Fear of getting old

Fear of getting old

I turned 50 last year and since then I have been really scared of my age, getting older and dying.

I am petrified of dying, really really scared. I don't know if this is a fear or phobia. It might sound horrible to read this but it is true, I am horribly scared. Turning 50 was a huge depression thing to happen, I was so not happy at all; it really rocked me.

Is this a normal thing that people worry about or is it just me? It's probably just me, I feel i am a bit strange with my thoughts.

Re: Fear of getting old

Hi @hope77

There are services you can access - and packages - I have two - one is a Linkages Package which is what pays for the domestic help I get - and my drivers. A sccial worker helped me get that one - it was hard - I kept falling through the cracks

The Aged Care Package is for having respite - but it's a long story - I organised a week's break in a really great facility - but the deal fell through - I haven't tried again

The Government pays pensioners' cover - and the person pays 80% of their pension for the balace - and you can find out about that from Cenrelink - I was helped by a social worker for the Linkages Package and I pay a mean's test for that

Pensioners are not required to pay a bond

But yes @hope77 - most people want to live in their own homes - it is cheaper for the government to help keep people in their own homes

I want to stay up late at night and stay in bed in the morning - I don't want to get up except to get my medication and an upandgo and visit the loo - and go back to sleep if it so happens

This woman does not get up for breakfast - if people isn't on get up and get brekky or stay in bed an go without

I'm going without

It is my belief - and I have also heard - that many people insist on staying in their home and the only way they will leave is in a box

Ah yes

Re: Fear of getting old

Thanks for the information @Decadian. I think maybe they think I'm over reacting when my husband is not well, early this year when I was in a psychosis my husband fell ill and could not drive or get out of bed for that matter. it was really really hard to get through that time. all I wanted was some help with anything domestic or nursing my husband. my husband has got swelling of his feet (very painful) and he has to take powerful pain killers for this it is a result of 5 major operations for colon Cancer. He also got a foul temper when he is not well. fun and games

Re: Fear of getting old

I don't think you are over-reacting @hope77

You and your husband have serious medical problems - and it sounds as if your husband is a very sick man - regardless of his moods - as you say - not fun

The first place to start is Centrelink - and remember - the squeaky wheel gets the oil

There are times when you might need respite from your husband for you own health

Think about it and make tentative - just in case - plans - it never hurts to be prepared

Re: Fear of getting old

Not a problem @hope77

If you go to Centrelink and register for a package or whatever you chose - and you get a knock-back - keep trying

I had that trouble when I first applied for the pension - DSP - and for a time I had no income - which was pretty disastrous - but I kept on and on

The more you make your presence felt - being polite but persistant - the more chance there is of getting on of those packages when you are ready

It sounds to me as if you really used some of that help right now

Re: Fear of getting old

Squeaky wheel gets oiled' so many of us are backward coming forward, suffer in silence, don't fight for our rights and expect people to mind-read or something. We have to speak, up & yes, politely persistent. Good tip @Decadian. How ya doin'?

Re: Fear of getting old

Thanks @Former-Member

I'm okay - getting ready to travel - I won't say when in the forum - but you will know when I come back

I am trying to detach myself from that website in the States - my resignation was ignored by the management - huge mistake - but because I am still in the site I have sent some private messages to people I have known a long time

So I have had a few people sorry - but the one I just received told me that the manager is under a lot of pressure and not to take it personally - but I do - I take it very personally when I have been a member for so long and a value support member obviously - and new members are welcomed and my resignation ignored

So yes - I feel a bit steamed up right now - whatever pressure people are under I ask myself - who is not under pressure -

So I am venting - and I hope not at your expense - just had to say it

It's okay - I think the steam has stopped coming out of my ears by now

Re: Fear of getting old

Good luck everybody getting their centrelink entitlements.

It makes a difference ..but you have to apply.

I have had a big resistance to applying for caring allowance for my son. The social worker 9 months back told me to apply the date on the form is Sept last year ... I feel so much betrayal saying my son is not well ...by the time I finally made an appointment to go to his doctor ... he was on holidays ... so I have another 2 weeks to wait ... oh welll

I liked reading this thread. I havent been that afraid of getting old or dying, though of course that may change as it comes closer. Mostly I feel death will be a relief and of course hope it is not too difficult. I also have tried to live a healthy active life since my 20s. So I am enjoying this as my sunset time ... not sure how long this sunset will be.

I am not sure about faith ... mentally I had a lot of scepticism ... cos there was too much strangeness going on around religion ..... but I think to have survived and maintained philosophical and spiritual interests I must have faith ... I like to be around people who try and bring the best out of themselves and the best out of me.

I guess I like reading sometimes a lot more than posting. Some of my posts are long and some short .. and I like "liking" just to let you know I am around ... but often I just like to be quiet while at the same time being with people. Even on line ... it feels like we are in a room together ...

Re: Fear of getting old

Soon after I turned 63 I went through a period where I realised that the time left to me was far less than that which had left behind..

I thought of all those things I still want to do and how I didn't want to miss out on my grandchildren becoming adults..... etc etc. This ultimately turned my thoughts to death itself. So started quite a long period of fearing death and then I thought of those who have gone before me.

I became quite obsessed by these thoughts and then my Mum gave me a nudge (metaphorically) and I heard her answer to one of the questions I had asked her during her later life.

I asked Mum how she continued to make plans up to 18 months ahead (she was well in to her 90s) when she might not be still alive. She replied that 'life is for living and that's what I'm doing'.

My fear and obsession from that time on has disappeared and I too am following her credo. I'm living life and planning well into my future. The only thing in life that we can be 1000% certain about is that death will come to each and every one of us. It is the cycle of life.

Re: Fear of getting old

I like your attitude @Kurra Since leaving my marriage I only began making active plans for MY future about a year ago around the time I joined this forum. Beyond just being in a course or choir. So that is very new for me. That I deserve a life. So I went away in January .. it was lovely that I made it happen.

However in making that stance of investing and planning my future ... I opened up a lovely box of chocolates and have a long bucket list now. its worth losing weight if I am going to be around ...

I think I had to work through all the issues around my life and then also understand all the suicides to be able to release SI as being a significant part of my being.

I am sad at the moment but still forward looking.

cheers Apple
