Memories

Memories

When I was in high school I often didn't pack a lunch. Partly laziness, partly nothing much there to eat. I'd chuck a couple of apples in my bag and a can of soft drink (which cost 50c back then) and then not eat the apples because bleh. But they were there if I got too hungry.

I was friends with a girl back then and she started noticing I didn't ever bring much food with me. She started out pretending like she wasn't going to eat all her lunch and share hers with me. Eventually she started just packing extra snacks--fruit buns I recall--for me to have. Wednesday's she'd buy her lunch from the canteen and she'd get me a hot chicken wrap. She mothered me a lot back then. She didn't have to, I didn't ask, no one told her to, she was just a really good person.

I think of her often, and I feel very grateful to her. She was always very kind and caring. I remember I started calling her "Mum" as a "joke". But it wasn't really. She took good care of me like mother's are meant to.

It makes me ache to think back on it now.

Re: Memories

Hey @Emelia8 just thinking about your post from earlier re needing to get breast check done. How do you go getting medical things done?

I really struggle getting any kind of physical procedure or exam done now. Used to be able to manage despite the uncomfortable nature that goes with those things but since starting therapy and digging around in all that ugliness, I just can't do it. Been a few things over the past few years that have needed attention but I can't get past the anxiety around it. Supposed to get checked for a fun hereditary thing every couple of years but haven't done that in a long time. Have refused to have a minor procedure done by my doctor. I have a stack of referrals she's given me over the years for various things but I haven't been to any of them because it will involve being physically examined. Even just this thing with my back where it gets so painful that at times I can't even walk. I still can't push aside the anxiety to get a check up. My doctor tried talking to me about the hereditary thing a little while ago, I know I need to get the friggen test done but even having the conversation had me melting down--panic attack style. She hasn't mentioned it since then haha Tried talking with psych about it, but got too distressed with it, he's also not gone back there either.

How do you go with taking care of your physical health? Gimme all your tips and advice please 🙏

Re: Memories

Same as you by the sound of things @saltandpepper 😳 I have a great deal of difficulty over any physical checks. When having radiation earlier this year, I went into panic meltdown when a male technician came in unexpectedly. I had to talk to the manager and explain I could not have a male tech in future.

The usual female regular checkups ... for me they are a nightmare, literally. Usually dont happen. Though last time I got special permission for a self administered test coz 2 seperate nurses failed. So ummm, yeah .. my surgeon apt on Friday is causing stress. He is a male too.

I'm sorry to hear you are putting off having important tests done. Far beit for me to advise, given my own reluctance, but honestly you need to find a way to get those tests done. You are only what .. did I read 31? Half my age. 😜

Please find a way to allow it to happen, make it a priority aye? You want your son to have a loving Dad who can do all the fun growing up things with him, dont you? ♥

Re: Memories

Ooph @Emelia8 I'm so sorry. I wish that hadn't happened re the male tech. They should ask things like that before appointments I feel. I hope the self testing thing can be an option for you in all future tests--why is this not the standard way to do things anyway! Haha Did you check ahead and make sure there's no dodgy fellas hanging around for your Friday appointment? Good onya for being so strong and taking control of your health the way you are. You gonna treat yourself after your appointment on Friday? I used to bribe myself with a big bakery cookie to get through doctors apps haha doesn't work anymore though

Yeah the kid card, you're right. I definitely need to for the sake of my son hey. Ooph. That's conflicting. Will need to think on that for a bit. Damn it, that's going to make me go get it done isn't it? My brother is just as terrible about getting these things done, we tried making a pact years ago that he'd get his check up if I got mine. Neither of us have budged yet

Yeah 31, don't feel it though haha

I really hope you can make it through Friday as smoothly as possible. I feel the anxiety for you. Wish we could just do all our own tests. Probably wouldn't get very accurate results though I guess.

Re: Memories

Yes thats the problem @saltandpepper ... the self test I did is nowhere near as accurate as the usual PAP test. Trade off I guess. I think you and your bro need to talk again about getting those tests. No, I dont have any treats planned for after Fridays apt. My treat will be knowing its done and I can get out of there and back home again. 😄

Re: Memories

@Emelia8 Well I mean it's gotta be better than no test right? You gotta get yourself a treat, get some of that marble caramilk chocolate that I scoffed down the other night. So good.

Yeah, maybe, he might make me do it though if I bring it up haha

Re: Memories

Yes @saltandpepper ... thats the idea ... doing it. So definitely talk to bro. Yes, the test I did was better than none at all. They dont like approving them though, and my GP had to recommend it, using my trauma history as the reason.

Re: Memories

Yeah but I don't want him forcing me into it. He's understanding to a degree with my issues but I think he doesn't 100% get it. I don't know. We don't really talk about it anyway.

@Emelia8 yeah can imagine, but they should offer it to people and make it an option I think. I'm sure it's something they could educate people on how to do, maybe? There must be so many people who avoid getting this kind of stuff done, if there was an alternative it'd probably save a lot of lives
