The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Thanks for checking @NatureLover. I feel a bit lost. I've been out more than usual hoping it would lift my spirits. I sympathise with your "clutter blindness". Yes it all looks worse at night. I can't face it at the moment.

I'm sorry to read this @Dimity 😞

I understand not being able to face any decluttering. I find I have to be in the right frame of mind (I call it "ruthless" but I just mean feeling strong and able to make decisions, I guess).

You just made something click in my mind when you said this - thank you. I have been doing the same. I guess it's avoidance on my part. 😞

Sending you good wishes for strength and decisions and energy 💚

Re: The magic of tidying

Many thanks for your good wishes @NatureLover . Actually going out hasn't been avoidance for me, the reverse, as I've been quite reclusive and suffering loneliness. Maybe it will be energising - I hope so, anyway.

Yes I too need to feel strong and decisive. Again I wouldn't call it ruthless as decluttering also opens up my vulnerability. I think being purposeful is key.

You've made me think, @Dimity .

I hope the going out helps you, and is energising, as you're hoping.

Re: The magic of tidying

Well going out has given me new things to think about @NatureLover which is good. Not sure I can keep it up.

I think we might all have paused @NatureLover @Oaktree but maybe we can nurture ourselves ready for future efforts. Having lost my routine it's hard to know where to start. Today I just swept and dusted. I picked up a bagful of litter on my walk which made me feel a little better.

Hi @Dimity

Thanks for the tag. You are right. Not only have I paused but I have stopped in my tracks. I need to get motivated again. I have been struggling with my mood lately too. Being depressed just makes everything harder. I haven’t felt like doing anything. I am kind of a one problem at a time person. Right now I am focusing on eating better but I do need to get back to my tidying efforts. Thanks for the reminder.

It sounds as though you're on the right track with your food @Oaktree . I do understand re mood and I noticed you had a burst of energy for a while which was very productive but quieter times can be more introspective and reflective, particularly if you journal. You've banked your successes with your bedroom and your seedlings and can bask in their glow for a while.

Re: The magic of tidying

@Oaktree @NatureLover @Appleblossom et al I'm contemplating my humble abode (such as it is) and quailing at drawing up a list of goals so I can get help with it. I'm not sure I have the focus - which is one of the problems after all. Number 1 goal: Set goals. Even Marie Kondo suggests you start by visualising your space.

Dunno how/where to start (again) except maybe following you @Oaktree and @NatureLover and thinking about it room by room. Maybe what activities I'd do in each room once it was decluttered and organised. Sorry to be obtuse but I think I've been brain fogged too long.

Re: The magic of tidying

Hi @Dimity and @Oaktree , yes, you're right, I've stalled too! Just getting the basics done which is laundry, watering outside plants and keeping my bedroom tidy. That's the one area of my house that's usually neat.

Well done @Dimity for picking up rubbish in your local area. That's something I think of doing but am always put off as I'm germophobic. So I admire you for doing that.

I guess with visualising how you want your space to look, you can maybe decide which area of your house is a) quickest to restore to tidiness, or b) will give you the most pleasure to use once it's neat?

@Dimity @TAB @Oaktree @NatureLover @MDT

I am having to rejig some rooms set ups. The sun in my lounge overheated my computer, so I have to move it back into bedroom. Down on hands and needs working out sockets and power boards etc.

I am not a Kondo fan. Do not have spare cash for bestsellers.

I will start moving things around step at a time and eventually will get spaces looking alright I guess. No more computing in the music room which might also be a good thing. Need to move lots boxes or papers and books and having bedroom double up as a study. Still cannot really use spare room as insurance job and mould yada yada. Will try and be a good girl and set time limits and not be up all night online.

Some visualisations can be a good thing ... have a book called Creative Visualisation from the 70s.

.. prob not recommended @Appleblossom but I have modem that battery overheats charging and is slow to charge. seemed to be way quicker if put ice pack (with moisture barrier) under it every now and again lol seemed to stop it cutting out from overheating hence charge way quicker.. but .. new battery may be the answer/ or new fan, or make airgap underneath if laptop.. ask someone ..
