Things took a turn

Things took a turn

Hey all. I'm struggling pretty badly and I am feeling very stuck. I guess I am crawling back here, looking for somewhere safe to land (like a nest maybe). I'll try to keep it brief (and I am likely to fail at that).

Things had been going really well, in a way that I had been juggling heaps but keeping it together. My hours increased at work, I have been supporting family, the kids are all busy and bonkers etc - there's a lot but there always is. It's stressful and at times close to too much, but I do it.

The turn came about two weeks ago when I found someone close to me (my "friend", Mr Person, intimate partner person - whatever it is) part way through a suicide attempt. I was contacted by his distressed parents to check on him as they had concerns so I went knocking and got no response. I called the police and they took way too long and were unhelpful. I ended up taking him to hospital myself. It was really quite terrifying and genuinely traumatic. For quite a while I thought he was dead and fully expected that's how I would find him, and I wasn't too far off in my thinking when I did find him. On the way he told me I had been busy and distracted lately which went straight to the very ouchiest of ouchy bits of my brain and my heart. The thinking part of me knows it was his choice and I couldn't do anything about it. But the feeling part has gone very wonky.

Since then my own MH has taken a pretty significant turn. I've had flashbacks, panic attacks, overwhelming anxiety. My chest feels like it is being crushed constantly. It's physically excruciating. I can't sleep despite some pretty mega meds. I am agitated, restless, really down, overwhelmed, exhausted... it goes on. It's like instantly all things PTSD that I had worked so super hard at managing, have come racing back. I feel like if I drop anything, if I let anything go, everything will fall down. I feel like if I am not in control of everything something terrible will happen. I feel like nothing I am doing is good enough and if I can't do it good enough then I am failing and if I am failing what's the point and if there's no point in one thing what's the point in anything. Dark, twisted and scary thoughts are back in full swing, with some added SH thoughts in there this time too which is unusual for me. I feel like I am letting everyone down, like nothing I do will be enough. No-one can see how much it takes to keep it all together and how close I feel to not being able to anymore. It feels, once again, like it's all too hard and too much.

Of course being this time of the year all my regular supports are on leave (as everyone's are). CATT were called which I was OK with and thankful for as I know some extra support. They're supposed to be there as a safety kind of net while my supports are away but it's not really helping. Instead I feel like I am wasting their time too. I struggle so badly to talk to them, a lot because they don't ask questions that help. They've told me they don't know what to do with me. I am "high functioning" and a perfectionist. It seems like people think it's all OK because I can still do things and on face value I am fine. On top of that, as an unhelpful helping person pointed out today, obviously things are OK as I haven't acted on thoughts so I must be managing them well (major eye roll). I don't know why I was hoping that it could help.

I'm stuck and hate that I am here once again. It's infuriating that my head scrambles and breaks the way it does. I wish I could just be sad, or tired, or worried. Not this.

I am trying super hard to not feel completely awful that I am here again in this space after so long not here. I feel really bad that I haven't come by before now.

Thank you for getting this far if you did.

@CheerBear I’m so sorry you are going through so much. It all sounds over the top overwhelming and then some. Coming back to a nest sounds like a wise and scary thing to do, so well done.

I think I get a bit of what you mean with the looking like you are doing ok stuff. I said something similar to my counsellor, like I feel like I’m not bad enough to be HEARD, and not good enough for the NORMALS. I actually said I should dribble and wet myself to get a response. Sorry about the graphics, I was frustrated. Eye roll. Long story short, I hear you.

Leaving some 💕💕💕💕💕☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️

It’s good to see you. 🌹🌹🌹👍👍

Re: Things took a turn

@CheerBear I think everything you're feeling is a normal response to what has happend with your Mr Person. I wouldn't begrudge yourself for feeling anything that crops up right now. What happened IS traumatic and it is going to take time to process. Any feelings that come up for you deserve attention. Be kind to yourself, acknowledge what you have seen and dealt with is traumatic and you need to show yourself some kindness. Acknowledge your feelings and accept them as a normal response to seeing someone you care for go through something so awful.

I went through a similar experience many years ago and walked in on my (at the time) partner attempting to commit suicide. Even had a note for me there and everything. I've been through and seen a lot, but that moment, that was something else. It's only been later on on life that I've been able to see the impact it had on me. I remember feeling like I had to squash my emotions and feelings down because I wasn't the one trying to take my life. I thought I didn't have a right to feel anything. But I was wrong.

