Coping with life's difficulties

@Till23

My way of handling things has usually been to just go into zombie mode. I completely withdraw and just lose motivation to do anything. I did that for a week or say at the start of last year after finding out I had become resistant to the first hormone therapy. I was told i would be on it for 3 years, go off it... monitor the PSA... if it started going up too much, go back on it for a while and repeat. It seemed like a good deal to me at the time if that was all i had to deal with. I only made it to the 2nd PSA test in late December 2023 to get the bad news, so i never got close to the 3 years. Zombie mode hit and it took my months to really start to get my head together again. I think it was May that I found here and joined.

I have heard that a lot of CSA survivors do turn to drugs and alcohol and the damage that it does to their lives. So i think its a lot of credit to you that you didn't go down such a destructive route. But even so it's hard to imagine who difficult it must have been for you, even to just to trust anyone.

I have come up with so many reasons why people can just sort of disappear when someone they know gets cancer. You listed some of the man ones but i came up with quite a few. In the end I decided I didn't care what their reasons were. If they weren't going to be there for me, I didn't want them around. I wasn't going to pretend and people please anymore, thinking I had to people what people wanted, always be the happy, funny person so they would want me around which I had done for most of my life. Realising that had got me nowhere but a handful of people who disappeared as soon as i really needed them after never asking anything from them, i just decided "no more". I think that was probably the main thought that made me look for somewhere to reach out and brought me here. I had decided that if i didn't want these unsupportive people around, then maybe I could find people who would support me. I was also a couple of months into the planning for the cancer support group i was working on which had really got me motivated to get back into life again.

I was lucky I guess when I had my 8 weeks of radiation. I didn't have work and my partner was working from home a lot so she would just drop me off, i'd whizz in to get done and she would come pick me up. The were upgrading one of the 2 machines they had for the first 6 weeks i was there so they were done to one machine. To make up for it they ran until 9pm, so getting sessions later in the day was fairly easy.

It was a bit annoying because when i went it for the planning session and the baseline image they take, they suddenly ask me once i was laying there was it okay if the give me three little tattooed dots so they could align me in the same position for all the sessions. What was I going to say? So i have tattoos now even though i've looked but i cant find them anymore. So it's not very impressive if someone asks to see my tats. ‌‌ The annoying bit is the new machine didn't need the tattoos! But in hindsight, I'm kind of glad i did so I can say i have 3 tattoos but i'm not showing you.

In the past year I have joined cancer support groups, adoptee support groups and MH support groups. And one thing I've heard time and time again from new people joining is the first think I thought... that I thought these feelings were just me and/or it so great to talk to people who understand what it's like. It really is nice to be able to talk to someone and not spend most of the conversation trying to explain what it like. Especially when some of it you don't even know how to really explain. Rather just talk to someone and you both know the other person just gets it.

That's the excuse they generally use. That they're just concerned about me and that it might be too much. The past one i tried, the one that was with the chemo patients, I go to go there and have a tour and a chat. I was very upfront about where I was in my treatments and that it was always going to be ongoing. That I had done all of these support things, including starting the support group and this is what helped me the most and drove me. She seemed very impressed and said she needed to speak to head office and organize the paperwork and i would be able to start in about 3 weeks. I got an email a week later saying she had talked to head office and they decided to put a pause on my application and that i was welcome to come back in 6 months when my treatment was finished. Like I said, I was very clear about where I was treatment was, and they are a cancer treatment centre so they know my situation. It just felt like a don't call us, we'll call you. And it was just an email. That was the last one i tried as I just could keep doing it.

I have found some volunteer opportunities since then. A member of a steering committee at the local hospital for a nationwide register/database of prostate cancer patients and their outcomes over time. Various studies, workshops, and research projects. All of them are due to me being a "consumer" but they all do seem to value my input from a patients point of view on a multitude of areas, so any little thing i can do and find another little positive or two from my situation.

