Seniors Matter

Seniors Matter

Senior Matters 'cause Seniors Matter!

Q&A

What do you picture when you think of a senior person?

What age decade do you think someone becomes a senior?

When should a senior retire?

How do other cultures treat their seniors?

When you think of 70 year olds acting like 50, or a 50 year old living like they're 70... The line becomes quite blurred, with who's 'older'

Of cause everyone would agree that an 80 year old is definately a 'senior' citizen.

So where is the official line that defines Aussies as Seniors?

The answer is 60 years old.

I applied for my seniors card, to try claim all the discounts (I never remember to ask for... when I received the card I was delighted to read the official letter thanking me for being such a wonderful contributer to the Australian community 😇👍 but deep down... something inside me screaming... I'M NOT OLD!

The years of constantly struggling with CPTD anxiety & depression... the years have got away with me and now, im old 😞.... reality is... my body is ageing... the mirror says so, there's wrinkles, there's grey and white streaks, its harder to move, I'm forgetful, i get nervous, lack confidence, I dither and rummage in my handbag, people are starting to pop off around me more, hospital doctors all look 12 yrs old and my friend's kids have grandkids.... This is entirely unacceptable state of affairs and I need support.

I go to the doctor... but sadly even doctors bother less with our aches and pains and worries. She says:

"All part of ageing" -

"not much we can do"...

"not much point doing an x-ray when it's almost definately just arthritis..." 😞 In other words

SUCK IT UP!

Why don't they just have a 'morning after 60 pill' or a euthenasia back door.. How can i face this ageing thing and all the sadness by myself when the doctors even don't care.? Really triggers the SI, how can they not know this and be kinda?

There

was a distinct difference in the way I'm treated since turning 60.

Always echoing in my mind is the comment a GP said about one of his older seniors "past her useby date" Oh dear, it's like we're already dead, but

we just gotta go on like we're not and won't. 😟 😞 Can't stop the decline. Just have to

- roll with the punches

- go with the flow

- age gracefully ...

But sadly, even in Mental Health, there's this undercurrent that "it's too late" for us seniors. Set in our ways they say... the less likely we are to change... and that might be true because we've seen so much, morphed for others a million times, and yes, kinda somewhat disillusioned with constantly changing systems that focus on money more than humanity... Sometimes I wonder if some structures are created to puff out the workforce more than service provision.

But truth is, my biggest hurdle is my deep beliefs about ageing.

- I planned to 'check out' at 50 because everyone gets sick after 50...

- i should have it all together at my age (ha, not happening, getting worse)

- the Kidz will bring the grandkids over for Sunday lunch and I'll love cooking for them... (not happening)

- my hubby will grow old with me, and talk together and hold me close every night. (didn't happen😞)

DOES ANYONE RELATE? OR HAVE A SENIOR ISSUE TO TALK ABOUT?

Appleblossom and Peace have raised senior issues this week...

- RETIREMENT and MOBILITY

I'm hesitant to reveal my age these days, so when it's non consequential, I take off 10yrs. People listen more to 52yr old than they do to 60yr old.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE 60 TO CHAT HERE. OR REVEAL YOUR AGE.

Just love to hear your experiences.

Re: Seniors Matter

Silent bullies are such cowards, feel sorry as they must be so very unhappy in their own skin. And it amazes me how people don't mature out of it, especially the seniors.

Ha, reminds me of my stubborn pursed lip mum, 3 days before she died she called at me while I was looking out the window in her room, thinking she was asleep, she said

"I do love you you know" 😲😞

People can be so stubborn, even to the end, sad ☯️

I love that @Former-Member 💓😊 ... live the story you want to tell. I gotta say that the mug alongside the book looks pretty yummy too. How is your exercises going @Former-Member ? I have been doing my weekly pilates class for 6 weeks now, only missing last week due to local flooding and closed roads. I was back again yesterday and our instructor made us work even harder than usual I think. Although maybe that was my imagination .. and I only felt it more intensely because of a week off?

You've been fairly quite since your birthday I think, although I've been off line a bit myself too, so I could be wrong about that. Anyway I hope you are okay, and your little Georgia Girl too. I am yet to get my Holly's blood tests back from the vet. Its been a week now, perhaps delays due to the flooding in the area meaning the samples took longer to get to the labs.

Thinking of you EOR. Sending love and a firm hug.

Emelia 😊💓

Re: Seniors Matter

Thanks for sharing that @Former-Member and it's good to hear from you. Are you in lockdown? We're confined to barracks here awaiting covid results.

I had ECT this morning for the second last time and am feeling very groggy...looks like an early night for me. When I got home I found out I had to get a covid test!!!

Re: Seniors Matter

Ahh @Eve7 I had wondered if you might be mixed up in the latest covid outbreak. Something in this mornings news had me thinking of you. Hope your covid tests are negative.

Second last ECT ... wow, so next Wednesday will mark a significant milestone.

Sorry you are feeling groggy. Are you working tomorrow, or taking a long long weekend?

Hiya @Adge ... take care buddy.

Re: Seniors Matter

I am sure it will be negative @Emelia8 it was only because gd had been in a "hot spot" on Sunday morning that we had to have one.

No more ECT for me after next Wednesday. It's been a long haul.

Not up to saying much, floating. Got a Bit of a head cold today - went to get tested but 3hr wait rediculous when ya sick so went back to bed. What does it matter when ya isolated anyway?
@Eve7, I Forgot you were in Brizzy - so is my son. Wonder if they'll open up for easter?
Emelia, not good on the exercise front, not sure I ever will be. Glad you are doin better. GeorGia had vaccination today. She had ear wax flushed out, and needs teeth cleaned under anaesthesia. She really quiet tonight, hope she's ok. Hope your Holly's bloods are ok & she doesn't get sick on you.
@Adge - I hear you, hugz 🐦🐦🐦🐦

Re: Seniors Matter

Hi there @Former-Member . Sorry to read that you are suffering from a head cold. They do make one feel very miserable.

I guess Brisbanites will hear this morning as to whether they will be able to open up for Easter or remain in lockdown for an extended period. Really hoping of the former.

Little GeorGia had her vaccinations yesterday? Holly is not due for her for another few months. She had her teeth cleaned when she had her other surgery, so thats all done. She had never had her teeth cleaned before. Has GG? I hope GG is back to her normal self today. I know Holly is often a bit quiet after her vaccinations, but rebounds quickly. Its over a week now since Holly had her blood tests, and still no call from the vet about results. I just rang the vet to see if the results are in. The receptionist said they had come in just this morning, but she wasnt sure if the vet had seen them as yet. So he will ring me some time this afternoon.

I hope both you and your Georgia are feeling better today. Do you have any plans for Easter? Do you go to church, perhaps catch up with some other parishoners?

Emelia 💞🤗
