Oscillation between two mind sets

Oscillation between two mind sets

Sometimes I feel like I’m on top of things and don’t feel like my trauma defines me and I don’t feel so ashamed and scared. Other times I want to hide from the world and feel like a **** (I’m not going to say the word here since I don’t want to trigger anyone) 😭, I feel so ashamed that I don’t want people to know

@Jynx I practically put the mental health options above the school. I got 5th preference out of the 10. I would’ve thought you would get a higher up preference for your second placement, but I guess not

@Jynx maybe I’m overthinking. Maybe I haven’t seen real school social work. The other school placement felt like a teaching placement with no qualified mental health practitioners. I wasn’t really gaining social work skills from it. This one has a social worker on site. My expectation include:not being treated like a teacher aid and having more guidance in what I do. I also want opportunities for training, even online training is good. Open communication is important with the social worker. However there is no way I’m doing part time, I want to do full time to get it out of the way so not crossing into coursework

I reckon that's a good approach @creative_writer - you know more now about what you want, and what is simply not good enough. You can set your standards, and ensure that they're being met, if not exceeded. It's your placement experience after all, what good is it if it's not even giving you the experience and learnings that you are looking for? I think it's a good idea to dip your toes in, see how it goes - and if you get the sense that it's not going to actually be helpful to your career, then you can ask for change. Even if it is the second time it's happened, it doesn't matter - this is your journey, your education, and you're allowed to demand it meet your standards.

@Jynx I do ultimately want to go into youth mental health. School may not be exactly what I want but it’s still related. I’ve been wanting to work with teens. I was the most annoying teen 😂. I was a very troubled teen. There was only one placement in my local area related to youth mental health, there were other mental health ones too but not necessarily youth.

It’s just when I get stressed the flashbacks get worse (even if it’s not directly related to SA, it somehow happens), I just don’t want it to get to that stage, the recent ones were very hard for me. Though sometimes it’s just hard to know when they pop up, which is why it’s important to have supportive supervisors

@creative_writer you spoken to your psych about exposure therapy? (Quick side note, I just accidentally typed 'explosure therapy' at first and had to chuckle at the mental image of treating CPTSD with explosions)

I am not saying that during placement is the ideal setting for this kind of thing, but generally speaking in order to reduce the impact and frequency of triggers, we need to be exposed to them to re-wire the brain and teach it that the triggering scenario is actually safe. Do you keep track of or know generally what sorts of things tend to trigger your flashbacks?

I reckon if you're upfront about your flashbacks from the get go, you can ascertain early on whether it will be a supportive place with supportive supervisors, is that your thinking/plan too?

Re: Oscillation between two mind sets

@Jynx we have done some exposure therapy. Explosure therapy does bring a funny mental image.

I have some ideas on triggers, other times it’s a bit harder to pinpoint. I am realising not all of the triggers are directly even related to trauma. Stress can make things more difficult too, like if bipolar gets out of control, cptsd symptoms also get worse.

I’m not sure if I would be fully upfront about flashbacks. If I feel comfortable, I would probably only start with sharing that I struggle with migraines and have mental health issues. It is still a supervisory relationship, not a therapeutic one. How they respond would be very telling. I think I need to ask lots of questions and have a discussion around expectations

@creative_writer perhaps you could keep a journal handy and just make a little note every time it happens, not forever just for a while - try to map out and look for trends and patterns, see if there's times of day or surrounding circumstances that cause them to pop up more frequently.

That sounds wise! Like I didn't imagine you just going in and trauma-dumping on day 1 lol but yes, slowly ascertaining whether or not it is safe to be open is a good way to go about it.

Re: Oscillation between two mind sets

@Jynx I could try noting the triggers. I know recently a song triggered me and my peer support worker could see how it would be a trigger. It had very dark themes, I reckon it was probably about trauma. Even my appointment with my pdoc brought some stuff up. Add sickness to the mix, it all makes sense why it may have been rough lately.

I honestly didn’t get too personal during my last placement. I still prefer to have some boundaries. My supervisor knew I struggle with migraines, mental health-trauma and was ND. At the end of the day our struggles to affect our work and reactions. I wouldn’t go into depth about my issues though because it’s still like a working environment/relationship. If I need time out for a bit, I’ll ask for it, but I don’t have to talk about the details

@creative_writer I'm glad that you're approaching it with this kind of awareness of other factors, and giving yourself some self-compassion by not being too judgemental about things kicking up a bit more intensely of late. It's all practice too - every time you soothe yourself after being triggered, you get a little bit better at it. Every time a flashback hits and you're able to ground yourself/remind yourself you're safe, you reduce its power over you. You got this hun, I know you do ✊💜

Mm I think you're on the money making the distinction between a supervisory relationship and a therapeutic one! You know yourself and your needs best, and if you don't see a need to inform them of the flashbacks, then that's the way to go! You can decide as you go how much information is relevant, and what feels safe to reveal - trust your gut!

I'm off for tonight, I'll catch you tomorrow hun if you're about. Hope you have a nice restful sleep. Huuuugs 💜

@Jynx I think I’m a bit calmer than I was before, took PRN two days in a row. When my thoughts start racing, it gets harder to think clearly. I’m still not great, and I don’t know how long it’ll be until I am.

It’s hard to convince my brain of my self worth. I know I’m letting whatever happened define me so much even if I am not to blame. Maybe I still have a lot of healing to do.

I hope you rested well last night 💖🫂