It must be so rewarding volunteering and helping out homeless people and others really struggling financially. It's so great that they have you there to treat them with some dignity and talk to them and understand them. I'm sure it means the world to them to be treated like a person and not feel like they're there being looked down upon or being judged. As someone who had spent most of their lives finding it near impossible to ask for help, I can't imagine how hard it must be to have to ask for something so simple like food. The main solution with homeless people seems to be just get them out of sight in a lot of places. So anything, or anyone that makes them feel like the have some dignity and respect is so important. If my parents both died when i was in my 20s for example. The house would have needed to be sold and the proceeds divided between us. No because then i found it so hard to find a job because of my own issues as soon as they money run out from paying rent and all the other expenses of living somewhere by myself, I could so easily of become homeless myself. It only takes a couple of things to go wrong at the wrong time for anyone. But unfortunately it does seem to be so much harder for people dealing with traumas and just trying to do their best to cope and get through life. Some of us can hide it better than others and some people have more to deal with but it can be so hard and it's nice to get a little understanding and compassion. It goes such a long way when you can find it. Those childhood traumas stick with you! It becomes the way your brain is wired and it's so hard to change. I honestly don't think you ever do get rid of it, you can just learn to find ways to work around it and get some wins against it. But it takes a lot of time, luck and help.

A lot of people are surprise at my social issues, especially here i think because it's all online. I have time to think about responses, edit them, reword them, change them. It takes me a while. In person I don't have that luxury and i think i freeze. While I do admit i've become better at it, all that anxiety, self-doubt, and low self-esteem issues are still there. I think I've always been good at faking it, but in person it's very had to hide and i think it's much more obvious that i'm not that comfortable around people. Although i think a lot of people may see it as other things. Like maybe I don't care, or i'm disinterested, of maybe even arrogance because I keep to myself. If someone starts a conversation with me now, i think i'm a lot better and more comfortable doing that now. But stick me in a room with someone else and I will sit there in awkward silence longer than anyone else. I will never start the conversation. These days it's not even really because I don't know what to say or think i will embarrass myself like i would have in the past. I think now it's just more of those doubts still say "Don't talk to them, they don't want to talk to you. If they did they would have said something by now." I know it's wrong in most cases and most times the person would be very polite and have a conversation, but those doubts are strong and still have a lot of power of the more rational side of my brain.

@Till23 It must be so difficult right now, but he's with the person he loves and you've given him a good life. Ultimately, that's is what matters.

Re: Coping with life's difficulties

Hey @MJG017 how are you going?

I feel as though I am over the acute stages of loss of my dog. I don't "hear" him as much and I hardly ever "see" him now, so I have come to some kind of acceptance. I still think about him of course.

I think about you a bit too and especially when they announced Biden had prostate cancer.

I will be away for a few weeks as I'm going overseas with my sport, a mixed team from around Australia. I will be leaving the week after next. I'm just letting you know, in case you are wondering why you haven't seen me around, or I haven't responded to a tag. I will be back very late June.

Tomorrow I am having my follow-up mammogram and ultrasound, but I won't know the results until I get back from trip. It's kind of good because I can just have the trip without having to think about anything, if the results are bad. If they are good, it would be nice to know before I go I suppose. I am expecting results to be good, so I've decided to just not think about it!

I'm not really sure how i'm doing. I feel like i want to fight, but that i'm doing it alone. I'm trying to just accept that there's no choice but to wait until i'm stage 4 before anything more can be done and just hope that something comes alone. It's a hard thing to accept and I feel like its very close to the end by then, especially after being told chemo isn't likely to be much more effective than the hormone therapies were. I'm just trying to keep going on as normal. There are good days and bad days of course. I had a PET scan yesterday ready for my next MO appointment on the 5th June. Not that i'm expecting it to show anything yet. I think he's just getting me to do it to keep me happy. I have no idea. The inevitability of everything just feels so heavy hanging over me at the moment. The prostate nurse who helps us with the group works at GenesisCare and suggested i get a referral to go and speak to the radonc who treated me before. Apparently he's very 'nerdy' about it all and is right up with all the current trials and things so that's my next plan. She suggested waiting until i get the PET scan and then ask the MO to refer me back to this radonc for a little extra info. So i'll do that. If he says no or feels it isn't warranted, i'll ask my GP.

You don't ever forget about your pets obviously, but at least you've started to get that acceptance, which i know is painful still, but will make things easier. I know you're expecting good results from these tests, but i'll say good luck anyway.

I hope you have a great trip. It sounds like a lot of fun... going overseas to play sport. A bit jealous. 😁

Hey @MJG017 ,

I'm sorry to hear how hard it is. It sounds like uncertainty is so real for you at the moment, and no matter what you do, you feel you are walking this alone.

Is there something you feel the community here can do to make it easier for you?

You've always been there to support others so it's important that we do our best to support you too.

