Re: Ups and Downs of Husband`s Mental Illness

Thanks @soul .... 💕

It turns out that S2 has perfectionist traits .... I think all the kids do to some degree .... but I honestly believe the GAD and depression he is suffering from are the result of WH "hammering" him for the last couple of years about having to achieve .... trying to micro-manage him according to his own parent's style, and competing with mine ..... all under the influence of his own triggered mi. Eight years ago S2 was 14yo, and D3 was 11 ..... I don't think they can readily identify with memories of when WH wasn't like this. Because he had already had traits of it, I think they have just settled with this being him, along with the delusional thinking and rages, and constant seeking of excitement ....

They know his exercise and eating patterns are disordered, but are thinking that while he is settled, he is relatively okay ..... failing to understand that the only reason he is settled is because I am not challenging him over the influence his regimen and mindset is having over us. He doesn't eat family meals with us, for instance, unless our "marrieds" are here for lunch on a Sunday, and even then he is eating his own food, not the family meal. He is spending more time in his mother's company that he is with nay of us, but he is actually here more, just closed away in his office, or the gym, or going to sleep at 8pm before anyone else is ready to settle, and up at 4am .... challenging these and all the other minutiae of the mi would have him anything but settled, and the rages and delusional thinking would have taken over. While that would certainly have got him to diagnosis and treatment, I can't trust that we would be safe, or how badly that would destroy all our relationships, perhaps setting off mi in most or all of us.

That is what is hurting so much in regard to S2 .... without WH's mi impacting him, he may have needed some tools to managethe traits that were affecting him, but it is unlikely he would have dropped his whole bundle like this, and had his self-confidence so badly shredded, and because he is blaming himself, I don't think he is speaking up to the therapistenough about where WH was at - I say was because he is now in a panic about S2 and holding himself very calmly, trying not to rock the boat anymore after being diagnosed ocpd and called off being controlling with S2 by the pdoc. Both WH and S2 can start convincing themselves that he wasn't that bad .... S2 not wanting to acknowledge and blow the whistle on WH for what that might do to our fragile family .... and WH with a form of amnesia over himself .... ??!! .... he will re-write his own history to cope with this.

So ironic that the one who needs treatment the most is sitting to one side while the other goes through the therapy programs needed so much by the first ... 😔

They say "what doesn't kiill you makes you stronger" .... I am choosing to believe that. The examples of wonderful forumites who persevere and rise above their circumstances helps me to find courage and keep facing up to the next wave.

Yes @Faith-and-Hope - it does sound funny but it is the obvious opposite - really serious

I am sorry things have gone this far - I know some of the ins-and-outs of it but the situation is getting out of control - it really sounds as if it is getting way too much for you

This is so hard - like S2 and WH and in a crazy-circle and no one can interupt the flow of it all because of legalities involved

Maybe it has got to the time when you have to start pulling weight here - if WH is affecting S2 so much -

I am really so sorry things have got this bad

Re: Ups and Downs of Husband`s Mental Illness

There is a pdoc involved with S2 now @Owlunar, and he is pulling weight ..... slapped a diagnosis of ocpd on WH quick smart and told him to stop micro-managing S2, labelling it controlling. That stopped the out-of-control stuff for the moment, but this thing in WH is so insidious, it still doesn't show up easily because he can do and say all the right things to appear normal and mask the illness .... which leaves me looking like I am catastrophising when you don't know about the chew / spit behaviour, bud he is like a guard dog over that, and Ai have been told it is dangerous to try to stage an intervention, otherwise nothing would stop me from speaking up about it and laying everything out on the table.

I have been told that the specialists have to broach this with WH, not any of the rest of us, but how do they find out it's there in the first place when privacy laws prevent me from speaking to anyone around him, and in front of him is psychologically dangerous for all of us ?

Have to wait and see what presents itself.

Re: Ups and Downs of Husband`s Mental Illness

HI @Faith-and-Hope

It's interesting that you have been told not to stage an intervention with WH - and that it would be dangerous for you to do so

I get it that the psyches think they know better but you see the whole picture and now two of your kids are involved in WH's games and S2 is getting pretty upset about anything

Who does the chew and spit? WH or S2 or both?

It's a very strange situation and waiting to see what presents is harder than I thought anything could be - esp if you can't have your say privately with his doctors

I really wonder what Dr Phil would have to say about this - btw - I wonder a lot about Dr. Phil - he does have a lot of resources - but like - but...............do they work

Still up for plenty of faith for your prayers - keep it up - you have the patience of a saint really

Re: Ups and Downs of Husband`s Mental Illness

The chew-spit is WH @Owlunar .... not S2, but S2 fears that he will become ill like WH in his later life, because he perceives his personality as similar to his Dad's .... and that may be one way the pdoc can ease his mind, by acknowledging the similarities, but also explaining that his dad has a personality disorder that S2 doesn't have, and how therapy works to help people overcome whatever negatives they are faced with, and can re-write their story.

WH is likely to have a complete breakdown when it is made apparent to him that his "ideal lifestyle" is a disorder .... and when the anosognosia is lifted and he is faced with the consequences of his illness over his family. That is something that needs to be supported, and the therapist needs to be aware of its exopistence n order to support him. It will likely take medication and individual counselling, possibly in a hospital setting. That is why it is dangerous to attempt this conversation in family therapy .... and if we fail to get through it can trigger major aggression, and it deprssion, unsupported, in our home environment - beyond the coping ability of any of us.

Re: Ups and Downs of Husband`s Mental Illness

Hi @Faith-and-Hope

So more waiting and seeing while WH goes on with chew-spit and other personality traits that make like disturbing - that is so hard to understand - I understand what you are writing but why there is no intervention by the professionals - he is causing some of your kids problems anyway

But I have to look up that word - and maybe after I have written here I will save the draft and look it up before I post

Does S2 understand that people are free to make their own decisions and just because he has a similar personality doesn't mean he can't make the right choices - it seems he is having to think things through now so I hope his therapy works for him

Now I am looking up that word - and I hope I can find this post again - I usually can

Found you again - great

anosognosia = no knowledge of his disease - wow - he will deny there is a major problem if it causes him drastic consequenses - like loss of vision -

I understand more with that word - but I will be danged if I can pronouce it - I know the g is silent - but I do love words

Thanks for your patience with your explanations Faith

Prayers happen

@Owlunar @Faith-and-Hope..

G'day, Great to see you both. Aplogies @Faith-and-Hope but could you quickly give me a little list of what and hwo is named in your family? As I remember @Faith-and-Hope....... Your husband has issues seperating from his Mother and she interferes in the families life and you have step children ? I apologise if I'm wrong.

Also, you went on a holiday at the end of last year and you were able to clear your head but you still needed to watch over the children's behaviour but you got some wonderful artowrk done. Is this right?

I seem to remember that maybe your Mother in Law went as well?

@Owlunar my friend, how are you? I always think of you whenever I think of study or writing my book.

You are very kind and knowledgeable and your family had no empathy to you when youwere younger and suffering with finances and empitness. You also had a ....meltdpown when your own Mother died. Is this right ?

In my life.....lots and lots has happened. Arlo is banned from pretty much all my friend's houses. I have 2 TWO women that I call friends. TWO. Before, for many years, I couldnt say that. It was too difficult for me to think that I was close to anyone. But these two are real friends.

Hello, @soul and @Determined I dont think I've met y ou ...how are you both ?

Love @PettyPatty
