Not sure what to do

Not sure what to do

I have been with my partner for a year and I am aware he has had alot of tragedies in his life before he dated me. I am aware his ex cheated on him then left him when his dad passed a few years ago. Along with that his friends left him as well. So not sure if this is reason why he is currently pushing me away. He isn't a very open person but has told me how his sibling has mental issues which therapy past 3 yrs havent helped the sibling. Plus I don't think the mum has been coping either leaving him to have all this reliance on him. I know he has anxiety and was seeing a therapist at one point but not sure if he still does.

Few weeks ago a friend passed away and he did come over the next day which was surprising but of course when I asked if he is ok he responded yes. After that he has shut me off. I text and miss call everyday to show I care and only after a few days later he will respond I am ok just needed some space. Which leaves me to think he doesnt need it anymore. He also later mentioned how he is now going through a life crisis with a big birthday milestone coming. I asked him multiple times if we could catch up to talk cause i miss him but also so i can figure out what I am suppose to do to support him through this. I dont know if it is a good thing even though am chasing him that he does text me every 3-5 days to say he is ok just needed space. Last week he even said he been wanting call me but needed space. Again not sure if that is a good sign.

Mid this week, after not hearing and seeing him for few weeks, i felt worried he is drifting away and I texted him to express that. He lashed out in his reply saying how he had put alot of stuff in the back burner due to work, family and other spare time for me. This was not something I was aware off cause he never told me. He also mentioned how now he is going through this life crisis and it appears am holding it against him for not fixing it when in fact I am anxious cause i care about him and want to support but he doesnt help me understand how support him and pushes me away. He said he would love have my life and that I should not feel anxious and count my blessings when he has it worst and appears to not break down as much as I do. I replied asking him if we could talk cause obviously I want to understand if he still wants be with me and if so compromise a way I can support him, ie give him space but he needs to text me he is ok every few days etc. He has not replied.

The message he sent I believe is part of frustration due to my insecurity plus the night before his sibling acted up big time. I don't think his message was a break up..my friends says that if he did it would be face to face. I am aware he needs his space but I so desperately want to talk to him to figure out if we can work this out together. Understand if he wants be as his support and if I am a positive influence in his life. And if he does want my support I will give it but he needs communicate better, ie tell me earlier and text me if not everyday, every few days he is ok.
I am not sure what to do since I want to really talk to him but he doesnt want talk to me yet and it is making me struggle not knowing when. I want him to know I care a great deal but not sure how to reach out. Also his birthday is coming soon so was gonna text if i dont hear.

If anyone has got any advice I appreciate it.

Re: Not sure what to do

@Anony18. Think I'll be giving him the 'heave-ho'. He's just rung to see if he can visit tonight. He actually said, if I come over are you going to remind me again to lock the door. He sounded so childish and petulant, I can't be bothered. If he can't respect me and my feelings, he aint worth it. I'm not feeling very well, my right breast is extremely painfully itchy (I'm undergoing radiation for breast cancer), bf knows this. I don't need crap from him.

@pip. Is he going to come over then? Try explaining to him why it is important and if he is still acting childish about it then definitely give him the heave-ho. Something that may seem small to him is actually a big deal to you for valid reasons and if he cannot just do something simple like that - definitely not worth it. Oh dear - that isn't good. Does the radiation make you really tired?

Re: Not sure what to do

@Anony18. The radiation is making my breast extremely sore and itchy, and yes, I get tired too. I'm also having legal issues with my ex. I tried to initiate divorce proceedings last week, my lawyer sent him a letter indicating what was happening, also a problem with a car. My ex sent me an email calling me everything, flatly refuses to co-operate, refuses to sign petition etc. Trying now to set up a meeting with ex, his representative, my lawyer etc, to try and sort something out. Possibly won't be divorcing, can't afford court costs, lawyers fees etc. This crap with bf, I need like a hole in the head. Don't know whether to explain to bf tonight, or simply sort it, then tell him. My male friend indicated bf's don't like hearing 'baggage', he has to be told what I'm experiencing though. I thought people in relationships had to be honest about everything, including ex spouses/bf's etc.

Re: Not sure what to do

@pip. Sorry to hear what you are going through. It is quite a bit going on and understand how frustrated you are and the last thing you need is bf to be childish over something like this. Divorce is definitely a costly thing and not easy when the other party is not cooperative.

From my perspective - people in relationships definitely need to be honest, particularly about the big things. This situation with your ex spouse is important. You are not asking him to pity you but understand the stress that you are experiencing in your life and be a supportive shoulder for you to just talk to if need be. That is what a partner is for - just listen to your rants, and at times be a good sounding board if required. We all come with baggage - some more than others sadly - but it is up to each individual to determine if they willing to stick around with patience and resilience.

Hope my advice makes sense and helps. But definitely up to you to decide what you like to do. Just know I am here to talk if need be

@Anony18. I'm also scared of him getting violent. I don't know him well enough and the thought of being hit over something so important scares the $$%% out of me. I was a battered wife for a while and I'm terrified of going there again. I don't think he's violent, but not sure how angry he could get.

Re: Not sure what to do

@pip. That is not good being physically abused or even emotionally/mentally to be honest. Is there someone who knows him well enough to know? If you are worried of him being violent, is there someone who can be on standby? It is concerning, worrying and really scary but if he gets violent from you telling him the truth, you know that he definitely isn't someone to be with plus I suggest reporting him to the cops. Really wish I could be there physically to make sure things go alright for you now

Re: Not sure what to do

@Anony18. Just woken up. I tend to sleep a lot with radium treatment. Bf came over last night, we talked. He admitted to being forgetful, he was called thoughtless, but I disagreed with that statement. He asked it we could put it behind us and start afresh. I told him I was a bit nervous in case he became violent, he said he's never been violent, abhors violence in every way. The only other down side is, I've lost another person I thought was a close friend (male). We used to communicate on fb, he has completely blocked me. I find I can't be bothered with that, this particular person has bipolar and is pretty good at being brutally straight (which I appreciated), but when I said something, he blocked me. I will give my bf a 2nd chance, but if I feel we're not suited, I think it's better not to get his hopes up. I care about him whether it's love, it's too soon to say. I think I'm a bit gun-shy when it comes to 'love' and commitment.

Re: Not sure what to do

@pip - glad to hear that you manage to talk to bf and establish he does not resort to violence. That is important for you to understand. It is fine to be forgetful (we all have our moments) but the important thing is that he acknowledges that he needs to make a conscientious effort to lock the door as that is important to you. Good you giving him a 2nd chance - to be honest seeing how you guys go is all you can do. Take it one step at a time. Nothing wrong with being gun-shy about love and commitment particularly given your history. All that matters is that you giving him a chance and hopefully he (or if not him - someone else) will help you overcome that.

OH - am so sorry to hear that. It is always hard when you lose a close friend cause that is losing a confidant in your life. It is unfair that he can tell it to you straight but yet cannot receive it back.

Re: Not sure what to do

@Anony18. I'm not too concerned about the loss of this other friend. If he is that selfish, I've lost nothing. My bf is not coming tonight, his Dr gave him some strong pain killers for his back (he injured it last week), I'm actually rather relieved he isn't coming, much as I like his company, I think I'm starting to enjoy being on my own. We are supposed to be going away for a weeks holiday in the near future, when I've finished radium. I may yet suggest a weekend, rather than a week. Bit scared of a full week with him. I'm starting to get into a routine of what I like to do each night and I'm rather enjoying my freedom.
