Something’s not right

A hard day

A hard day

Just found out a friend's son was tragically taken from us yesterday. I won't put details here but it seems like it was a hit and run. I lost another friend a few years ago in similar circumstances.

Absolutely heartbroken 💔

Re: A hard day

@Zoe7 house prices have gone up a lot. I don’t know how I’m going to get a home.

The health system is very broken, the people who need help can’t get it due to the prices. Even psych and pdoc appointments are so expensive. There is a lot of money spent on crisis as opposed to prevention. Many end up really unwell in hospital. Medication has become a big business

Agree totally @creative_writer Let's hope the government's bulk billing policy extends to psychosocial support and there are many more urgent care clinics. There are not enough mental health beds anywhere and not enough awareness or care from hospitals/ED. That is not always their fault - hospitals are extremely over stretched and often mental health patients land on the bottom of the list.

Re: A hard day

@Zoe7 I do hope bull billing extends to psychosocial support in community. If people were able to afford therapy, it may prevent them from going into a crisis. Money would be saved over the long term. I feel like there is still stigma around mental health. Mental health clients are often discharged so quickly, only to return two days later. There is this perception among certain professionals that those with mental health are attention seeking and just playing mind games. It is insulting and far from the truth. The health system needs to work on reducing stigma and seeing the person as a whole. I absolutely hate being treated as fragile. I’ve been treated as fragile before and absolutely could t stand it. It is kind of one of the reasons I left my old psych

The thing is @creative_writer if people are seen as attention seeking then what is the underlying cause of that. Often it is seeking attention to cover up deep underlying issues ...and they need to be investigated.

Re: A hard day

@Zoe7 I feel like we need a different approach towards mental health. Something more holistic and strength based. Maybe empowering people more will help them achieve and work on themselves. Many of these individuals don't believe in themselves or have much self-worth, empowerment can go a long way. In the current system, their needs are not currently being met and sometimes progress stagnants and health professionals don't know what to do. These clients may end up staying in therapy for so long because they are not getting the right support. I think it is important for a health professional to recognise their limits and refer them to someone else. It shouldn't be up to the client to figure things out themselves. I say this after completing social work placements and my own experience with the mental health system

Re: A hard day

I do agree @creative_writer but I also see a lot of people who do not help themselves. Maybe, as you said, their supports are not right for them but there are also people that want their supports to 'fix' everything. That mindset needs to be turned around and just like you, I believe empowering the individual is key.

@Zoe7 I’m not saying it’s like this for everyone. Sometimes people are stuck because they feel like there is no way out. If they are stigmatised and treated like they are fragile like glass, they may not move very far into their recovery. How the therapist sees the client matters, because they may indirectly send messages. Everyone has their own opinions and biases, but who are to impose those on someone else? It’s just another way to see the situation. How it looks on the surface may be different to what is going on internally

Re: A hard day

I agree @creative_writer Therapy can either be productive or stagnating too. There is however a fine line between pushing people to step outside their comfort zones and increasing anxiety etc. It is those though that take no actions for themselves they will never move towards recovery ie. given things to work on in therapy and never do them. I do know for some it feels (and sometimes is) impossible and those are often the ones that do not voice how bad or difficult things are truthfully so in those instances no therapy will actually work.

Re: A hard day

@Zoe7 I think it really depends. Therapy may not work for a number of things. Sometimes people are not ready. Sometimes people are in a toxic environment. Sometimes people are with the wrong therapist. But I just think it’s wrong for a therapist to impose opinions on a client. Sorry, I feel like I’ve been ranting tonight. It’s not directed at you

Re: A hard day

No need at all to be sorry Hon - it is a great discussion to have @creative_writer I do agree with you on the many reasons therapy doesn't work. Your last point "it’s wrong for a therapist to impose opinions on a client" is also a big point for me too ...it also goes towards some of my points ie. one needs to want to change/recover in order for any therapy to be successful but no-one can achieve that for the person. I have seen some say :what is the point of therapy if they do not give me the answers" - and that therein lies the problem ...some think therapists are there to there to provide the answers whereas they are only facilitators in the client finding that pathway for themselves. They can, of course, make suggestions and guide the client but they can't change the world for the client.
