Functioning with ADHD

Functioning with ADHD

How do people function while living with ADHD? I’m pretty much non-functional, it’s taking a toil on my mental health, I’m stuck in constant rumination. I try to look for a reasonable solution, but I see the unreasonable

Re: Functioning with ADHD

Oh fair enough. Was it you who mentioned you were seeing a female GP @creative_writer ?

I guess if you don't know someone so well, then it's a bit difficult to just 'blah' everything. Since you are a bit of a writer, would you consider writing a few things down for your next appointment.

I hope you can stay grounded with the 5 senses activity.

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@tyme I haven't been able to find a good female GP I feel super comfortable with, it was a male GP (but he gives older brotherly vibes). I also need to make an appointment with a female GP because I think I have a yeast infection, but I am dreading making an appointment. Maybe there is a way to make the process less triggering, I might be able to do the infection swob myself.

i think building rapport with a GP takes time, I could write a few things and say whatever feels okay at the time. He did say he wanted to touch base next week to check up on me and for test results.

The grounding exercise helped a bit. I think I need to go slowly. I'm super drained. I'll try to be honest during my next psychiatrist appointment, but it is hard. I've engaged in not so good coping methods, I also probably should talk about disordered eating. I know supports are there to help, but the anxiety is so real

Re: Functioning with ADHD

I’m struggling to cope. I’ve tried to stay hopeful but I am struggling. I feel like I mess up way too many times, I know not all of my coping methods haven’t been healthy lately. I’ve resorted to those since I’m struggling to just rely on my regular coping, SI is hard, I did what I felt like I had to in order to stay safe. I’m still doing self care and have reached out to helplines more lately. I’m just trying to figure out what else I’m supposed to do. This struggle continues day after day. I feel like I’m somehow doing something wrong to be this way. I would’ve preferred an earlier appointment, two weeks feels like a long time to wait when I’m in crisis mode on a daily basis

I am useless. I’m sorry

I guess it's lucky that your worth does not depend on how 'useful' you are @creative_writer... What's happening for you hun?

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@Jynx it’s like everything I do I still feel like shit, I can’t break free from this. It persists and persists. I have resorted to self harm and other means to cope and keep me safe and help me manage SI. I can’t seem to just use self care to cope. The effects of the other means has faded and I’m left feeling like shit again, it still gave me relief for a good solid few hours. I know I may be feeding the cycle, but I feel like I’m out of options, it calms me temporary. Self harm also helps me resist worse thoughts. PRN helps a bit but isn’t enough. I’ve tried self care and reaching out for support, but it’s still hard. I fear my depression and cptsd are feeding each other. I feel constantly paralysed and unable to function. My mind drifts off to SI and body flashbacks. I can’t even drive and concentrate on the road properly. Normal things are out of the question. Job applications have to wait. Volunteer work has to wait. Can’t concentrate one prayers either, that leaves nothing. I have become nothing 😢

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@creative_writer that makes sense. I think SH is often 'easier' to access, and its effects more viscerally felt in an immediate way. When we are desperate for relief, the slower paths can become sources of frustration. It's definitely something that we can change over time, but it can be so hard to keep ourselves motivated towards those healthier paths when the emotions are so heavy.

You are so far from nothing. You're a survivor, a warrior, and a boon to the world - even on the days you can't see it.

Maybe take some slow, deep breaths, and you could always try a short, gentle prayer, maybe even one for some inner calm?

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@Jynx I think a similar thing can be said about non-self harming impulsive behaviours in terms of providing immediate relief. A lot of us engage in multiple behaviours. Maybe it’s not realistic to give up on all unhelpful behaviours at once. Self harm may need active working on because it is easy to access. The other behaviour I engaged in may melt away once I’ve run out (I almost have).

I wish it was easier to be easier on myself. I know it’s not my fault things have been super hard with SI and flashbacks, I know I’m doing the best I can. It’s just that my heart has seen too much, I get frustrated and inpatient. It’s lonely not being able to tell anyone what’s happening for me in my body openly. I know I’ve said details make me feel worse, but it’s like I keep too much locked in. I’m still trying to figure out how to balance it. I don’t want to re-traumatise myself (like in the past) but I don’t want to shut myself off. Maybe I don’t have to start off big, and maybe I could go at my own pace.

Trying to breathe. I’ll say my night prayers now, worn be able to pray for long, but it’s okay

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@creative_writer my psych called them 'external regulators' - anything we look for outside of ourselves. It can include healthy and unhealthy options, like SH but also talking to someone, online shopping, substances, etc.

Not inherently bad ofc, it's more just about introducing more internal ones as well - breathing, exercise, prayer/mantra/affirmations, meditation, etc. - because sometimes the external regulators are inaccessible, or harmful.

Hmm... maybe it's about finding ways to feel safe in your body when you do express/retell the story? Yes definitely gotta take it at your own pace!!

It is okay. I think that even when we can't put the physical effort in, the desire is still important. The universe/God still listens to that. 💜

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@Jynx honestly I don’t know what I’ve gotten myself into, this external regulator is now gone. Getting access is not going to be easy due to it not being readily available, it will require jumping through hoops and the GP may figure it out. I know people are saying to speak to my psychiatrist about it. I know I’m using it to cope with depression, anxiety and ADHD. I swear my brain is so weird, it reacts differently than a NT. It would’ve been easier to resist if I hadn’t been ND. I know I have to accept my vulnerabilities and work on them. I’m starting to feel more foggy and really exhausted now. I got through the morning, I got the SI to leave for a bit. I know I can’t keep escaping from them. Now I must lean onto other things to help me cope and resist the urges (I'm safe). Saying "I'm safe" sort of reminds me of why I don't want to be safe. Maybe I should focus on the reasons why I want to stay safe. Probably need to build on those internal ones regulators.

Content/trigger warning
I've just been thinking. Do you think I would be lying if I said that I haven't had my first sexual experience? It was without my consent and it was traumatic. I don't want my first to be this way.

I could start slowly and provide a bit of context about my experience, I don't need to dive into loads of details at this point in time. I am a bit scared, but that probably isn't surprising.

All we can do it try, some days will be harder than others. It doesn't mean it will always be that way
