Ups and Downs of Husband`s Mental Illness

Hello @PeppiPatty, over here my special friend xx

Hello Everyone

Love to hear from others on the forum if you experience this

My hubby has been diagnosed with lots of things and has had MI all his life

do you find things goes ok and i start to feel confident and wanting to go forward and then everytime something always happens to upset it -- sometimes I think is it a controlling thing ?? that he wants to be in control ??

Don`t know if I am making this up , but i have that feeling ,

Re: Ups and Downs of Husband`s Mental Illnesses

hello @Former-Member

I have experienced indifferent medical practitioners, psychiatrists, psychologists...

some do not like their prognosis or diagnosis questioned...they feel challenged...which to me only states that they are insecure and probably could do with seeing a specialist themselves..

I stand up for myself all of the time now much to the chagrin of my husband at times... he thinks that I just take it the wrong way..

well my opinion on that thought is...whatever the reason...I am not feeling comfortable or acknowledged..I have sought help from the person in question whom I have appeared to be over reactive towards...

Bottom line those people are in a profession of helping and need to address all questions...

I also understand your concern in changing a specialist half way through...perhaps detrimental to mr d to have to start with a new one...

what does he feel about the whole situation?.....how does he feel about how you were spoken to?...that might assist in the decision making..

this has been a very long journey for you....you both have come so far...

some time out for mrs darcy?

we are all hear to listen and support you as you have done such an incredible job in supporting others..

@Faith-and-Hope
I think the pdoc was way out of line doing that. You are not his patient and he has not done a formal examination on you, brief observations can be inherently wrong. If they have any concerns about the way they perceive you as dealing with things, dedicated open disclosure is the proper way to deal with this.

Re: Ups and Downs of Husband`s Mental Illness

The pdoc did not speak to me unkindly @Former-Member she knows I look things up and will speak up if not happy. Trouble is I need to mull things over before responding and do not want to sound rude ....

Mr D has no idea of anything medical and relies in me greatly for this, he has not said to me that pdoc explained anything about the issue; he probably zoned out when I spoke to pdoc. Will ask GP for advice next time we go and depending on interval change of his monitoring results will decide what to do.

Anyhoo ... probably time for me to change the subject ... I do appreciate that it is a tough job for them and like you say she might feel bit insecure, particularly as the drugs they have to work with are somewhat ordinary in any event.

Good to hear you sounding calmer in between the lines so to speak..

I shall apologise and retreat with my tail between my legs..

Hi ladies and gent ..... @Former-Member @Former-Member @Determined .....

Thanks for that feedback @Former-Member .... that is probably my biggest sense of dismay .... I had expected what you described above, not what I was on the receiving end of ..... but tomorrow’s appointment (3rd time I have seen him in 9 months is a closure with this team apparently, so I am creating closure with this person in my mind, and hoping for someone I can relate to on the other seaboard.

It was nice to hear you echo what my expectation would have been, and I am hearing others say that they have a pdoc they find relatable and empathetic ..... I need to hear that too.

Re: Ups and Downs of Husband`s Mental Illness

The most confusing discussion I have had with a pdoc was when changing my darlings meds (as an inpatient private mh ward), I asked how that would go with breast feeding, his response 'I dont know, what does your dr think'

Ummm ?? Don't know that's why I just asked you.... he is writing the script knowing she was breast feeding and not considering if it was appropriate. Turns out it wasn't and we had to wean him overnight. (One of the mh nurses looked it up and contacted maternity ward at the same hospital to discuss). I was not happy...

I thought about the response after some time to simmer down and then remembered the stupid ob doc changed her meds when she was in the maternity ward, (public hospital). That also annoyed me because he refused to consult her pdoc and also refused to allow her to continue her usual meds while in his ward. Cant see how after 43 weeks of pregnancy breast feeding was going to be an issue and pdoc had already cleared it anyway. So change in med no taper down to adjust... and at a time of increased risk. Awesome decision.

Anyway on reflection I suspect that is what he was referring to. Probably didnt appreciate things changed against his wishes. Despite the fact I asked him when she was home what should we do change back or continue. At the time another change was not in her best interests.

Hi @Shaz51 🙂

How do you feel about what Mr Shaz is saying? I imagine it must be hard seeing him experience that guilt too?
