Walking for Wellness and Healthy Habits

Walking for Wellness and Healthy Habits

  • So I took part in Topic Tuesday this evening on Physical Activity for Mental Health. I feel motivated so I am going to give up my couch potato ways and start to make an effort to get outside to walk for exercise. I am hoping that I will improve my mental health whilst losing weight and increasing fitness. I am going to keep you updated about my progress here. Feel free to join in - the more the merrier! Maybe we can help motivate each other.

Re: Walking for Wellness

Sounds beautiful @Appleblossom - just heavenly.

I was just thinking about trying to commit to walking even if it is raining, myself. I think it is important.

Although I am undecided about forcing myself to walk on the weekends - maybe just if it happens (and oftentimes it will by default). It doesn't feel great when my steps for the day bottom out at 50 or something! Hehe.

How do you approach this?

Re: Walking for Wellness

@sol_87 I used to be more disciplined about walking every day, but no longer. I am out and about most days and try and keep it a truly wellness activity and not to much about duty. I definitely do not count steps ... lol ... I used to do a lot of counting at school and working in the govt ...I used to count a lot of reps in exercises or a the gym ... I began to really crave functional exercise ... and started to extend my gardening activity ... so if it something I have to do for them (I have a few gardens) then I am more purpose directed.... these days NOPE no more counting. I know there are apps ... etc ... not my style.

Today was prearranged and others were involved so we kept on with the plan and the rain was slight ... added to the atmosphere....

Your walk sounds lovely @Appleblossom

@sol_87 when I was walking every day if it was raining I would head to my local shopping centre and walk laps inside. Do you have a local shopping centre that would be good for that?

Sometimes you have to think outside the square a little. The security guards got to know the sight of me and used to smile at me. I am starting on Lite n Easy on Wednesday so I guess that will be a good time to start walking again.

Thanks @Oaktree @sol_87

Its a good idea to perservere through with a range of weather conditions, and find a way that suits. Volunteering at a zoo helped me get out during winter: rain or shine. We had to walk and guide on the paths, and plenty of rugging up with layers, hats and uniforms etc. It got me over the winter hibernation stage I had been in, which just had me getting more and more sensitive to the cold.

I do think regularity is important. Dont worry about my foible of being anti - counting ... its just me and my allergy to digital tek. lol ... ironic .. now, as I type on a keyboard online ..lol

As a kid I walked to school rain or shine ... I love the beach in winter too ... sometimes its the heat that is tougher than the cold ...

Love this thread.. so inspiring @Dimity @Delicatessen @hanami

Hello @Appleblossom and @Oaktree

I guess that is why I am so fond of incidental exercise. It provides an impetus to get up and out, no matter what the day or the weather.

Sounds like that is what was happening at the zoo.

No worries about the anti-tech - each to their own! I like to have a goal to reach, I suppose.

I don't have a shopping mall near me, but I do have an umbrella! 😉

Have a good weekend.

Well it was community day in pokemon go yesterday so I walked around with my son for nearly two hours. We weren’t walking fast but by the end I was tired out. I went to bed early. Little wonder I am awake now at 5am.

Re: Walking for Wellness

Hi Everyone

I must confess the urge to walk or hike pretty much wherever is well and truly ingrained in me. The only things that would stop me are blizzards, tornados, cyclones, earthquakes or tsunamis. Unless of course I’m already out when they hit!

I went on a hike for a few hours recently when it was raining quite a bit and predicted to do so for the remainder of the day. And yes I have everything I need to do this very comfortably. Rain gear and all.

What I didn’t count on were the very gusty winds. I had to walk, hunkered down, like I was drunk just to stay upright.

I did manage to do the walk and can say that the vista throughout was spectacular. When finished I was still very much on a high. But I have mixed thoughts on whether I’d do that again.

In thinking about even these experiences, I can still say that I love everything about hiking and walking. I love the feel of rain on my face.

Re: Walking for Wellness

That sounds like fun @Oaktree ! I walked a lot yesterday too. I found some second-hand shops to get stock for a new startup idea. Then I was walking to public transport connections. All up, about 10,000 steps. 🙂

It is another beautiful day, so I want to get out and walk to get a healthy Vietnamese slaw for lunch. It will be a few more steps to add to the tally!

I hope you have a good rest today!
