Changing meds

Changing meds

Hi. I battled MDD & acute anxiety nearly all of my adult life. I've been on numerous different SSRIs, SRNIs, antipsychotics, tried rTMS & ECT. Am addicted to a benzo for my anxiety.

I am in the process of swapping out from a SRNI to a MAOI and the wash out period is hell. I really don't think I'm going to make it. This is the darkest place I have ever been.
I have no family support, honestly no friends, not able to work & are completely isolated.

i don't feel my medical team actually care much anymore, they are overwhelmed by new clients because of covid.

i hardly sleep, but the last thing in my mind before I do, is how much I want to die. It's the first thought of the day when I wake up.

what if this new medication doesn't work either??

Too easy @WIP Tag me anytime Hon and I will get back to you as soon as I can. I do know how hard this is so more than happy to walk this road with you when I can

@Zoe7

When this overwhelming hopelessness consumes me, the negative thoughts I have, start to turn into beliefs. I have such a negative mind atm.

Re: Changing meds

That is what depression can do to us Hon - it is all consuming, dark and feels never ending @WIP

Turning those negatives into positives is so very hard. Have you thought of keeping a gratitude journal? Sometimes writing down even the smallest of things can all add up in a day. It may be as simple as 'got up and showered". On the days that you cannot do that it is good to look back and say 'on that day I did that so I can do it again".

Re: Changing meds

A gratitude journal is a good suggestion, thanks @Zoe7

I'll feel a bit silly writing down such simple things, but that's where I am at the moment. Basic tasks can seem unachievable some days.

I need to find some hobbies to occupy my time, so I don't keep the negative 'radio' playing in my mind all day.

Re: Changing meds

To be honest @WIP I felt the same way back when I did something similar but over weeks it made a difference. I am also a list writer so making a list of things I could achieve in a day helped me ...and yes putting 'shower' or 'wash up' etc. were often on my list. It may seem mundane and 'normal' for somebut when you struggle to do anything in your day it really is an achievement. We all needed to start as babies takingthose first tentative steps and as our confidence and ability increased we began to walk - see it as a similar process - nothing is too small and no achievement too little - it really does all matter.

Re: Changing meds

My negative talk is so LOUD @Zoe7

I go for a walk and see the couples and families and tell myself 'you'll never have that', everyone in Vic is so happy about the 25km restriction being lifted, so they can go and visit family and friends - it makes no difference to me, I've got no friends to go and see - I say that to myself 100 times a day 'I'll never have any friends, I don't like myself, so no one else will'. They talk about ppl being allowed to go back into the office to work, I say to myself 'I'll never work again' and then catastrophise, how I'm going to run out of money soon, I'll have to sell my house - how will I deal with the stress of that.......and on and on the negative talk continues.

As I said before, it's all too hard and I'm running out of fight.

I put so much hope on having a supportive medical team, cause I don't have anyone else. And this week have been let down again.
I can't do it on my own, and this illness is bigger than I am.

Sorry, I'm going to log off soon. Getting upset at myself.

Appreciate you chatting with me @Zoe7

Thank you so much for your kindness.

Look after yourself.
WIP xx

Re: Changing meds

You probably won't get this now until tomorrow @WIP so going to leave it here for you...

I felt much the same way a few years ago. I got sick (physically) and that lead to full on depression, anxiety and CPTSD resurfacing. I was in that dark place and felt there was no way out. I had no friends to turn to and no-one in my family because they just did not want to know I was so mentally unwell ...as had been the case previously in my life. So all I really had was my supports around me. I know right now you do not have that either and that is incredibly hard. But being let down and not trusting in anyone was all I had know so I very much get that

It took me over 2 years, lots of help and support from the members, mods, community managers and counsellors here on SANE to get me through that. There were many, many nights that members would sit with mwe and hod out hope for me when I had none myself. SI was high for a very long time and I had absolutely nothing to live for (even my fur babies I thought would be better off without me). I cannot overstate enough how the support here helped me get through each minute, hour, day, week, month ...I had nothing - no job, no friends, no hope , no life but here I am now - back working, still alive and some days are better than others. There is a little joy back in my life - not a lot but enough to sustain me when it gets bad. And the biggest thing that has happened for me is that I can allow myself those down days knowing that I can (and will) drag myself up again - I never, ever thought that was possible.

I am not at all saying it was (or is) an overnight fix - it took 2 years to get the right meds, combinations and dosages that helped me find some kind of hope - but it did happen. I am also nowhere near okay but each day I put one foot in front of the other and walk this road with a little more light guiding the way. My hope for you is that you can find that support you are so admirably searching for because you both need and deserve it ...and along the way if the support you receive from us here keeps you walking that dark path until you too can see just a glimmer of light then that is what we will do.

There is a life out there for you Hon - it may not be the one that 'most' people believe it should be but we make that up as we go along. You have more strength than you know and are capable of achieving whatever you put your mind to - it just takes that little bit of help to begin the process. We are not defined by our illnesses but we do also need help to navigate the minefield that comes with that. ....so I will hold onto that hope for you - because you are worthy of a better life and you matter in this world

Re: Changing meds

Hey @WIP ,

Im sorry things are just crap at the moment. I can only sit with you and journey with you at this time.

In terms of:

Pain is inevitable.

Suffering is avoidable.

It took me a while to comprehend. How I see it is that suffering is a result of how you perceive a situation. You can be suffering in an 'awesome' situation because you crave something more. Or, you can be content in a 'horrible' situation because you've learnt to perceive it that way. Does that make any sense?

I hope you can find rest tonight, and perhaps tomorrow will be a better day.

Hugs,
