Coin Collectors' Corner

Coin Collectors' Corner

Hey Everyone!

I thought I'd open this space up to talk all things coins!

I've noticed that we have a few interested coin collectors.

@Mustang67 @Harmonium @Shaz51 @Snowie Feel free to tag anyone.

I'm a bit gutted that I missed out on the Bluey coin collection. I was waiting eagerly for it 😞

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Which coins would you buy currently @tyme ? 😊

Their store currently lists the Big Things and the WW Birthday Cakes ones.

Both look pretty nice. But I'd have to choose the birthday cake ones. I grew up with that book and my mum making my birthday cake from it from when I was born for many many years! She learnt a lot of skills from it i think, and then she would make whatever shapes she thought we'd like even if she didnt have instructions for them. I had some amazing cakes growing up.

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

When I go to the mint, I stamp the coins and they are the ones I buy. I don't really intentionally go out and buy any @AlwaysMyself

I like coins, but I don't go out of my way to get them

What about you?

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Hi @AlwaysMyself! Thanks re lost coin, so funny my room got a very good clean out at the same time thinking it was here 😂😂. Aw yeah I am not so sure how the pics turn out as to send them I have to screen shot them for them to be accepted (not sure why) oohh and it would be so good if mum didn’t pack them back away 🤪 I would have loved to ask about the butterfly one too, the non circular one with the varying edges you mentioned and the iguana one I liked!

Maybe I’ll ask google hehe. I’ll let you know if I find out anything or perhaps I’ll ask mum to see if she’d be interested at looking at those coins again 😊

Haha @tyme, I am interested in what coins you have!!! Don’t worry mind would be in a bag too but lucky for me the boxes came like that so once you’d find that coin you would just place it in there! Very handy otherwise I’d be the same cos naturally where else would store them. Lol. I wonder what coin storage stuff there is these days!

I'm sure @Mustang67 must know if there is any easy storage for them if you wanted to lay them out 😀

I loved the mint only been once or twice but I had so much fun!! I think that’s where I got the shark coin and netball coin or perhaps I got the shark coin as a present from someone and the netball one could have been a present too, (not sure the shark one would have been my first choice of animal haha) It’s cool though !!

Now I have relooked at my coins I’m keen for more now 🤣🤭. Probably have to see if there is a frog one at the mint online maybe lol. 🐸

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

The only coins I have is somewhere I think i have a coin from 2001 centenary I think. I think we got them at school?

Otherwise they are foreign currency left over from when I have travelled.

If you're interested in different country coins I can get them out take a photo. I store them jn zip lock bags by either country or region lol.

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Hi @Chasingsunsets I like your enthusiasm : ) I wanted to let you know Australia Post have cabinets with great coin folders that are acid free and optimal for storing a bunch of different coins longterm. Also if you pick up the folders or inserts for the folders from Australia Post there’s zero postage.
I have also used coin capsules which I purchased off EBay and I’ve been happy with them. You can pick them up and handle them while they’re in a capsule so that’s what I love about the capsules. I’ve used them a couple of years without any toning issues. But if you have special coins, make sure you get some white fabric gloves for transferring any coins carefully into the capsule - I give them a good wipe over with the white gloves too…if they are circulated. Don’t wipe if uncirculated. And never, clean any circulated coin to make it sparkle… Collectors like to see how age develops on a coin as it speaks of its history and origin.
Happy coin hjnting

what coins do you like collecting?

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Hi @Chasingsunsets @Mustang67 and all reading. What coins do I like collecting? Well my favs are any coin I receive : ) Obsessed, is probably the best way to describe it. I have enjoy learning g about history and trying to recall those special years of coins in my change. The special years are the sneaky ones that could be worth a mint but less obvious than the usual ones people can remember like 2000 10c mule for example. So for example, throughout the years of fancy commemorative coins a few with the standard coat of arms 50c or Mob of Roos $1 are quite rare and these are worth keeping an eye out for because they look like a normal coin but can be worth a pretty penny.
Recently I’ve grown disheartened by Aus Post RAM releases due to feeling like it’s gamed…and that there are too few positive returns. I guess I’m looking for coins that will appreciate and not just coins I appreciate - of which there are many. Occasionally, I’ll bid with Australia Post release items if it really speaks to me and I would love a few silvers, but I seldom have the money spare once an opportunity arises for silvers. Silvers under $90 appeal to me currently because I think they will appreciate.
Mustang has an admirable collection and I would second anything that catches her eye. She has a great sense for finding them too.
Aesthetically, I love the Great Barrier Reef coins and Mustang’s Flowers coins : )

And while I wish I had a few gold sovereigns, I am happy enough with a few Bluey’s that I treasure and a few of the smallest coins in the world from Macquarie Mint.

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Do you have a pic of a 'coin capsule'? I'm trying to imagine them @Harmonium

Also, great to see you. I feel like I haven't seen you in ages!

Hello fellow coin collectors @Chasingsunsets @AlwaysMyself @Cuddlebear @Mustang67

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Hello @tyme yes I’ve been focused on my to-do list. Trying to spend less time in the digital space and more time living. I’ve started a closed loop garden which was partly spurred on by the gorgeous flowers coins shared by @Mustang67 : ) I approached it with a focus on health and wellbeing and I love how I can lose an hour or two fussing over seedlings and the rewards of watching something grow. I’ve focused on soil rejuvenation and planted seeds from the local area or the food I eat. It’s coming along nicely and I’m enjoying the sunshine and getting my hands dirty.

But I digress Tyme, the coin capsules are cool little disc shaped, clear containers for coins. A photo will attach if I am lucky and you’ll be able to see what I mean… Some have an edging material that even wraps the coin like a frame to keep in snug in the capsule and they are relatively inexpensive. I bought 50 for around $12 on EBay, delivery and all. These are great for newish circulated coins that you don’t want to put your fingerprints/mittens on but you still want to look at (although any new uncirculated coins are generally best to keep in original packaging). This is what coin capsules look like : )