What happened, what you saw, what you felt, what you had to do, the conversations you have to have, it's all going to have a lasting effect. Allow yourself to feel whatever comes up and try to be kind to yourself. Don't dismiss your feelings here, acknowledge them.

Something else that's jumping out at me here is your Mr Person stating "you've been busy". This statement, whether intended or not, is emotional blackmail. In my case, when my at-the-time-partner did what they did, it was done when I attempted to leave the relationship. Ergo, my fault. And I felt that for a long time, that I was responsible. But I'm not, and neither are you.

People who are unhappy, who are willing to take their own life, can't be saved by anyone but themselves. No one is responsible for their choices except them. You are not responsible for Mr Person. Whether you're busy or not, whether you're there 24/7 or not, whether you're off enjoying your life or not, it is their decision. You have every right to spend your time as you choose. You can not be responsible for anyone but yourself. They can't expect anyone to make them want to live, they can't expect anyone to fix things or make things easier. That's a choice they have to make. Mr Person has no right to lay the responsibility of whether he lives or dies on your shoulders, the only one who is responsible for that is him.

I hope this helps @CheerBear And I'm really sorry to hear what you've had to endure. Wishing you all the best.

Re: Things took a turn

Thank you all so much. Everything inside telling is me I shouldn't have come back. That here is somewhere else with people I haven't done right by. I'm having such a battle in my head at the moment. Nowhere feels OK.

I'm driving myself completely mad with this intense pull to do, organise, fix, work through, solve, call, go, sort... I can't get a break. I have messed up thoughts about how to release some of the pressure and I feel very broken thinking the way I am. I wish it would stop. I want to be able to talk about it to the people here helping but I can't find the words.

I'm tired but full of energy. So frustrated at myself 🙁

@CheerBear This is exactly where you should be. We love you, no matter what. We all mess up, that’s the one thing we all have in common. So snuggle in with one of your magnificent blankets, and let us sit, drink coffee, listen to birds, giggle, cry and listen quietly with you. That’s all we want to do. The past is gone, today is another day.

No words needed. Sending you buckets of 💜💜💜💜 I’ll hold out on the coffee, you are energetic enough.

I’m glad you came home. Big love. 💚💚💚💚🌹🌹🌹🌹

💜🌷💞💜💞🌷💜 ..... @CheerBear

Soooo glad to see you back, but my words are what everyone else has been writing here, so I won't say them all again, but I haven't read anything on the thread that I don't agree with whole-heartedly.

Just sitting here with you amongst your forum friends, with love and support always.

Re: Things took a turn

Thank you Maggie and F&H lots ❤️

I am walking a fine line at the moment and think what I really need is to be in hospital which I hate hare haaaaate to say. I know myself well enough to know that a couple of days to chill my brain and give myself a break from fighting so hard could and would make a huge difference. It has worked in the past and could work now I'm sure. My coping at the moment is maladaptive in a way it hasn't been for a long time. While it's clearly helping as I am still keeping on, it feels like it's only just helping and not far off not. And that soon it won't be helpful and could easily be quite harmful.

🙁

Re: Things took a turn

You have so much insight @CheerBear ..... do you need to feel support behind stepping up to that decision ? You have it from me.

If it was bronchitis, and you knew you had a history with bronchitis, and you knew the warning signs that told you your bronchitis was at that tipping point where hospital treatment was required to stabilise it and support your body to heal, that is what you would (maybe just as reluctantly) do .....

I hope that reframing helps a little ? You matter, and what you are going through matters, and no matter what the nature of the illness is, support, care, and medical attention matters ......

Please keep looking after you ❣️ If we can help you take the baby steps, please lean on us.

Hugs ..... 💜💞🌷

Re: Things took a turn

Thank you Faith-and-Hope ❤️. You're super right with the bronchitis analogy. I see it and know it and have tried so badly to communicate how hard it's become but either I suck at communicating or they suck at hearing. Possibly both.

I messaged my psych who is on leave from the practice he works at (not from his other job) and asked about an earlier appt than the end of next week, thinking maybe he'd squeeze me in at the start of next week. He's made one for me for this afternoon which I am incredibly thankful for. I will tell him what's been going on and where things are at.

Thank you again. I hope things are OK in your world (maybe there's an extra little now 🐣❤️)

Re: Things took a turn

@CheerBear I would second going to hospital.

I’m hoping, after seeing your psych, that might be in motion.

Sending more 💙💙💙💙💙
