Wind-down Wednesdays

Wind-down Wednesdays

Welcome to Wind-down Wednesdays where we work through a new grounding or soothing tool on every third Wednesday! 🌺

The purpose of this thread is

  • To learn more about various grounding/soothing strategies (can add them into your self-care toolbox)
  • To understand why we do it and how it works in calming us down
  • To create a safe space for members to visit whenever they need to wind down and catch their breath. You can work on the strategy by yourself here, or tag community members to join you (please be mindful of our guidelines - remember that members may not always respond immediately, and let’s not place pressure on others to respond)
  • Promote self-care and self-reliance in regulating your emotions!

Got a grounding tool/soothing strategy you’d like to share on this thread? Email us (team@saneforums.org) to let us know and we’ll save you a Wednesday slot! 😊

The first grounding tool we’ll be exploring is the 3-3-3 technique.

3-3-3:

  • Name 3 things you see: scan the space around you. For each item you identify, really focus on the details of it – what colour is it? Is it heavy or light? Big or small? What’s the texture of the object?
  • Name 3 things you hear: what are some sounds near you or far from you, are they soft or loud? Listen closely to identify them.
  • Move 3 parts of your body: it can be light or dramatic movements such as slowly rolling your shoulders, clenching and unclenching your fists, wiggling your fingers and toes, jumping up and down, shaking your wrists, etc.

So how does this work?

Well, when we’re feeling anxious and overwhelmed, it can sometimes trigger a stress response where our body’s fight-flight-freeze system is activated, which you can learn more about here: The Four 'F' Trauma Responses - SANE Forums.

This system is typically activated when our body identifies a physical threat, our body enters a heightened state of arousal to help survive – this can look like increased heart rate, increased muscle tension, decreased appetite, etc. When our anxious thoughts keep activating this heightened state of arousal, it can lead to a very dysregulated nervous system where our bodies keep reacting out of proportion to the threat, making it hard to calm down.

Moving our focus from internal things (like anxious thoughts/feelings) to external things (like what we can see/hear), helps us slow things down and calm the stress response. It gives our body a chance to focus on things that it perceived as non-threatening (i.e. identifying a cup or a bird flying around), which gives our body a chance to slowly calm down.

Practicing grounding techniques regularly can help regulate the nervous system with time. For more information, feel free to read this article: 3-3-3 Rule for Anxiety: How to Use, Scientific Basis, Other Coping Strategies

Now let’s give it a go! Feel free to share the 3 things you saw, heard and the 3 body parts you moved – and any other reflections you’d like to add.

Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

i find it so fascinating that activities like singing and swimming, even though they're very different activities, they can both play a big role in breath control and our overall health! @Appleblossom i am curious to know your thoughts on meditation, how long did you practice for? did you attend meditation classes or learn it on your own?

absolutely agree with you, all practices do indeed have their limits.

thank you so much for sharing 💙

Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

@Snowie @Ru-bee box breathing is a really good one, i like how easier it to remember and work through as well.

there's a few free breathing tools on the finch app, but if you want to access ALL of them, you do have to pay. youtube's got some great ones too so i guess we're not missing out on much!

@The-red-centaur ooo i love this, so it's almost like an intuitive process where you're going with what feels right/calm in the moment?

that's a really good point to bring up - how having these techniques and count rules can add stress for some, and it's great that you've found something that works for you. i also like closing my eyes when i'm working on slowing down, shutting out the external environment helps heaps. thanks for sharing 💙

Thanks @Ru-bee I've used it driving before too.

@rav3n I haven't heard of that app before. Will have a look.

Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

@rav3n Hello how are you? I have to say that was an excellent post. I am going to go over all the information and try exercises.

Answering your questions:

I breath through my nose but when I’m anxious I breath through my mouth.

I have tried the breathing exercises on Finch and I find them very good and they are timed. I like how it lets us choose how long to do breathing exercise.

I don’t have a go to breathing technique. This is something I’m going to work on because my anxiety through the roof.

Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

hey @Cuddlebear!! appreciate your kind words 💙

i feel the same, i breathe through my nose, and then when i'm anxious, i find myself breathing through my mouth more.

yes, i like that the phone vibrates when you need to inhale/exhale so i can close my eyes and just listen for the vibration change instead of keeping count!

sounds like a good goal to work on, @Snowie and @Ru-bee mentioned box breathing is one of the easier ones to run through.

it involves inhaling for 4 counts, holding for 4 counts, exhaling for 4 counts and then holding again for 4 counts. some people like to trace a 'box' shape while they do this (e.g. tracing the top line of the box when you inhale, then tracing the right side of the box for holding, the bottom line for exhaling and the left side of the box for holding again - it gives your mind something to focus on).

Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

@rav3n

I mostly breathe through my nose, but I have moments where I catch myself holding my breath and then have to consciously breathe. I don't handle it well when my nose blocks up when I'm sick because it just doesn't feel natural or comfortable for me to breathe through my mouth.

I use box breathing a lot, but also find a breathing technique @tyme introduced me too, really effective. That's the in the four, hold for two, out for eight. I've also found that two quick tips in through my nose, and a long breath out through my mouth works well too.

I have used the breathing exercises through Finch and don't really find them useful. I find it stressful trying to keep up with the timer. I've used Smiling Minds for breathing exercises. And I've recently downloaded Insight timer at the advice of my counsellor (to try binaural beats) but I've noticed it has breathing exercises on it too.

Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

yess i find that i hold my breath at times too without noticing it! oo the 4 in, 2 hold and 8 out sounds great! i like breathing exercises where the exhale is longer than the inhale, much more soothing for me.

you're definitely not alone in finding those timers stressful! @NightFury glad you've found some alternatives and thank you for sharing them. i'm downloading smiling mind and insight timer now, i'm keen to give them a go. 💙
