Something’s not right

I don’t like feeling obliged to explain

I don’t like feeling obliged to explain

I had a rough call from uni today, I essentially felt blamed for not getting my driver licence already since I’ve been in this course for a while (it makes finding placements harder). I just put it as my circumstances made it hard without elaboration, then she said “right”. I felt judged. Am I a failure for suffering from migraines (migraines can cause mild vision disturbances along with poor concentration, it means I am more likely to speed) and MH? I didn’t explain because it’s my personal life. The placement I turned down in May wouldn’t have been good for my MH either, even if it wasn’t for the distance, vicarious trauma and personal trauma still stings. Now I am looking at getting into a placement that will hopefully be less psychologically demanding. Though no confirmation received yet, I haven’t had the interview

Hi @creative_writer

Are you overhinking and judging her?

The question if you are getting license soon may just be that.

Some jobs can also use drivers.

So that is common.

Not sure how you conclude "almost like....." That may be an assumption based on what you think she is thinking.

Please do not think all questions have alterior motives. Some are just questions.

Some jobs are clear they want workers with licenses.

I think you overthinking, as we do at times, is not helping you. It may make you anxious.

The driving question is fair. The next placement if accepted is closer and near public transport.

Please focus on the good things.

@Former-Member, this isn’t about her, it’s about my incompetence. I have MH and migraines, but I need to stop it from limiting me. When I see everyone else, they are studying full time and are working, many people have personal stuff going in their lives but that doesn’t stop them. I need to have that capacity, I need to be like everyone else. I would’ve been able to afford a car if I was working. I also feel my lack of ability to get my licence is my own laziness

Let’s put it bluntly, I am a failure

Hi @creative_writer

I agree it is not about her.

The part about her is your notion she was or will judge you if you extend health matters.

You are right.

This is about you.

What will you gain by saying more?

Car: I say many people use public transport and survive. I would not with what l do. If you say it is laziness and it is a mission you want to achieve, i encourage you to reach that goal. It may take a few attempts. You will be anxious as we all were. But the effort is a calculated risk worth some stress. I prefer to be a bit stressed than over over confident.

I encourage you to do things bit by bit.

Maybe Focus on placements with public transport. That will open opportunities

@Former-Member, I have to be like other people to be normal. I need to manage huge workload like other people do, my physical and MH are not good enough excuses to live off Centrelink payments, I need to earn like other people do while they study

Re: I don’t like feeling obliged to explain

Hi @creative_writer

I think other "normal" people break tasks down to small achievable tasks.

I do that.

When our to do list is everythjng we need to do, it is too exhausting.

And we need to allow some plans to change as circumstances do.

I do not want to upset you.

I want you to try one or two things at a time.

Forget about car now.

There sounds like an opportunity to do placements.

I disagree normal people do it all at once.

I also battle with "normal"

People set tasks. Prime minister does not run the whole country. They have many many people working on the To Do List

We all have plus and minus things.

What is your priority?

Maybe what are your top two?

How long will they take?

Are they achievable?

I know you are capable. I sense you are overloading your thinking setting huge goals in short amount of time.

They say some good books take Years to write one.

Re: I don’t like feeling obliged to explain

@Former-Member, I just always feel like I am progressing more slowly than my peers. My peers handle a lot in their lives and I am barely managing uni workload. Everyone has drama in their lives, I’m no different, yet how much I manage is lower. My brain has become so inattentive. I feel lazy and stupid. I cannot financially support myself, study 100% of the workload, though still technically considered a full time student with only 6 units per year, 8 is the typical though

I should just move on and get on with things. Migraines, cptsd and bipolar are not an excuse. A lot of people struggle with MH and do a lot with their life, they don’t sulk under the covers

Re: I don’t like feeling obliged to explain

Hi @creative_writer

Who are the peers you refer too?

I feel you have dug such a deep hole you have lost any notion of your successes.

I sit here some days at 8.00am. At 5.00pm i think l will go home now.

And l did nothing all day.

Other days I am productive

Why are you so hard on yourself and expect so much from you? It sounds unrealistic what you want to achieve in a short time only because you are comparing yourself with everyone.

I hear achievements from you.

But you say not as much as others.

Only one person wins a race (generally)

The remaining 5, 10, 20 do not give up.

Many aim for a Personal Best. They just want to improve. We are not all winners of the race but we try and we improve.

You cannot focus so much on others performance and you really do not know what others are thinking unless they tell you.

Please focus on your Personal Best.

There will always be soneone better and someone not as good.

Lower the post. Get over one hurdle at a time in a time that suits you.

You can do it.

Shift your focus to results

Hi @creative_writer

I agree.

Many on the forum are battling.

Get on with things.
