What is your idea of your identity?

What is your idea of your identity?

Hi guys,

I am thinking about my identity and I am struggling to come up with things that don’t revolve around my roles eg. wife, mother, sister, aunt, church member.

I would say that I am creative and brutally honest.

I am hoping that you can suggest the kinds of things that you see as your identity besides your work and other roles. This will give me a spring board to give more more ideas about my own identity.

I would say that I have always struggled with my identity, when I was 19 I remember telling someone that I had no idea who I was. This person had a strong sense of identity and was very expressive in their appearance.

Thanks for any help here. Please tag others you think this may interest

Lol @Bill16

you could be right!

Thanks @MJG017

we are who we are and not what others think we are. I think it’s lovely that you like to help people

@Oaktree Do you think it is as simple as we are what we love to do in life?

No I think it’s who you are at your core, not what you like to do. There is a difference. The more I think about this the more vague I think the question is. Identity is deep!

@Oaktree I have said before that my family is multicultural. My closest friends in the outside world are First Nations people from a variety of countries.

A family of science nerds, I was explaining to my grandson about human evolution DNA 🧬

Said I have homosapien and neanderthal. But he has “Denisovan neanderthal and homosapien mixed up in there real good 😊 “

@Oaktree Yes, not really what you like, but what you choose to do with you life. But your are right, it is a very deep question. It just gets more and more faceted as you dig into it. The next 'Identity' group may be a long one! 😁

@MJG017

I went to an identity group yesterday afternoon and that’s what led to this thread. I wanted to consider it more but the more I ask others what they think the more confused I am

Re: What is your idea of your identity?

@Oaktree Yep. I think i worked my brain into a loop with my reply last night trying to come up with a nice clean answer. Apart from a headache, i'm not sure I got anywhere other than realising it is like "what is the sound of one hand clapping" or "If a tree falls in the forest and the squirrels are too busy to notice, does the tree feel rejected?"

Re: What is your idea of your identity?

"Does the tree feel rejected" LMAO @MJG017 you crack me up!!

@Oaktree oh my word I LOVE this topic but.... I feel like to give you a proper answer, like a REAL JYNX answer not just a spur of the moment thought, I might end up having to write a whole dang essay!! Because I have contemplated this A LOT during my recovery (and have also had several adventures and misadventures in entheogenic plant medicine in my youth) and my answer might be a little...odd. But you know me, never one to shy away from my own weirdness!!

But in the most succinct way possible - I am actually just a big ol' stack of cells whose primary purpose is to survive long enough to reproduce. Intelligence is merely an unfortunate byproduct of evolution; we're simply ghosts haunting a skeleton in a temporary meat suit. My 'identity' is but a series of stories I have told myself about my life. I am simultaneously the author and audience to myself. If I am just a story, just an experience, then all I can do is try to be a story worth telling.

Kinda why this is my fav Doctor Who quote:

I think like... to me, my identity isn't about what I can do, but about how I make people feel.

@Jynx

I love your reply thanks. My closest answer is that I am a heavenly intelligence. A spiritual being having an earthly experience.

Your answer about it being about making others feel good is similar to what @MJG017 said too. I think if I can help people along the way then that makes me happy and feel worthwhile too
