Ups and Downs of Husband`s Mental Illness

Hello @PeppiPatty, over here my special friend xx

Hello Everyone

Love to hear from others on the forum if you experience this

My hubby has been diagnosed with lots of things and has had MI all his life

do you find things goes ok and i start to feel confident and wanting to go forward and then everytime something always happens to upset it -- sometimes I think is it a controlling thing ?? that he wants to be in control ??

Don`t know if I am making this up , but i have that feeling ,

Oh no @Shaz51, how are you feeling about that? It can be very troubling when our loved ones talk like that.

I never know how to respond when my darling talks like that.

@Shaz51

It is very hard for us but especially for our loved ones when they cannot see that anything they do is of value and cannot see how we could love them...feeling we would be better off without them.

I hope your clients show you adequate appreciation Shazzle Dazzle, I know that having someone in to clean when Mr D was unwell was such a wonderful thing and made a huge difference to me. I can use the same vacuum and mop but my place never comes up as good as when a professional does the cleaning for me. Likewise, getting the mowing and some other gardening done was a huge relief.

Dear @Shaz51

you are trying to be there for everyone..

you also have had increased health issues of your own..

mr Shaz is perhaps noticing all of this and is putting all of the blame on himself..

mental illness can affect the way people perceive situations..

he clearly loves you so much and does not like to see you struggling or know that your health has been further affected..

I could be way off track..

I do know that open communication ongoing between couples in this situation can relieve some of the stress, heartache and guilt..

my husband and I have to keep the communication open as he does not get it...whatever it is..

hard work but paramount..

how is your anxiety?

Re: Ups and Downs of Husband`s Mental Illness

Hi and thanks for checking in. I’ve been away for a bit; took my mum on a little trip, which we both needed and enjoyed. Mr managed fine on his own and the meds are working quite well. Less restless and much less irritable. As usual it’s never one thing and past substance abuse problems have returned and gotten problematic. His mental health is holding up ok, but concerned about his overall health and that substances can exacerbate his illness.
This is a separate thing to his illness so has to be dealt with differently, but he initially started using to help and mask the symptoms when they began and then kept going back to it for short term relief. I think he’s at the point that he thinks the symptoms will return if he stops, but I think that is one of several justifications he has for what is ultimately an addiction.
And off we go again...
