When did you start feeling in control with your life?

When did you start feeling in control with your life?

I saw that an online friend of mine posted a thread with the same question on a completely different forum so I thought I can ask the same on here as well, just because I thought it was a really interesting question, and I’m curious to read and know some answers from you guys.

Well me personally, that’s something I still struggle with to this day. Even though I’ve learnt that we can’t control other people with the way they act/think/say even when you don’t like a certain thing that they do that annoys you which you unfortunately can’t control, but you can control the way you see, react, and think of it. This is something I still struggle to accept. I’m someone who finds it a lot easier to change myself when that person that I’m upset with changes themselves first. It’s not like I can change before that person starts to change, and this goes for my parents, my sister, everyone else in our extended family basically, and whoever else I know of…. like whenever my mum says things to me that I don’t even agree with and even TRIES to get me to follow on what she says (unfortunately a lot of times I DO end up following on what she tells me otherwise because of her trying to pressure me and telling me all of these ‘risks’ and things) but everytime I think about it (but also in the moment she tells me) I get angry as a result and become full-on in defense mode by yelling at her when I don’t accept and agree on what she tells me. I really want my whole life to be 100% free from EVERYTHING that she tells and tries to control me to do otherwise. I know that I’m not obliged to follow on whatever she tells me or wants me to do otherwise everytime if I was to tell her something, including a decision I’ve made that she’s “worried” or concerned for me about.
Like why do you care about what I do on the day that I’ll be busy on - after I tell you that I’m busy on that day, yet I feel obliged to even tell you it after you want to know about it? And why do you want me to send you images of what my new room looks like for proof that I’ve moved into a “nice” room, even to the extend to even COME to my accomodation and then forcing me to come and show you my new room!!!????

Or why do you want me to take pictures of my workplace and send those to you for proof that I’m actually working at that specific job that I told you?

also why do you care so much about wanting me to be in a relationship in my 20s, when we can LITERALLY wait to be in a relationship whenever that time is SUITABLE for us!!!!!!!!

To all the users that are reading this, now I’d like to know from you guys as to when you guys began to feel in control with your lives? 🙂

Re: When did you start feeling in control with your life?

Hi @Alisse what a beautiful and an eye-opening response. thank you so much for sharing this as well as sharing your perspectives as a mother yourself. i'm sorry to know that it has took you that long to stop feeling accountable to your mother. i wish i can have the same strength as you do right now. ❤️

The thing is based from how my own mother keeps on sending me text messages on a weekly basis and is more than willing enough to provide me the food she cooks and also asking me if i'd like to or if i can come to shopping with her, i get the impression that she wants her and i to still connect with each other so bad despite how much i often talk to her in a rude way and usually don't feel happy to see her, she does notice them and thinks that i'm just overall a rude person, but she fails to acknowledge/accept the fact that those are usually the signs on how uncomfortable i am with her and how much i dont even want to be with her, even though i have been telling her out loud even via text messages about how much i dont even want to be with her nor go anywehere with her, but yet she'll always comes up with things to brag -- such as her always providing and preparing stuff for me, blah blah blah. but yet she still wants/asks me to come shopping with her and all, as well as sending me text messages weekly, not just regarding the food that she wants me to come and pick up with, but other stuff too that she wants to know so bad about that i tell her whenever she asks me something...

oh how i wish i can move interstate if only it wasn't for her having to prepare/cook and provide food for me, and if only i was skilled enough to be able to meal prep in general (especially regarding cooking the same foods/meals that she cooks but thats highly unlikely that that'll happen anyway) and budget.. and if it also wasn't for her having to be worried or concerned about me regarding these choices (such as moving out of home, moving interstate, flying to another country by myself) that i make and/or wanting to make for myself. i live on my own now (moved out of home) & have already flew to another country by myself for a vacation, which thank god!! ❤️

Re: When did you start feeling in control with your life?

I really appreciate this perspective.

I was in the forums a while back and thought I was doing better aka “in control”. Part of my own trauma is the same as OPs- I have familial stuff around control. I feel controlled and out of control and hated for it.

Even writing this I’m worried I seem out of control.

But this gets to what I like about your comment. I’ve recently felt like a relapse in all areas of my life. I feel i need to control but I am also aware I can control much and maybe bit anything. So I am over compensating. Talking too much. Trying to seek answers. Maybe even coming here is part of it I don’t know.

Then I feel I should delete everything. I’m a mess etc. I’m out of control!

Even this- I’m over explaining and worried it’s some sort of mania. Digressions upon digressions. All I want to do is apologise for existing.

