The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

🫂 Hugs @Chantarelle backsliding a bit is sadly only to be expected... even with the best intentions, so be kind to yourself. Perhaps it's a waltz, two steps forward one step back. It's certainly not linear.

Waking early and feeling fragile? Take care, I usually do that when not quite right and feeling particularly stressed.

You've been doing well so give yourself credit for that, and don't fret over a couple of days' respite.

Re: The magic of tidying

Thanks @Dimity Your kind words really mean a lot to me and have been playing in my head all day. It never feels like a waltz though. It feels like one step forward and six steps back as a punishment for thinking I could achieve stuff. I constantly feel like I'm in a cycle of during the week of being too time poor do anything and then on the weekend being too tired and needing too much down time to do anything.

But I'm determined to not backslide. If I have to stop, so be it, but in the vein of I'm not going to make it worse, I have so far kept both the coffee table and the bench top clear. And I slept last night so do feel much better today. Currently zonked out in front of the TV, but I might get outrageous later and force myself just to take some rubbish out

Re: The magic of tidying

@Chantarelle I experienced that unrelenting cycle when working. Looking back on it it's obvious to.me my mh and general wellbeing weren't being supported adequately if at all by anyone... professionals family or my few friends. Work colleagues were adversarial. How are you placed?

Not making things worse... good point... I've been guilty of that. At present the steam cleaning and bit of reorganisation associated with Tiger's passing have been a bit of a re-set.

Re: The magic of tidying

@Dimity I am so sorry for the loss of Tiger. They leave such a gap. My house was so much quieter after Missy's passing, but I still had all her things around me which was tough. Was it sudden? Or did you have time to prepare?

No friends or family in my world which is fine as I like being on my own. And there's nothing wrong with my workplace except I'd rather not be there and I wish I didn't have to people for so much of my day. I tell myself that's why things are so hard after work, but I know that's an excuse. I just had a 5 day easter break and achieved nothing. It's part of why I was so determined to be productive for the next few weeks, both during the week and on weekends. But I've crashed pretty hard over the last couple of days and I'm not quite sure how to get going again

Re: The magic of tidying

@Chantarelle hugs I've crashed too... selfcare is in order I think.

I was a workaholic, always pushing myself to survive at work which meant enormous effort then doing little except sleep at home.

Tiger had been going downhill for quite a while. He was quite elderly, nearly 20 so I'd wondered how much time was left. He suddenly deteriorated overnight, and I had to decide whether I could manage his condition without greatly distressing him, the vet confirming it was likely progression of his dementia. We'd already been keeping him comfortable and painfree but it seemed time to let him go. I couldn't have coped.

I'm going to wash up for the first time in several days. Bin day today, that's done. But I'm feeling low. Let's give ourselves a bit of grace for having made an effort, and for wanting to come back to it when able.

@Dimity @Chantarelle @TAB @Shaz51 @tyme

After trying to get motivated for weeks, last night I swept and mopped the activity, dining rooms and kitchen. Just now I swept and mopped the lounge room floor. I even moved the couches. Feeling proud of myself. This weekend we have to move stuff back into the kitchen areas. Also make room in my daughter’s room as she is coming home on Wednesday.
