The magic of tidying

The magic of tidying

Decluttering and minimising. Taking control of house and garden, nurturing body and soul. I've read Marie Kondo and read a little on a related Swedish method and feel inspired. I've been a borderline hoarder and lived with depression for too long and want to take the initiative. Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone who'd like to try with me?

I've sorted my books and uni notes. I've decided to sell some furniture when lockdown lifts. But the other papers and STUFF in the house and the jungle outside have me beaten atm. Some mutual encouragement and support is the only thing that's going to get me through. I know I'll have to face some decisions like "will I ever use that fabric stash" or "how many books in the TBR ,pile is too many" or "where do I start in the kitchen". Boxing isn't the answer, it was a temporary reprieve.

It's going to be a contest between my commitment to getting sorted and the looming possibility of having to move and downsize for my health. Having control of my space will be a win in either the old space or a new one.

Setting goals. Celebrating achievements. Sharing life hacks. Is anyone on board?

Dimity.

Re: The magic of tidying

thanks @Dimity and well done re aircon I have rooftop evap which is good 80% of time have to use it but it cant do that much on 40 plus days or when humid

keep telling myself to get a refrig a/c and perhaps a ceiling fan, but it would be 1 room only, not sure whether would do lounge or bedroom guess a/c have already is okay for sleep as most it gets to at night is 30ish on a bad night anyway need to put that on a list lol

Re: The magic of tidying

I have ceiling fans in the bedrooms @TAB and they're fantastic on hot nights. They've been wired into the light fitting and incorporate a light. I recommend them.

Re: The magic of tidying

yeah they are way better than a pedestal fan @Dimity my brothers both swear by them, prob cos cheap to run as much as anything. I have had them staying at places and they are good even if have a/c on. Just have to find a good one. Friend got dodgey mate to put a couple in at her place, they were awful, could barely turn themselves lol, would have to have a good imagination to think they were actually anything but useless lol .

Wow!!! I just logged on to reply to @Dimity and am so grateful to you all for your comments, support and suggestions @TAB , @HenryX , @Shaz51, @Former-Member.

I'm so glad I posted here today. I'm feeling much less alone in the process ahead of me. Many thanks forumites.

@Dimityyour response was not at all intrusive.

I've been living Off Grid for over two years now and it is indeed both glorious and challenging. It has unfortunately become more challenging due to me dropping the ball during lengthy periods of depression.

As to four legged friends I do have a beautiful horse but she is being cared for by someone else, as I am currently unable to give her the attention she deserves... 😢 Getting her back in her paddock and attending to my overgrown food forest are priority "outdoor goals".

I won't be tackling the shipping container until I have a shed or other space to utilise and definitely not before my caravan and outdoor living area (kitchen/shower) are sorted.

I agree that minimising in the caravan is key. This is my priority "inside goal".

A positive is that I know I can exist comfortably and effectively in this space, as I did so when I first moved out here.

The Daylio App sounds interesting. I'm going to check it out. Thanks for the tip.

Take care, RedHorse 🌹🐴

Re: The magic of tidying

I think living in a mess is can be a security thing as well @RedHorse I like it when rooms are tidy, makes me feel good, but there's a tiny undertone of'gosh this place is Big and Empty and only Me here ... not had shower here since late nov person replacing it decided to have a month off over christmas .... so lots of baths lol

If you think about it mess wastes a lot of energy, plus I often cant find things etc, found heaps today lol

Anyway, just got to catch up with the putting down to picking up ratio I once told someone i had set a goal of picking 3 things up a day .. that's not pretty lol, I refused to let people into flat where I was living out of shame, well , just needed a weeks notice to knock things into shape lol, roaches got away from me, when eventually moved the fridge were like 200 under there lol, geez I live in luxury now , compared to what I have done in the past lol

Re: The magic of tidying

well mine is indoor gas bottle shower lol @RedHorse I remember outside showers when in Army used to fill a canvas bucket up and pull it upon a frame with a rope, the nozzle rotated like a tap, got wet, thats like 30s to a minute put soap on , rinse soap off , Very functional. yeah I used to book certain rooms in motels as had a bath tub etc this is first time in like 15 years have had access to my own bath, ok did in mid to late 90s for a few years lol if had shower working, would prob use bath 4x a week at least. Esp if not working, just lie in it and soak, which reminds me, I have already run bath here soz. its a good bath not tiny like most these days

Hi @TAB, @Dimity, @Shaz51, @Former-Member, @HenryX and others in "The Magic of Tidying.

I've just gone through and read the thread for further inspiration as I am feeling disappointed with my lack of progress since my last post and all the support that I received here.

I am the world's worst (or best) procrastinator. I blame it on feeling overwhelmed but realise that I need to just begin...

I have set myself the goal of clearing and cleaning the caravan sink and bench area tomorrow.

I have a habit of feeling hopeful and motivated in the evening only to crash into despair and avoidance on waking in the morning, so I'm putting this plan out here to make me accountable.