What I wanted to say in response to your post. Is that is what I am looking for deep down- people and places and spaces where I just can exist. And it doesn’t matter that I’m needy and sad and hard work. Someone can still tell me I’m ok. But Without judgment. Sorry all this is a lot.

OP I really resonate. I’m in my 40’s. When I feel like I’m getting it right that’s when I feel in control. But I still need to work on things. I don’t think it’s linear and I think most people lie about being in control. Or exactly- exert control over others.

I have a very similar relationship with mum. I love her and she loves me. But she never stops telling me how to be and who. And I never feel I measure up.

When I gave control is when I can engage less or try to see it as it’s love even though it doesn’t work for me.

I can’t help with the exact answer. But I think this one is really good. We can’t vi too many things but we can get balance. Coming here and being heard and understanding. Well, that’s trust. And I think that’s what some control feels like. I like you want balance and peace and a little joy.

It’s hard. I see you. I hear you and I want the best for you. The final thing I would say and I’m not good at this - but self compassion and allow yourself to be ok with seeking peace. It doesn’t always come how we expect so that’s hard too. But I promise we’re allowed it. We’re ok.
I’m not sure if I’m allowed to but I’d like to send a calming hug. And the last thing. You did something good here. You asked for advice from people that understand. Like this comment, that’s trust and I think it’s a bit of control. I hope your day is a nice one. Be kind to you. You deserve it.

And sorry for the tangent. Thanks for letting me come here. This comment helped and so did others. Go well all. I will read more later. Thank you

Hey @Blackcloud @Alisse , feel free to read the post above from @Kiki5 .

@Kiki5 , sounds like a lot is going on for you and there are a lot of expectations placed on you. Please know we are here to ride out the waves with you. I can see you have been reflecting a lot on things, and yes, sometimes we just don't have all the answers.

Hold tight, my friend.

Re: When did you start feeling in control with your life?

Haha @tyme ... There are many times I don't have ALL the answers. Lol... Please forgive cheeky apple!

I am such a blooming nerd I felt the urge to do a complex set of Venn diagrams showing the few times I do have a LOT of answers and then mention Set Theory. Lol

@Alisse Welcome

@Kiki5

@Blackcloud

@chibam Hearing you about belonging to multiple social fields. I deliberately decided to do that about 20 years ago. I dipped into community vs professional... sacred vs secular... and various combos... oops back to Venn diagrams again. It has really helped stabilise me.

@Blackcloud

I am wondering if "relative stability" could be a helpful concept when dealing various feelings of being in or out of control?

I get we have transitional periods in life when things are more chaotic... I have been sharing watery metaphors since the beginning of being on this forum... Recently I met in a minister who mentioned "fluid dynamics"... Right on man! Yeah I got he was referring to people situations not the laws of physics.

Metaphors are symbolic and approximate. I am grateful I was exposed to science and the arts by both my parents when I was young.

I agree @Appleblossom - my brain is a bit mushed up. So no, I don't have the answers to MANY things! (Especially today)

Re: When did you start feeling in control with your life?

Dear @tyme

I studied too much and my hard drive is over ful. These days I am not sure what comes out of my mouth. I am revisiting the concept of Freudian slips but Mr Freud had more than a few slips of his own. Though the unconscious was an interesting idea, and I studied him and French followers a lot. On reflection 30 years later his writing was a tad arrogant. I wish there was more Jung in the academy but politics is politics. My slips are probably related by phonics or semantics more than my unconscious, but I never know for sure...lol

My Blooming ... Self control... Varies day to day @Blackcloud

Hope you are all coping.

@Alisse @Kiki5 @chibam

Hahaha.. my hard drive is on its way out... too much mush lol @Appleblossom It can't cope.

Love ya @Appleblossom

@Blackcloud, I don't want to detract from the point of this thread though. What's happening for you?

Re: When did you start feeling in control with your life?

Hi @Kiki5 thank you so much for sharing, and I really appreciate on taking the time to read your perspective on this topic. I'm really grateful that you've joined the forums even though I don't know when you've first joined, and it's people like you who make me feel that I'm not alone in my experiences and struggles, as well as others here like @Appleblossom @Alisse and others.. I'm totally with you on the self-compassion and allow ourselves to be okay with seeking peace, since this is what I've been wanting for myself every single day without having my mum to interfere with my 'peace' by her continuing to communicate with me even via SMS no matter how much I don't wanna associate with her xD

and thank you so much, i hope you're kind to yourself too and you deserve the world. ❤️ and sending you calming hugs back too xx

you're an amazing person, i hope you know that ❤️

@Appleblossom hmmm I'll have to look into the relative stability concept as I don't know anything about it lol
