Functioning with ADHD

Functioning with ADHD

How do people function while living with ADHD? I’m pretty much non-functional, it’s taking a toil on my mental health, I’m stuck in constant rumination. I try to look for a reasonable solution, but I see the unreasonable

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@tyme still have a bit longer to go and I’m almost ready for bed. I’m hoping to drift off by 10pm, it takes a while for it to kick in, but hopefully not too much longer

When will the day come where I feel better?

Re: Functioning with ADHD

I’m clearly not coping, my impulsivity is running high. I’m okay and safe, just feeling a bit uncomfortable from what I did

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@rav3n it’s feels super hard. I’m trying to remain hopeful but it’s hard. I’ve had to reach out to helplines more frequently, I’m hoping I can discuss it more during my next psychiatrist appointment in two weeks. I just have to get through those two weeks safely. Maybe I need to take PRN for longer, but it doesn’t feel like it’s been adequate so far, I’m still having strong urges.

I’ve had some floral tea and thinking of taking a shower to freshen up. I do find grounding, prayers and breathing exercise helpful too, but it gets hard when thoughts and flashbacks persist the whole day. I don’t know if I just need to give it time and I just need to keep trying. I’ve tried brainstorming, but I feel like something needs to change, just not sure what

Re: Functioning with ADHD

how do you feel about giving that peer support service a go? the free one that you mentioned last time? @creative_writer

i'm really glad to hear that you've continued to reach out to those helplines as well, please do keep reaching out as much as you need. i know you've also mentioned that you've tried to push away and distract from those uncomfy feelings, but perhaps learning to sit with it and let it pass might be something to work on with your psych next time you see them?

how do you feel about narrating things? it's a strategy i find helpful when i'm having intrusive thoughts - you just narrate each and every single action out loud (you can do it in your head too but it works better out loud). for example: i'm going to the kitchen, i'm grabbing a cup, i'm feeling anxious but i know i'm safe. i'll make myself some tea and go step outside for a bit, i'm opening the fridge, etc.

basically saying each step and bringing your focus to the present actions helps from being sucked into those internal thoughts - it does take practice and requires you to do it continuously to work better, how do you feel about giving it a go today?

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@rav3n I don’t fall in the region, sadly.

Im finding it hard to sit with the discomfort for long periods of time. Short periods of time are easier to manage. It’s just hard if the discomfort is present the whole day. I don’t think I’m at the point of sitting with discomfort the whole day.

I haven’t tried the narrating method, might give it a go. I’ve been stuck in my head a lot today. I’m feeling a bit better, but that’s because I’ve engaged in addictive behaviour. I’ve also self harmed today. I’ve made enough mistakes already, need to try to not make more mistakes. I’m physically okay

I think I've crashed, and now I am dissociating, probably my fault

Re: Functioning with ADHD

Would it be helpful to try and ground yourself @creative_writer ?

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@tyme sometimes I repeat the same mistakes even though I know there are consequences. Might try the five sense grounding.

I probably should've been more open during my GP appointment this morning, but there are some things I am ashamed to admit, maybe I don't him well yet. I have been seeing a different GP, wanted to find one that listened
