The Art of Reframing - Back by popular demand!

The Art of Reframing - Back by popular demand!

Hey Forums Friends,

In my recovery, I've often wondered how to better help myself with negative talk. You know? All those voices that tell you that everything will go wrong. All those voices that tell you that you are wrong? Those voices that are the loudest in the evenings?

Well one skill I've learnt and practised and found effective is:

REFRAMING

Reframing is about looking at an issue in a different and more constructive way.

First, we must consider our own perspective. What exactly IS our perspective?

Then, we consider an alternative, more constructive meaning/interpretation.

By doing this, it helps us connect the dots of our story and allows us to look at the issue from a new, more useful perspective.

Example 1: "I never do anything right!"

Reframe: "I feel I never do anything right, but this isn't necessarily true"

Example 2: "All the people hate me."

Reframe: "I think people hate me but it doesn't mean everyone."

Example 3: "My family are so irritating. I can't stand them."

Reframe: "My family is under a lot of stress right now. I know it must be hard for them."

Please add negative thoughts you've come across and the reframe that can be consider. OR, if you are stuck, let the community help you come up with something. Just let us know the thought. No need to name names. You can generalise your comment.

@tyme @Shaz51 it sounds like a skill that I need to acquire.

Can you teach me please?

Keep reading on 🙂 @Glisten

If you have any thoughts you are stuck on, please let us know and we can brainstorm it together with the community.

Have a think about this. If a kid said to you, "I'm not good at walking. I'm never going to do it again until I'm perfect."

What could you say in response to support this child?

@tyme @Glisten @EternalFlower @Shaz51 @Healandlove many thanks for this thread, it's a skill I sorely need.

"I didn't fit in and I said the wrong things"

But

"People were kind enough to invite me and include me and spoke their truth in love when they shut down some topics they weren't comfortable with"

@tyme I would respond to the child by asking “What makes you think you not good at walking? The good part of walking is in the doing. If you’re walking, you're doing good.”

Did I pass?

Give me another one please?

Thought: "I cannot live with this pain."
Reframe: "You have felt exactly this pain thousands of times before, and you have always lived through it."

Thought: "No one will ever love me."
Reframe: "You are loved, even if you can't see it."

Thought: "I am never going to change."
Reframe: "You are working so hard, and you are changing little by little every day."

Thought: "Everything is my fault."
Reframe: "You have been told many times that everything is not your fault. You are not perfect, but you didn't choose this, and you are trying to change it."

Thought: "Everyone hates me."
Reframe: "It is hard for you to tolerate silence and it is hard for you to manage separation - it doesn't mean anyone hates you."

Thought: "I cannot live with this another minute."
Reframe: "Listen to the birds."

Thought: "No one will ever be with me."
Reframe: "Everyone is in this together."

Thanks for this thread @tyme

It’s definitely something I need to work on. I think I can do it with the smaller thoughts but the really heavy ones, I don’t know how.

Incredible @Former-Member @Glisten

Precisely! This is so encouraging to read.

@Glisten

Thought: "I'm a terrible parent"

Thought: "My kids never listen"

Thought -- I can't do anything right

Reframe-- I may do and say the wrong things daily but I know I am still loved
