Hi. My brother is getting acutely unwell. Currently at home on bail. 32 yrs old living with my parents, I live next door with husband and 2 young girls. Brother is not sleeping, paranoid, dilusional, manic, agitated,no respect or care, turning my parents home upside down, painting walls, setting up traps, making a fire pit ect. Paranoid someone or something is going to break in. Thinks my parents are setting him up and tricking him. They forgot to lock the door the other night and when he finallly got some sleep and woke up in a panic yelling and swearing at my parents at 3am telling them off for not locking the door. Accused them of taking his lighter and switching his pockets. What do we do.???how do we talk to him. ? I'm worried when my parents are asleep. I'm starting to hate his behaviour. So desperate right now.????
@Hopeless gosh what a difficult position for you to be in! How frustrating that he is so manipulative... It sounds like all you can do at this point is tell them the truth at the meeting.. That you and your mother are just not equipped to support him so they need to make alternative arrangements? It's hard but you just have to put your own wellbeing first in instances like this 😞 I think your plan is a good one.
I'm sorry we can't be anymore help! We'll be thinking of you tomorrow though, I hope it goes really well.

Re: Help!
Hi @Hopeless. Your brother is angry and is blaming everyone for his situation. He is also controlling your mum and she is so scared of his reactions and threats, she believes she is the only one who can help him. I would try to get to the psych early, so you can see if you can talk to him before your mum arrives. Tell the psych about your brother phoning your mum and abusing her. Tell him your mother is afraid and blames herself for his hospitalization. Tell him your gut feeling is your brother needs monitoring until he accepts he has to have medication. You know your brother and mother. Tell the psych you love your brother, I have no doubt of that, but you fear his home coming and how it's going to disrupt the family. I know you would like him home, but I'm with you in that he needs to stay where he can be monitored. Once he's home, he will overpower your mother with threats and you will be back to square one. Your brother possibly has convinced the psych he is well enough to return. You're going to have to be equally as convincing. Keep reinforcing you love him and just want what's best and right for everyone.

Re: Help!
Thankyou again for responding and caring. I feel really bad that u all probably have stuff going on too and I've only been talking about myself! I'm sorry.
I totally agree with what you have both said and you are right about how mum is feeling. We explained to her that it's our last shot at getting him the proper help he needs, and she agrees, but still unsure. I sent her the photos this evening of some of the evidence of my brothers illness. Hopefully this will help. Thankyou for your well wishes tomorrow. I need to stand up for the family and my own little family because my husband is wanting to move house. We need to do it right!!! Thanks again so much .

Re: Help!
Well brother has been an inpatient in high dependency for 1 week now. It seems as though they are treating him for drug induced psychosis without an underlying mental illness. They think he may have anti social personality disorder. This does not give me much hope. There was talk of releasing him.we pretty much begged for this not to happen as we fear him. They said he doesn't seem to be presenting paranoid anymore and generally keeps to him self and won't talk. We keep reminding them he is a flight risk. He already managed to get a sky light out and tried to scale the wall. There is talk they may put him in normal ward in couple days. He willl get out for sure. Do u think antipsychotics wrk in 1 wk?

Re: Help!
Hi @Hopeless. AD's of any sort can take up to 2 weeks or so to 'kick in'. The patient has to be monitored for side effects/adjustment, etc. It sounds as though your brother is quite a clever actor if he can convince Dr's to release him so soon. Once he is in a ward, if he escapes before he is released, this could go against him as the Dr's treating him won't be expecting him to escape. He has a substance abuse history, if he is not closely monitored, the psychosis could take over and he may resort to violence. See if you can talk to your own Dr and ask if there is some way he can help. It's possible, once your own Dr is aware what's happening, he may be able to talk to the Dr's at the hospital. Tell your Dr of your very real fear if your brother is released. Explain his violent nature, his drug habit, his diagnosed psychosis.

Re: Help!
Hi. My brothers Gp is aware of his admission and all recent events as I was taking my brother to him weekly. Hospital are aware he is a flight risk but not taking this as serious as we would hope. Yes he is ver clever and that is why they think he may not be psychotic normally if that makes sense. They did say they will keep him until tribunal next week and possibly another week. Gosh I hope so.

Re: Help!
Hi @Hopeless. It does seem to be everyone who is aware of your brother's illness is taking it seriously enough. I do understand your fears in view of past antics he has pulled. People who have his MI issues do often appear to be 'normal' so they can be let out of hospital. I think you may have to try to relax and hope the tribunal will review his case history and realize he does know how to 'work the system'. Prisoners often do similar things to get paroled early, but in the long run, early release doesn't help. Often too, hospitals are more aware than patients and relatives think. At the tribunal, no doubt they will review his history, previous escape attempts, violent tendencies etc. The will also review any and all medical notes and the decision will then be made on the evidence they have. Keep your fingers crossed that everything will work out for you and your family. The effect your brothers' MI has had on the family will possibly also come into the conversation. Maybe you could explore the possibility of having him court ordered for hospitalization. Wait and see how the tribunal turns out before you make any decisions.

Re: Help!
Thankyou very wise advice. I know we (the family) keep jumping to conclusions. We need to trust the system and hope they see through him and put things in place.

Re: Help!
Hi @Hopeless. In your shoes it is easy to think the worst. Dr's/psych's etc are notorious for not telling rellies/friends what they know. I'm sure once the tribunal has happened, you will be notified of the outcome. If you don't agree with their finding, I'm sure you have the right to appeal their decisions. It's easy to jump to conclusions when you believe you're not being told everything.

Re: Help!
Update. Brother saw mum on Wednesday for first time (1wk 1day since admission). Told her he had not yet taken any meds and put them under tongue and spit out. For a week the hospital agreed paranoia and dilusional subsided but still a little disorganised. They said he was calm And keeping to self and moved to low dependency. 2 days back in high dep with symptoms same as when he was admitted! Any thoughts on this? They were so sure his psychotic symptoms were subsiding and planning to send him home after tribunal and that his underlying issue may be personality. I didn't beleive he wasn't taking meds!!! But who know!! So confused!
