Oscillation between two mind sets

Oscillation between two mind sets

Sometimes I feel like I’m on top of things and don’t feel like my trauma defines me and I don’t feel so ashamed and scared. Other times I want to hide from the world and feel like a **** (I’m not going to say the word here since I don’t want to trigger anyone) 😭, I feel so ashamed that I don’t want people to know

Could be that this is something you need to explore with a psychologist though it's contradictory because of the issues with trust and reaching out for support @creative_writer. Sometimes we don't have the answers to big questions and have to sort of agree to disagree with ourselves if we can't. Our thoughts can change over time too so what seems challenging may be easier in the future. RiverSeal

@RiverSeal my psych knows it takes a while for me to warm up, and I’ve spoken about how I feel unsafe around people, but I think it would be worth exploring this in more depth during my next appointment. Have just over a week to go till I see her again. I know humans exist in communities and families for a reason. I’ve been trying to shake off the belief of “better off alone” for a while now. It’s probably a mix of social anxiety and trauma. Avoidance is the natural course of action for anxiety

I’m terrified of my next placement, I can’t afford my CPTSD to be triggered again

@creative_writer how long till your next placement? I can definitely understand the concern hun, I know how much your placement means to you.

@Jynx I got my fifth preference. It starts next month till September. I prefer a full time placement and have it over and done with because otherwise it crosses with coursework. I’m hoping uni can accommodate with dates and have it at the regular time as other placements (May to August). I am not ready for a placement in a months time anyways. It’s also a school, they’re set up with mental health appears better than the school I was allocated to last year but my anxiety levels are going up

@creative_writer totally to be expected hun - anxiety is our protector (even if it gets overzealous atimes) and wants to stop you from enduring the pain of flashbacks - even if it has no way of knowing that that'd actually happen. Could help to try to remind yourself that you managed to get through your last placement, even though you did have some moments of being triggered there. So if it does happen again, yes it might suck big time - but it's not going to ruin everything, and you've already proven you can get through to the other side.

How you feeling about going into a school?

@Jynx I’m anxious, the last school one didn’t turn out right

Different school though right @creative_writer?

Helps me to try to remember - we're pattern recognition specialists, our brains are always trying to predict the future based on the past. But the universe is far more random and chaotic than that. If I find myself saying, "What if it all goes wrong?" I gotta remember to also ask, "What if it all goes right?"

Are you also sorta not looking forward to it so much cos it's a school, and that's not an area of passion for you? I know I never wanted to do my placement in a school, just not my cuppa hey.

Re: Oscillation between two mind sets

@Jynx I wanted a mental health based one but those got given to other students. I guess they didn’t think they were suitable for me. I mean lots of other students have more experience and I’m fairly inexperienced so I don’t know if I stood a chance in the interview process. I sometimes get career confusion, at the end of the day I just really want to focus more on the counselling side of things and do longer term work

Re: Oscillation between two mind sets

@creative_writer Hmm... did you let the coodinators know about where your passions are? I recall it took me a while to secure a placement because I was pretty adamant about not working in a school, despite the fact that about 80% of the placement options were schools. I ended up in a community centre, and very glad I did - way more interesting work, got some really cool clients. I only just made my hours requirements lol but it was worth it cos it was experience that was actually valuable to where I wanted to point myself afterwards.
