Sometimes I feel like I’m on top of things and don’t feel like my trauma defines me and I don’t feel so ashamed and scared. Other times I want to hide from the world and feel like a **** (I’m not going to say the word here since I don’t want to trigger anyone) 😭, I feel so ashamed that I don’t want people to know
I’m going back home from uni. It’s hot here in Melbourne and my head is starting to feel heavy

I feel like I’m the reason why I have mental illnesses, I feel defective

I don't think you are alone in feeling that way. I used to always say that to my drs. @creative_writer That because I was mentally in such a bad place, I must have been defective.
Is there a way to reframe that thought so that it is more helpful for you?

Re: Oscillation between two mind sets
We are the sum of our experiences @creative_writer. I used to blame myself endlessly, thinking I was broken and weak. I think moving forward takes a combination of being able to accept that we are the product of circumstances outside of our control - but also not let ourselves become a passive victim to our struggles. It's difficult, but not impossible. You're not defective if your survival-brain is responding exactly how it's supposed to respond to traumatic experiences. But you also don't have to let those experiences define you.

I understand that feeling @creative_writer but no-one asks for a mental illness, I somehow doubt you set out for it and I personally don't think you are defective. Did something happen to make you start thinking about this?

Re: Oscillation between two mind sets
Oh while I was writing two great responses showed up. I agree with @Jynx it is hard but accepting you are actually not in control of some things can be a step to going a little easier on yourself. And @tyme , always a good first response to think if you can reframe things. Some of these views can be so punishing.

Re: Oscillation between two mind sets
@tyme, @Jynx and @Acanthiza, my emotions are running strong right now. It’s so hard not to blame myself. I’ve tried so hard to be like everyone else, but I can’t. I always feel like the sick one, the broken one. There are so many things going in my mind, I’ve always grown up feeling as though I must keep my mental health struggles to myself. It feeds into the shame. I’m sick of having bipolar, cptsd and lots of anxiety, I just want peace. I’m not sure if anything in particular sparked this tonight, my thoughts just went places. For a brief moment I did feel something, but it’s gone, I don’t know if I imagined it. Did I just have a brief body flashback? I’ve taken my meds, so hopefully I’ll be able to stay safe even though I really don’t want to

Re: Oscillation between two mind sets
Tough things to deal with @creative_writer , sometimes it can all feel so unfair. Remember that you are tough as well, you are navigating difficulties that most people have no idea about. I also grew up never talking about mental health. Well I even had a stretch of going into... whatever it is called when you shut down and can't talk anymore. It can change... slowly, slowly.
Hoping for the best for you @creative_writer
