The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Re: The magic of tidying

.. Hearing you re 'race to the bottom' @Dimity if I hadnt moved so often .. most places were varying levels of mess and clutter, plus had storage.

Hope yr Phd work is somewhere safe. harder now with new rules I think.

I only got copy of my honours thesis last year (from 24 years ago) took months of effing around between local library and Uni library. Local library had to request it so then they would make a copy and send me the bill. Was funny , at the start looking around found an abstract that someone had edited (ie were not my words) it wasnt something that got missed between, drafts as it was something I would not have said. they said they changed it ok was on library site, had first few pages or something

Re: The magic of tidying

That's odd @TAB I've never heard of faculty or the library editing a thesis abstract. Smacks of interfering with intellectual property.

Glad you have a copy now. At least you would have typed up the body of it yourself. When I was an undergrad there were still typists transcribing longhand. My attempt was around the same time as yours.

Re: The magic of tidying

idk the process.was not my words anyway, maybe it was a description of thesis, but it wasnt right.

@Dimity

yeah did it all on my Pentium 166 desktop and floppy disks lol For some reason I baulked at getting extra copies where were very cheap and would have been simple Oh well.

yeah I started uni in 97. never heard of typists. there were typists when in public service in mid 80s. oh and at schools. Ican remember they used to teach it at school in like 1976

Re: The magic of tidying

I prob said go allsorts all over house things never did. Yes, go blind to it. I went mad on pile behind kitchen door tonight. Took so much out that I notice it now and place feels sort of empty.. that's a worry. Going to get a shed to spread junk outside lol

@Chantarelle just crap everywhere if I look. Of course I need 5 sound systems/speaker set ups,I use 1. Sometimes another one. Got 4 guitars not played in over a year plus should get rid of at least 2. I want some clear flat surfaces so cat can feel more comfortable plus mice in house now. Cat has become a mouser but can't get through all the junk to catch ones already in house lol

Support button not working. Can't sleep.

Take it easy @TAB Rome wasn't built in a day.

On my journey I had to stop buying in more stuff as well as start downsizing stuff I already had. And recognise stuff that was just rubbish I was hanging onto. Basically 3 choices for my stuff: throw out, recycle, donate.

Seeing some empty spots is a welcome sign of progress before other stuff migrates there.

Re: The magic of tidying

..pretty much @Dimity I forget I managed to sell couple things last spring. Got stuff

  • To be posted to charity
  • To goto charity bin
  • dropped@ private house who asks for deposit containers for boyscouts
  • Um dump/recyclers for car parts not worth selling

Burn stuff (doing now)

Anyway, more action soon

Re: The magic of tidying

@TAB @Dimity

After I posted I got wondering whether it sounded like I was starting a my house is worse than your house competition but for me, it's still very new to say I have so much crap that I can't even see it anymore, and to have people genuinely say they understand. It's really intensified for me over the last three years, so not that long but it still feels incredibly freeing to actually talk about the crap in some detail instead of just making jokes about how I haven't unpacked yet.

And I also don't want to compete about who is better at fixing it, but I'm feeling good this week! Day 3 of a 25 day challenge and I've taken out 3 (small) loads of rubbish including a couple of things from the fridge. My walk in robe is a tiny bit more a walk in robe instead of walk over stuff robe. And I treated myself to take away dinner last night and was actually able to put it on the bench to serve it. Although it's impossible to actually see any difference, I'm feeling more comfortable than I have in a long time and I'm really hoping that I can maintain it this time.

very good @Chantarelle just trying to not make things worse here for a while guess

Re: The magic of tidying

Getting to Day 3 is good @Chantarelle . Yes isn't it nice when there's space to put something down!

Today I've looked at my coffee table and kitchen table and dealt with a few things but not cleared a space yet. I'm getting better with the kitchen bench.

@TAB Not making things worse is absolutely an achievement

@Dimity As always I had such plans for the weekend, and as always, did nothing but do puzzles and watch TV. I'm not sure why but awake at 4 this morning after a weekend of feeling like crap has left me a bit fragile today. Ice cream for dinner and hopefully an early night to reset a bit tomorrow
