Going off alcohol

Going off alcohol

I have schizoaffective disorder and depression. I have had organic psychotic illness since age 19years. My pdoc has told me my brain is vulnerable. They said that I have to stop alcohol. They said it risks my mental health and I could develop dementia if I keep drinking. I know I can do it but am wondering about strategies to stay off it. Have others done this?

Re: Going off alcohol

Hi @Shaz51 I've worked 2 x 10 hour days so a bit over it. But appreciative of my job all the same. So going pretty good.

Thanks for asking. How's everyone else?

Re: Going off alcohol

@Fee1 I'm a public servant and we're fairly busy atm. So it's office work so not too bad.

Glad you're feeling better after the night.

Re: Going off alcohol

@Former-MemberSince the age of 14 I have self-medicated with alcohol and my gp confrmed last year I have an enlarged liver. I lasted 6 or 7 weeks without alcohol because my health was the most important thing on my mind then, but now other things are happening in my life which are making it difficult not to drink. Before then I've had various instances when I've quit alcohol...4 years was the longest...and all of those times I've wanted to stop. And different support groups work for different people.

@Matt12 @Fee1 @Shaz51 @utopia Wanted to tag you in because I agree, finding a support group is like finding a mental health practitioner that feels right for the individual. AA didn't work for me because the talk about submitting to a "higher power" traumatised me further and I ran away half way through the meeting. A few years ago I regularly attended SMART meetings and we supported each other, and unfortunately I couldn't continue to attend as I work full-time and at that stage was working on mental health issues, (still) caring for my husband, and multiple trauma issues.

I wish you all the best.
