Socialising for Beginners

Socialising for Beginners

Thanks for the encouragement @Jynx
I put it in the Looking After Ourselves section as I believe the forums social spaces do a good job, of allowing the online community to get together in various social ways. I am more interested in working out or working through real life socialising experiences. Where we do not have the protections offered by anonymous online interactions.
Socialising for grown ups who have been isolated and are trying to re-enter general community groups or just trying to meet people is no easy feat. Its more difficult than for children and puppies as we usually have a lot more baggage, whatever that may mean.
From the online dictionary for a start:
verb: socialise
1.
participate in social activities; mix socially with others.
"guests can socialize in a real holiday atmosphere"
2.
make (someone) behave in a way that is acceptable to their society.
"newcomers are socialized into orthodox ways"
Similar words:
interact
converse
be sociable
mix
mingle
get together
meet
Seems to require more than simple social skills training.
I started one therapeutic relationship with that as my main goal. I knew I had limits and was willing to learn, but she was not a great a teacher and eventually admitted it was not her strength. I have accepted that I am relatively introverted and there are advantages and safety with that, but also the yearning for human connection persists within me. So I do not really want to keep myself to myself. This forum has been a wonderful opportunity for me to try different things and meet people.

Just tagging a few who I feel may be interested, but this discussion is open ...

Take it easy @Appleblossom as always my friend !

I love hearing your updates and your insights

I think in some ways I am on the same wavelength atm in my life running parallel to you in fact.

Good to hear from you and i hope the concert is good

went to one last night - orchestral

was strange to hear live orchestral music and my ears weren't accustomed to it - when i watched the recording my partner had on her phone it sounded much better

Maybe this was the music lol

Speaking of - I want to get into music composition as a creative outlet again too
time will tell on that one

see you round my friend

Re: Socialising for Beginners

Hi Everyone

Had lunch with my mum today. I do love her but our relationship is full of minefields. Sometimes the conversation isn’t easy and doesn’t always flow. I’ve pulled back in recent years on what I share and discuss. It’s strange for me yet also more comfortable on my part. I guess I’m less inclined to share generally these days - you don’t have to blab everything to show you’re close. Anyways, the chat was nice. Talked about some positive stuff. Will do it again in the coming weeks.

@Delicatessen

@@MDT Chatted to 2 young men yesterday and 2 today. Feels

@StuF always part of it.

@Historylover Thank you but it has been very up & down. Yesterday no down for me personally but my young neighbour is moving out cos feeling threatened by owner. Who i have known for 15 years and yes can be threatening. Pity i like him. Today my son was too tired to go out and in the end i went alone. I Understand your caution.

@Oaktree Hey beautiful gardener. In an ecosystem we socialise with the plant and animal kingdom.

Today when lost and trying to find theatre talked to the crows. ... Waa waa.

@Delicatessen Only you know the right distance and closeness to be with your mother. Yes it has some key to socialising. For most our first relationship.

Re: Socialising for Beginners

Today @MDT it was about music and the difficulty of making a living with both of them. One I had sung with 12 years ago ish ... and he had plenty get up and go, made a lot of things happen but in the end today he told me he was working for public service. The other was just next to me in the theatre and had decided early to earn money delivering food and keeping them separate and music for pleasure.

Re: Socialising for Beginners

there is always a danger in making your passions into a job hey? @Appleblossom

I am currently thinking maybe I need to switch. Got told I'll be doing 13 hr shifts as of September. Dunno if i like the idea. Feel at odds with myself lately but allowing my brain to unwind is key. Been a weird ride I must say.

Partner said she was proud of what I had achieved so far. Likewise to her too.

Idk my friend. It's a weird time to be alive.

Re: Socialising for Beginners

Aye these are strange times indeed. @MDT

With one of the young men. We laughed at the end and agreed we had made opposite decisions. I had left ATO for children and music and he was signing up. But we are living in different times, generations and gender. I have known him in secular and theatrical contexts and have respect. Horses for courses and decisions should reflect the times and situation.

Sometimes having one's passion as paid work ... is helpful, it means one can put one's whole being in it ...and stop complaining about work as work can also give pleasure ... I stopped earning through it through covid ... and reclaiming my sense of love and pleasure in music ... and music for me ... it is what I need to do now.

What sort of composing were you thinking of?

Re your nice neighbour moving out—it can be unsettling when our familiar circumstances change, @Appleblossom, but change can be good too.

There's quite a bit of down moods going around, it seems. Perhaps the colder weather isn't helping. Another earthquake in Melbourne. Not in my area though. I wonder what the ancients made of these events. Another week begins. Enjoy.
