The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

@Dimity

Yesterday's ten minutes was take some rubbish out and clear the coffee table. Not much, but I deliberately planned the smallest amount possible on my first day back at work. But oh my goodness how nice to come home this arv to a clear coffee table! It still has stuff on there that's supposed to find another home, but it just feels so much clearer. I hope that you're seeing a nicer space after all your hard work too.

Good work @Chantarelle @TAB

Yes the coffee table could be the first thing I do in the livingroom.

I need to clean the lines of grout on the shower, the home help simply doesn't do it. Thank goodness I might be able to do it now, I couldn't when she started.

Re: The magic of tidying

i get most of grout done @Dimity there is some that is siliconed like in corners, needs to be removed and replaced. has done for near 3 years lol .

I though was on top of things w kitchen table where I spend most of my , well, Life, but its disaster again,and pile of boxes and cardboard in corner has grown back again.

might be time to

  • donate deposit containers
  • spend 30 mins flattening boxes and take to bin ✔️
  • also can use some to stop weeds and some for fire, ha✔️
  • have two bags new clothes and books from internet been sitting around forever. books werent what I thought they were and clothes didnt fit. yet I still buy online..
  • also a parcel been on sideboard forever with old phones in it to donate .. ffs been there a year now maybe
  • also have clothes over backs of chairs that never wear . time to put them away. Have chest of drawers but drawers dont work properly, needs to be fixed , ah ha , but still functional.

UPDATE since started msg attacked cardboard pile. Most is gone now. in bin or next to wood heater.

..also found a mini plum pudding unopened haha , couple extension leads, some boxes for computers etc will keep.

@Ta

When I moved house in 2022 I set aside a space on the kitchen bench (nothing is supposed to live on the bench) for laptop and cords and stuff to take to electronic recycling. It's literally a little basket of rubbish (OMG I just realised where that basket is that I was going to store my toilet rolls in!!!) and yeah you guessed it, 3.5 years and it's still there. It's been there so long that I don't even see it anymore. I can't tell you how valuable it is that I can share this with people who understand. Thanks

@TAB @Chantarelle I guess it's not a competition but I reached peak clutter 9 years ago and have been whittling it down since. It had been building up for a long time.

I have a lot of old computers from work and study I should do something with but I haven't faced up to the drafts of the PhD I abandoned. There's other stuff I'll face first.