Thanks@tyme

Honestly, if I knew what anyone could do, I would ask in a second. I just don't know what options are left at the moment, but to wait for things to progress and then hope there's time for any options then. I just don't really now what to do, think, or feel at the moment. So I just try to distract myself as much as possible and keep myself occupied. I really have no idea what else I can do... but wait and try not to think about what's coming.

Re: Coping with life's difficulties

Hi @tyme - @MJG017 may have ideas about how people on the forums could support him more, especially since I will be away for approximately three weeks shortly.

I have been chatting with @MJG017 since I found out he had cancer which came about when we were supporting another member and I declared my cancer diagnoses and then so did MJG017 and we started this thread.

It is difficult for people who have not had cancer to really understand what it's like and we don't need to explain everything to each other because we know about the tests and treatments.

My father also passed away from the same cancer less than a year ago, and I cared for him at home until the very end.

Of course, other people on the forums may have had cancer, I already know there are other people and had very brief chats about it. Some people having had cancer just want to move on and people who have had family members with it may not want to revisit it either. It's a difficult topic for many.

@MJG017 it's up to you of course.

Re: Coping with life's difficulties

Oops pressed the post button too early on that last post @MJG017 but anyhow, how are you going today? I have had an interesting day, but not necessarily in a particularly good interesting way.

I went off to have my imaging this morning. I told them about my PET scan findings and they did take a while going over that area with ultrasound probe. The ultrasonographer told me that she couldn't see anything in that area, but have to wait for radiologist. However, she spent ages and took lots of still images of the other side, I think even more than when I had caner on that side and at the end she didn't say anything about that side. So I thought could be nothing, or she's not saying anything because technically they can't, have to wait for comparison with last images by radiologist.

Then I'm at a presentation my sport club were giving at another organisation. I can hear my phone ringing in the pocket of my jacket. Then the ding of a message being received. So I'm thinking I hope that's not the imaging place trying to recall me.

I had to wait another 30mins until I could check the message on phone.

Turns out it was the vet. They were ringing me to say my dogs ashes were ready to pick up.

I felt a bit sad putting his ashes in the car. But he is beside my other dog now on a shelf, so they are together again.

So, I just have to resolve to not think about the imaging while I'm away.

Re: Coping with life's difficulties

Hi @Till23

It's hard to answer how i'm doing. I'm just not sure. I just keep doing the things i have to do, like the group stuff and study, and let it all distract me. So i seem to be able to do these things, and feel okay, not thinking of much beyond what i'm currently doing. But the quieter moments when i don't have much to distract me it can all so easily get on top of me. So its a bit all or nothing at the moment. Either i function as normal while busy or it all just gets me down so quickly when im not doing anything. There's that thing people say "Don't worry, it's not the end of the world!" but in these quiet moments I feel like, from my own perspective, that's exactly what it is! I'm really struggling to see any other way to look at it. It makes it so hard to find motivation to do anything. Most things feel pointless a lot of the time. Which worries me.

The complete lack of support, or even interest in asking how i'm doing, from family just makes it harder. I have two people I can talk to when i'm feeling down. But at the same time, being only two people it feels unfair to dump everything on them and I find myself holding things back... to protect them I guess. Don't get me wrong though, I do fully appreciate having them both in my life and knowing that I can talk to them, and most important... I know they do worry about me and want to help and support me. And they can get me out of those really low times when I need them. Just by chatting to me and being there.

It certainly sounds frustrating not knowing why the ultrasonographer looks at those images for so long. I know they really can't really say much. But they must be aware that we definitely notice things like this and our minds will run with it. Surely they could say something. Even if it looks like something that needs further investigation, just tell me! I get so frustrated when they just say nothing and leave me wondering. I really do wonder at times like this if they have any understanding of how much stress and anxiety it can cause.

I had a similar thing after I had a test done. I was told they would call if there was something to be concerned about. I was so anxious hoping the phone wouldn't ring. It did! But it was just one of those scammy telemarketers asking me if I had solar panels! I've never been so happy to hear from one of these people! 😀

Picking up the ashes must have been hard. When our cat died a few years ago, the vet said for a few extra dollars they would take the ashes and spread them in some nice place they had for this. We did this, because neither of us could face picking them up ourselves. I still see her lying there on the floor where we find there and having to pick her up and take her to the vet. It's been 4 years and it's still painful to remember. But I do wish we had something of her here now though. I think it would be a nice way to remember her.
