The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Re: The magic of tidying

New Year, new beginning.

I want to have a liveable spare room by mid-April. And be able to visualise any redecorating or renovations by then.

The KonMari method has 5 categories:

  • Clothes
  • Books
  • Papers
  • Komono (miscellaneous items)
  • Sentimental items

So this week I'll make a start and see how far I've got by Thursday. Hopefully I'll have stuff for the op shop.

Re: The magic of tidying

Halfway to Thursday's goal. I have a bag of clothes and a box of books for the op shop (and a bag in the bin and some recycling). Hopefully I can double that. I feel good that I've done a little in every room of the house.

Best wishes for the week ahead @Shaz51 @NatureLover and all reading.

Well done, @Dimity ! 👍

Thank you for tagging me in this thread 🙂

My aim is to get into the habit of doing one hour of extra tidying per day. I am failing miserably at the moment. By 'extra tidying' I mean, working on the backlog of mess.

Re: The magic of tidying

I haven't often achieved the hour @TAB @NatureLover but I'm improving. I set a 30 min timer. Trying to go beyond my depression mindset of just the washing and washing up being enough.

Hi @TAB @Dimity

I’ve come to the realisation that the only way to tidy my fridge is to eat. The seriousness of the situation became evident when a friend gave me 6 small bags of chocolate…and finding room for them was a serious undertaking. I’ve also resolved not cook anything new for a while.

And then I saw Kensington pride mangoes on special…
