The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Newspapers strewn on that part of floor soaked most of it up @Dimity lol

It goes

  • Read
  • Floor
  • Bin when too many 😆

I'm curious to know - if you set a timed goal each day, do you set a timer? Part of me hates the idea of something so regimented, but I think if I don't set a timer then I'll set a plan and spend the second half of the time checking the clock to make sure I don't go over my limit. All very silly I know, but I'd love to hear how other people manage it?

@Dimity sorry I missed your comment on the other thread. No, kitty didn't end up working out. I'm kind of cranky at the rescue lady as she wasn't entirely honest with me, but honestly, I'm mostly relieved. I was looking forward to seeing how I'd go with a second cat, but I think I'd prefer not to. It seems that you recently lost a cat? Mine crossed the rainbow bridge nearly 2 years ago and I'm surprised at how much I still miss her ❤️

@TAB cleaning the fridge is HUGE. I have so many empty packets and stuff in my fridge that I get overwhelmed just opening it. I'd really like to buy a new fridge which means getting this one clean so they can take it away, and honestly, I just can't see it happening. So big congrats to you for such a big achievement!

Re: The magic of tidying

Hi @Chantarelle sorry to hear the second kitty didn't work out but I'm glad you weren't locked into an unworkable arrangement.

Some cats seem to thrive being an only cat. Mine did, after a stint with others.

Yes I lost him a couple of weeks ago. It was a bit difficult there for a while.

Yes I set a timer. One advantage is it's clear feedback that I'm putting in a quantifiable effort that I can record in my mood/activity tracker. If I'm up to it I can follow on with more sessions.

I just came out of a 6-7 week period of sustained effort. I didn't achieve anything huge but it was gratifying as I hadn't been successful in anything similar before.

@Chantarelle I hope you're keeping on top of use-bys for your health. No judgement but a while back I cleaned someone's fridge and there were veg and fruit plastic thingies and other stuff with dates 8 years old.

I'm hoping to have another go at boxes of papers I last tackled 3 years ago, when I got so upset someone called an ambulance thinking I'd had a stroke.

I'm sure there's a funny side to it somewhere.

Re: The magic of tidying

@Dimity

No doubt my fridge could be more hygienic than it is (that's probably true for my whole house) but there's nothing really nasty in there. It's more like I finish a tub of butter, and I have to rinse it out for the recycling but who could be bothered? And then suddenly there are four empty tubs in there and for some reason (and I think a LOT of my problems come from this) I can't just rinse out four tubs and throw them away all at once, and now there are eight empty butter tubs, and aside from the obvious thing that I know I should do, I just don't know how to make them go away.

But... I have a 25 day goal to make some new habits. And that includes each Friday tackling one of those items in the fridge. It all feels so small and insignificant, but no plan I've ever made has stuck, and they all end up feeling overwhelming, so small and insignificant it is. For now. I'm seriously impressed that you've been so productive for 7 weeks. Please don't say it's not huge because you know that it is. Gratifying and successful are massive words! Well done

Re: The magic of tidying

I get you @Chantarelle . My system... with a double sink and no dishwasher... was to pile catfood and other containers in one sink then do a batch.

Onya for a 25 day plan. I'm toying with the idea of another 40 day project, this time tackling the scary livingroom clutter. But I'm not sure how to pace myself. Before Easter it was to get a load to the opshop every fortnight.
