Going off alcohol

Going off alcohol

I have schizoaffective disorder and depression. I have had organic psychotic illness since age 19years. My pdoc has told me my brain is vulnerable. They said that I have to stop alcohol. They said it risks my mental health and I could develop dementia if I keep drinking. I know I can do it but am wondering about strategies to stay off it. Have others done this?

Re: Going off alcohol

PS I wasn't 100 percent last night so logged off the forum and cleaned my kitchen. I get all about cleaning as a distraction sometimes

Hi @Former-Member, @Makeitstop, @pan, @Matt12, @vic100, @Shaz51,

Hi guys, have been reading your posts about going off alcohol. I have decided to cut down, mainly for health reasons.......I have gone from 3 or more drinks a day, to 2 drinks a day, to 1 drink a day over a period of a few weeks. Now I am trying to have no drinks per day but I find I wake up at night and cant go back to sleep and feel a bit flat the next day. Anyone had any experiences like this?

Shaz51, you may be able to point me in the direction of some other relevant threads.

Thanks

Fee1

Re: Going off alcohol

I am back on the drink but also cutting down especially on week nights. I tend to stay at 2 or 3 drinks atm on a weeknight. I'd like to have none. But I like your approach - cutting out 1 drink at a time. I don't get down without it so much tho I miss it a bit. I am considering going to the support groups that are not AA. They don't involve religion and don't require full abstinence. I think they're called Smart Recovery. I wish you well

Re: Going off alcohol

Thanks @Former-Member, actually I think the feeling flat the next day problem may be due to the medication I have been taking to help me get back to sleep when i wake in the middle of the night....S*******, though dont think this is a common side effect.

Re: Going off alcohol

@Fee1 - I don't know if I can help much.
I've been reducing my alcohol intake since late last year. Somedays 1 drink - somedays 2 or 3.
I am also on a medication to help me stop drinking. Can take up to 12 months to fully quit with this medication.
Any time I manage to have an alcohol free day - the next day I am more irritable than normal. That would stop if I kept off the alcohol.
Keep up the good work.
Maybe over the next few weeks you reduce the size of that 1 drink.
