today? 💛

Hi @AuntGlow

today I’m ok. Although I still feel I shouldn’t work I was so scared.
The sun is out. I walked down the beach with my daughter. Stopped for coffee then walked back.
im outside on my deck trying very hard to read a book. Trouble is I'm not absorbing the words. Getting angry with myself

how are you going?

Hey @BlueBay , definitely, it's a great idea to speak to your psych. I hope you can continue working, but I also acknowledge that it can be so stressful.

I wonder if your psych can work on coping strategies with you? I guess we can't always abscond from challenges. I really hope there is a way to work through this. We are sitting with you. We know you are brave and your body is only doing what it knows to do.

Hugs.

Hi @tyme

I’m worried. I saw my dr this afternoon. He checked my BP and it was 175/110. That’s very high. He said keep a check on it. But it’s not helping because I’m worried. I’m on meds already.
dont know what to do.

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Worry and stress can certainly affect BP @BlueBay . As he said, keep it in check. Do you have your own monitor at home? I know my parents record their BP every night at the same time.

Actually, funny story here... when my sister's family and I went to stay with my parents in Sydney for 4 weeks (that's 3 adults and 3 kids), my parents continued to track their BP... and yep! It sky rocketed when we were staying with them lol.

So yeah, there are so many external factors that can affect BP

Yes @BlueBay , @tyme

Going to doctors and specialists and the city puts our blood pressure up every time

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

I can also see that the worrying about your health will then in turn lead to health issues, so can we call it self-sabotage lol?

It's like when I couldn't sleep in the past. The more I couldn't sleep, the more stressed I got which in turn led to me not sleeping.. then eventually, I gave up worrying, and then... voila! Now things have changed with my sleeping.

I wonder if this is similar for you @BlueBay ?

needing to go on scales daily to keep track

my psychologist said that I should try to do it once a week. Cut it back. She asked the reason why I have to do it.
I need to know the numbers.
i can’t get my head around it and keep doing it.
im angry and hate myself

i look in the mirror and dont like what i see.

social media shows so much of where i want to be - but i never get there

Every time i try something to get better health I always have to stop. That’s a huge fail in my part.

im feeling like im a huge failure with so much in my life.
