Things took a turn

Things took a turn

Hey all. I'm struggling pretty badly and I am feeling very stuck. I guess I am crawling back here, looking for somewhere safe to land (like a nest maybe). I'll try to keep it brief (and I am likely to fail at that).

Things had been going really well, in a way that I had been juggling heaps but keeping it together. My hours increased at work, I have been supporting family, the kids are all busy and bonkers etc - there's a lot but there always is. It's stressful and at times close to too much, but I do it.

The turn came about two weeks ago when I found someone close to me (my "friend", Mr Person, intimate partner person - whatever it is) part way through a suicide attempt. I was contacted by his distressed parents to check on him as they had concerns so I went knocking and got no response. I called the police and they took way too long and were unhelpful. I ended up taking him to hospital myself. It was really quite terrifying and genuinely traumatic. For quite a while I thought he was dead and fully expected that's how I would find him, and I wasn't too far off in my thinking when I did find him. On the way he told me I had been busy and distracted lately which went straight to the very ouchiest of ouchy bits of my brain and my heart. The thinking part of me knows it was his choice and I couldn't do anything about it. But the feeling part has gone very wonky.

Since then my own MH has taken a pretty significant turn. I've had flashbacks, panic attacks, overwhelming anxiety. My chest feels like it is being crushed constantly. It's physically excruciating. I can't sleep despite some pretty mega meds. I am agitated, restless, really down, overwhelmed, exhausted... it goes on. It's like instantly all things PTSD that I had worked so super hard at managing, have come racing back. I feel like if I drop anything, if I let anything go, everything will fall down. I feel like if I am not in control of everything something terrible will happen. I feel like nothing I am doing is good enough and if I can't do it good enough then I am failing and if I am failing what's the point and if there's no point in one thing what's the point in anything. Dark, twisted and scary thoughts are back in full swing, with some added SH thoughts in there this time too which is unusual for me. I feel like I am letting everyone down, like nothing I do will be enough. No-one can see how much it takes to keep it all together and how close I feel to not being able to anymore. It feels, once again, like it's all too hard and too much.

Of course being this time of the year all my regular supports are on leave (as everyone's are). CATT were called which I was OK with and thankful for as I know some extra support. They're supposed to be there as a safety kind of net while my supports are away but it's not really helping. Instead I feel like I am wasting their time too. I struggle so badly to talk to them, a lot because they don't ask questions that help. They've told me they don't know what to do with me. I am "high functioning" and a perfectionist. It seems like people think it's all OK because I can still do things and on face value I am fine. On top of that, as an unhelpful helping person pointed out today, obviously things are OK as I haven't acted on thoughts so I must be managing them well (major eye roll). I don't know why I was hoping that it could help.

I'm stuck and hate that I am here once again. It's infuriating that my head scrambles and breaks the way it does. I wish I could just be sad, or tired, or worried. Not this.

I am trying super hard to not feel completely awful that I am here again in this space after so long not here. I feel really bad that I haven't come by before now.

Thank you for getting this far if you did.

❤️ @CheerBear .....

Yes, grandbaby arrived safely and I am with the western dragons, with a couple of eastern ones temporarily resident here too ...... but D2 and I fly back in the not-too-distant future for legal reasons. Things appear to be improving by getting worse ..... but I am sure you understand that seeming contradiction by your own lived experiences, and I hope this year will be much better if the current course stays in place. Sharing of your past circumstances has provided me courage and strength more than you know, and you are not often far from my mind and heart.

Gently, gently caring bear ..... 🌷

Re: Things took a turn

Thanks for the tag @Maggie 😘 You are both always close in my heart.

@CheerBear . I totally get why you have been through the wringer with everything. It's so complex at every turn.

My very late thoughts, in a very in your face random way. I had lots of feelings reading about what has happened.

You've been busy! I'm not sure where you are at now with Mr Person but I wanted to share my thoughts. I also went through 'you were always busy' with my ex as the reason for his offending. It's bull:pile_of_poo:.
I have been the unwilling participant watching this play out in close relationships with my kids. I am loathed to fly in here and leave advice, but I have two things that are close to my heart in regard to this. When the horrible and really big (undeserved) feelings have lessened I hope you can think about how these fit into your values.

