Any diagnosed germophobes or hoarders on this forum?

Any diagnosed germophobes or hoarders on this forum?

Hi, I have just joined. I have a few mental illnesses, but am especially interested in hearing if there are any diagnosed germophobes or people with hoarding disorder on these forums?

I don't know any germophobes in real life, and would be interested to know how any of you pre-Corona germophobes are doing. Can you find enough sanitiser? If not, what are you using instead? Has your germophobia gone sky-high in this pandemic? Do you find it less or more lonely now that nearly everyone is a self-confessed germophobe?

My germophobia is quite bad - I can't have anyone in my house, and need lots of sanitiser when I go out. E.g. I use it after leaving my house and before I get in the car; again before I touch the steering wheel, again after touching my purse, again before putting my seat belt on, etc. I am struggling to find enough sanitiser. If I run out, I was thinking about diluting some disinfectant and putting it into an old water bottle to take out with me. I had one really bad panic lasting 3 days that was debilitating, due to COVID-19, but after that thankfully my germophobia came back down to normal levels. I guess normal levels are not that great but at least I am used to them!

I am strangely finding it more lonely as a diagnosed germophobe now, and would really like to meet some other germophobes online and hear how you're going. At least I had a friend tell me that I was in a stronger position than him, during this health crisis, as he had trouble remembering to wash his hands, whereas I wash them a hundred times a day already!

Thanks for noticing, @Dimity - my S.A.D. hasn't returned yet, amazingly, although I'm expecting it to.

My work email was opening OK yesterday, so I did Friday's work yesterday.

Well done for planting out your pots. Hopefully that will mean less watering, as pots dry out quicker then the ground.

Good luck with the mystery of finding your therapy homework...

Now to reply to your other post separately, as I can't view it while responding to this one!

Hi again @Dimity , no, my house is very out of control! I had a nice lunch out on Saturday, then work yesterday, meaning I haven't tackled the house. I keep forgetting that the smoke detector check is overdue!

Well done on working on your kitchen.

It's not a work day today, but I have a psychologist appt that I haven't prepared the notes for. Got to get up shortly and do that. I hope things slow down a bit for me soon.

I'm not sure when your psychologist appt is this week, but I hope you come across your homework soon.

Re: Any diagnosed germophobes or hoarders on this forum?

I hope your psychology appt went well @NatureLover . Mine is Wednesday.

I'm glad your tech problem didn't recur yesterday.

I'm feeling bogged down but made a couple of allied health appts. I don't understand how chronic health management plans work now, I've been given conflicting advice about referrals and subsidies. I stopped seeing one person because I didn't trust what they told me, and they tried to coerce me into unnecessary treatment because they thought I was under a plan with them (I wasn't).

Yes my place is out of control too. It feels hopeless.

Tomorrow would have been craft group. I'll miss it very much but the rudeness of one lady had become intolerable, and there were hints the absent matriarch still had issues despite catalysing the split of the group into separate rooms. And the volunteer in charge was sidelining me. But I'll miss the kind ones, and the break from my four walls.

Too much detail.

I'll try to delve into the clutter for my homework and missing glasses.

Have a good day tomorrow. Perhaps it's hard for you finding the happy medium between being too busy and not enough?

Never too much detail, @Dimity .

I'm sorry about your craft group.

Yes, my psychology appt went well thanks. Good luck finding your homework before Weds 🤞

Well done for making the health appts. That's not good about being coerced into unnecessary treatments. I hope you can get it worked out so that the advice is not conflicting. I've got conflicting advice about MHCPs too.

Yesterday I did errands after my psychology appt. I was proud of myself as I tackled the chemist. Recently I lost control of my meds by starting to run out - very unlike me. So now I'm a bit all over the place and keep having to go to the chemist, instead of just once a month. Then I have to have a full shower and hair wash afterwards.

Maybe yes, re happy medium. More likely I need to "roll with things' better than I do.

Good luck finding your glasses, too.

Re: Any diagnosed germophobes or hoarders on this forum?

Yes it's hard getting prescription refills in sync @NatureLover . You might be able to sneak up on it by going a few days earlier for a couple of months. I have a med that's 28 doses not 30 so it drifts out of cycle with the others.

I found my homework, my very old pinhole spectacles (yes an alternative therapy that's probably suss but might help at times with my eye condition so I'll try it) and my unfinished attempts to draft a daily/weekly routine. I couldn't type things up at the library as the accessible computer was occupied. I came home via the craft shop.

Gosh I'm tired. No real reason except things feel out of control. Finding things in the clutter was a plus.

Psychologist tomorrow. It's very hard work, quite upsetting.

Re: Any diagnosed germophobes or hoarders on this forum?

Hi @Dimity , yes, I'm getting a few of my meds as soon as the script says I can, rather than waiting for 4 weeks. That way I hope I can build back up to getting all of them once a month. It's unnecessarily complicated and I wish I hadn't got myself into this situation. I am on 10 meds!

Well done on finding your homework and your "pinhole glasses". How do they work?

Yesterday was a very satisfying work day. Today am at home and determined to clean and tidy, starting with the kitchen. I thought I'd set myself 2 hours.

Good luck with your upsetting psychologist appt today. I assume it's upsetting because the EMDR brings up traumatic memories? Well done for facing it.

Re: Any diagnosed germophobes or hoarders on this forum?

Hmm there'd be a high degree of difficulty aligning 10 meds @NatureLover . I have only 4 but on 28 day, 30 day and 60 day cycles.

The pinhole glasses are solid black plastic with tiny holes - maybe they'll help when I'm blinded by glare. I forget why a former work colleague suggested them, it was years before my current vision problems.

I hope your day of domesticity today was as successful as your work day yesterday.

The psychologist tried something else instead of EMDR today. I'll continue trying tapping or eye movement when I have bad memories. I know she thinks I should see her more often but it's just too expensive. Even the taxis are too much. And it's not directly addressing current difficulties. But it may help in the long run (if there is one).

Tomorrow I'll try to tidy.

Re: Any diagnosed germophobes or hoarders on this forum?

Thanks for explaining the pinhole glasses, @Dimity .

I've heard that tapping is a good thing. Does it work for you?

I didn't do much tidying yesterday after all. I've got 3 library books due back in 5 days, which doesn't help. I'll try again today. I really must clean the kitchen.

Bother - can't see your message, will have to do another post.

Re: Any diagnosed germophobes or hoarders on this forum?

Ah yes - you mentioned the psychologist work is not addressing current difficulties, but that you hope it helps in the long run.

My understanding (and experience) is that helping heal past trauma helps greatly with current difficulties. So many of my daily problems disappeared or eased once I got healing through therapy.

Of course, my damage is too great for complete healing, but I'm able to live my life now without the damage dictating my reactions, mostly. Occasionally they still come up.

I really hope that the same can be true for you ❤️

@Dimity

Re: Any diagnosed germophobes or hoarders on this forum?

Thanks @NatureLover that's very encouraging re therapy. I think eye movement or tapping does help when I have bad memories- I don't know if or how the memories get "processed" but it dulls the sharpness and helps stop the ruminating. Last visit the psychologist encouraged me to "speak to" my younger self.

I had a replacement home help today. I'm not sure if the usual is dropping me.

Are you able to finish your books in time? I was in a bookshop today and could barely read the spines let alone skim any pages so gave up. But i have far too many books already.

I see an exercise physiologist for the first time tomorrow. I'm tired, sore, overweight, unfit, and intimidated. Hope your Friday looks more promising.
