Functioning with ADHD

Functioning with ADHD

How do people function while living with ADHD? I’m pretty much non-functional, it’s taking a toil on my mental health, I’m stuck in constant rumination. I try to look for a reasonable solution, but I see the unreasonable

I’m out of answers. I feel like I must search for something, I’m looking at supplements options rn because those are easily accessible. I am not functioning

Does anyone know of something you can take to ease this brain fog, something that would help me concentrate, reduce fatigue and migraine pain, and calm my brain (like a herb)? This feels too much to bear, SI is high and I can’t use what I did yesterday to calm it because I have nothing left. My PRN isn’t working sufficiently, I need something else. I’m already thinking of SH to help managing the SI. I’m safe for now

Hi @creative_writer hearing how hard it is right now trying to get through to your next appointment. I'm not too sure about supplements or vitamins for brainfog and we might not be able to recommend any here incase it's veering into medical advice territory, but I know my mum has found lovely helpful staff at health food type stores who have been able to provide some guidance on vitamins and supplements. The best way to go would probably be to consult a naturopath, as they should also know what vitamins might interact with any medicines you're taking, or to speak with your doctor about this.

@Ru-bee there is still almost two weeks till the next pdoc appointment, which I know isn’t super long in the scheme of things, psychiatrists often have longer waits. I’m just struggling to get through until then. I’m also waiting to hear back from nutritionist (I’ve had some bloods done recently). Waiting is hard when I just want something to make it easier.

I did find something but i don’t think it’s something my supports would approve of, but it did help me stay safe while it lasted, but I don’t have anything anymore. I think that’s frustrating me. I know it was a shit coping strategy, but I was able to survive. I know I have self care which is great, but I’ve been struggling to manage my mental health just through healthy coping methods

@creative_writer it can be good to have that perspective that 2 weeks isn't too long in the grand scheme of things, but I absolutely get that it can feel like an eternity when you're struggling and need the support now.

It would be amazing if we could all be perfect and only ever get by on the healthy coping mechanisms but that's not always realistic. Sometimes it's just about doing the best we can with what we've got and it sounds like that's what you've been doing.

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@Ru-bee it would be ideal to have support right now, but it is not always possible.

It is hard just using healthy coping strategies. I’ve been asking AI for supplement options, but probably will need to consult someone. I’m desperate, I need relief, in a way
I wish I had access to the unhelpful strategy, but I don’t. I have to find something else to help me cope

Re: Functioning with ADHD

Good afternoon @creative_writer! Ru-bee has finished for the day, but I am here with you. It sounds like things are very heightened and feeling big in your body... what can we do to soothe or release? Are you able to do some movement of any kind at the moment? 💛 Also, it's amazing to hear that you're exploring what kinds of supplements could be helpful - I know how much things like saffron help you. Have you ever thought of seeing student naturopaths, etc? They are often really good and super affordable, because they are still training. ☺️

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@AuntGlow Maybe some stretches might help.

I haven’t ever seen a naturopath, I did once consult one through email. However, that one wasn’t comfortable with the idea of prescribing herbs while I was on medication. I didn’t pay for it (as it was just an email), so it wasn’t too disappointing. I could look into other naturopaths. It’s just that I feel stuck rn, my current medication isn’t cutting it. Depression, anxiety, flashbacks, SI and attention issues have been super bad. There is no way I could hold a job, I’m struggling to even volunteer or apply for jobs. I’ve noted things like caffeine may temporary help with anxiety, mood, migraines, attention but I can’t overdo caffeine without getting anxious. There are obviously other substances, but it’s obviously not healthy in the long term. My brain just feels too broken to function

I’m craving what I don’t have. I feel like I need it to cope, I don’t know how to cope now

Re: Functioning with ADHD

It would be tough to prescribe properly without being in person, so I think they showed a lot of care by considering your other medications. Have a think about it, it's always there - I have seen student naturopaths, osteos, and TCM's! @creative_writer

I know how hard you are trying to get answers and support yourself, so I can only imagine how tiring this all must feel... I know I have said this before, but I believe that things will shift in time. It's just (frustratingly) a slow, back and forth process of learning, unlearning, and integrating.

When you say, 'I’m craving what I don’t have. I feel like I need it to cope, I don’t know how to cope now', what do you mean exactly? 💛