1) I will be responsible for me for you, if you are responsible for you for me. I'm not sure if ive shared that one with you before. Teejsplaining it means I will look after my health, both physical and mental so I can give you the best of me if you do the same. It looks easy but it's actually quite a challenge to live this. It requires both people in the relationship to actively participate in their responsibilities.
2) no one person can fulfil someone's needs. It's not possible and if they did they would be void of having their needs met.
One of my sharks is working through this in their relationship.

Secondly I totally get how you would feel invalidated and angry at said mh team telling me that I've got through this before and seem high functioning. For a start youve never got through this exact set of circumstances before so there is no precedent. I still get the very big feelings lots and have come close to asking for help (a break to reset) a few times this past year. I feel very strongly that this is about mh wellbeing, not about testing if you can get through this without the real supports that you think would help. Your mh history should be enough to know that if you need support then you need support, in what ever form that is. Big sad and angry feelings from me that this has been a struggle. 😢🤬. I have felt unheard a few times in the past year because I've been 'doing better' (code for surviving without much extra support). When I feel the big overwhelm and am expected to cope because Ive proven that I can it makes getting through harder.

And about all those very big feelings about being here.......Ditto x 3

I don't know why it becomes harder in our heads but it does. I'd imagine though that we are not the first to experience this. I think of a few close members who have gone and come back from time to time........and we've been excited to see them, have had empathy with them when they come back because of turn in their mh and eagerly wanted to support them if we are here. Sooooooo @CheerBear would you say to me about my big feelings of coming back when things are hard. Hmmmm 😉 😘

im really sorry that this happened for you. One of mine has learned the price of being a rock for many can be your own mh deteriorates. I know you've been the rock for many and it can be a crushing weight at times on its own. Go easy on you and I hope you get a chance to get some much needed support to find a way through this.

Big hugs 🤗💜

Hi @CheerBear. Just wondering how things went with your psych and if he helped you feel understood with where things are at right now?

Re: Things took a turn

Dear @CheerBear ... I too am wondering how you got along at your psych appointment yesterday. Hoping you were able to convey to him how things are with you right now, and what you feel you need in order to get through it. I know that a hospital stay has been very successful for you in the past, and you certainly seem to have a very good handle on what works for you and what doesnt. I realise its not an easy thing to organise however and there will be a lot to do in order to make it happen ... work, kids, etc. But I also know its important ... and nothing is beyond you. Sending love and strength from someone who greatly admires you for a whole heap of reasons.

Emelia 😊💕💪🌺

Re: Things took a turn

My psych and I decided hospital was needed this morning so he called CATT to work it out. There are no beds, in any of the hospitals in the network. I could go to ED and wait for a day or 2 but the stimulation would be the opposite of helpful as they, my psych and me understand. CATT have just come over (the first time I've let them in my house for 9 years) to check in on me but that's all they can do.

The plan is an awful one - just keep going. I'm holding on by a thread.

Broken system 😔

Re: Things took a turn

Oh @CheerBear I am so sorry this system we have IS so broken and you cannot get the immediate help you need. Stay here with us for now and let us carry you forward. I know that does not replace at all that you really need right now but you have us to support you in the interim

Re: Things took a turn

For me to ask to go to hospital it has to have become bad. It's not their fault and they too believe it's a broken system. But now I'm left with a "be careful not to push it too far" kind of message, in relation to all the things that I'm doing that are not ideal. "Be careful" relies on me caring and on me having a thinking brain that actually knows what it's doing, which I don't.

They couldn't have done much more I get it. But with the bronchitis analogy, it's like rocking up to the hospital saying youre really finding it hard to breathe and that you're close to stopping breathing so you need help to breathe, and having them say they're busy and to come back when you've actually stopped breathing and maybe then they can try something.

It makes no sense at all.

Re: Things took a turn

No it really does not make any sense @CheerBear and it is also not okay. Can you have someone look after your LF and go to the ED. It really seems that you need to be monitored right now and that may be the best place to get that immediate help.
