Please help me with my BPD son

Please help me with my BPD son

I have been referring to the SANE forum for some time now for information, guidance and solace, desperately seeking something to assist me with my adult son who is 28 years old and lives with me. Apologies that this post is long but i don't know how else to explain things.

It’s been a very difficult few years to say the least.

My son recently was admitted to the local mental health unit as an involuntary patient. That was as a result of me calling the police, as I was concerned he was going to bring harm to himself, myself or someone else. It started off with paranoia and then an outburst of obscenities at me, made threats and started breaking and throwing things around. In his rage he did say, “call the police”.

He is back home, staying only one night at the mental health unit. The mental teams impression was that he has Cluster B Personality structure with strong Borderline personality traits (of which I already suspected). As he smokes cannabis, regularly, they suggested it might account for his paranoia, however not evident. He has been recommended to seek ongoing counselling sessions with a psychologist, recommending 12-18 months to see change and no antipsychotic drugs were prescribed.

He has been struggling with mental illness or this disorder, for some years now and has never been able to see through any counselling or recommendation for treatment let alone a diagnosis on his state of mind. In one moment he acknowledges he has a problem in the next he denies it. In his words “it is everybody else that has the problem”.

He has always had trouble containing is anger. He acts impulsively and those impulses are not always safe. He has been charged with assault, has difficulty maintaining relationships, as he trusts no one so currently he has no friends.

He is highly paranoid and non trusting of people. He has no qualms in being confrontational with people accusing them of matters untrue. Although a University graduate, he has never pursued his studies, has had a countless number of odd jobs of which he has never been able to maintain because he is terminated or dislikes the people. He is always short of money even when he is working.

His relationship with me is a volatile one. He is often disrespectful, patronising and insulting. As a result I am always choosing my words carefully, choosing the right moment to converse with him, avoiding having friends or family over at times depending on his mood. Stepping on eggshells to say the least. I have also read that book by the way.

He has never had a good relationship with his dad (I have been divorced for 24 years now), as his father never got actively involved in his life. His relationship with his two younger siblings is also a strained one.

I am at breaking point now. Physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted. I have no stamina. I feel lifeless, I feel scared. I have a wonderful partner of 16 years and some wonderful friends. Although supportive (if I let them in) I feel like isolating myself from everyone. They too have been on the receiving end of my son’s fabricated accusations and intimidations and I fear that I will lose those close to me, as his behaviour can be intolerable for someone who doesn’t really understand his disorder/illness.

There are however moments of calmness with my son, he shows compassion and love, but these moments are transitory. When he is calm he questions my every move and every action. It feels like I am being interrogated which causes me to go into a panic, as I fear an outburst is in the works. Perhaps I am overreacting but this is how I find myself. He can be regretful about his behaviour and can recognise he has a problem but in time those thoughts are forgotten and he becomes his paranoid, volatile self.

Sadly I am not convinced my son will see through any treatment, I live in hope that he will but I am doubtful. Instead I live in fear of him, fear of what he will do to himself, to me or to someone else. I fear his aggression, I fear the way he often talks to me. Although more than often scared of him and sometimes resenting him, he is my son and I do love him and it breaks my heart to see him as he is. I do however feel like I falling and when I do hit that ground I may never get up.

I am embarrassed to say that I often wish he wasn’t living with me that he would just move out. Everyday now that thought is there and I feel guilty as his mother that I feel that way. It’s not because I don’t love him but because I am not coping. Him moving out is not an option however given he has never held down a job and never has any money. Where will he go and how will he live. Homeless? Unfortunately I cannot afford to house him anywhere.

I have tried to set boundaries, only to be challenged with aggression and threats. He doesn’t care about boundaries. I have attended counselling to help manage the situation, previously and again now, however I don’t even think that really helps me anymore.

I am reaching out to the world now in the hope that someone may propose something that maybe I have missed. I feel guilty, I feel anxious and I feel sick. I feel like I am failing my son and those close to me. I am desperate, I am in despair and I am lost. I am done.

Re: Please help me with my BPD son

@Saddened

I had done years and years in different situations of all those calm rational interactions with psychotic individuals. My go statement was deep and heart felt. There was nothing else, so no name calling, nothing. It was the end of the line for me.

You cannot live in fear of triggering an episode and he will NOT benefit from feeling he can manipulate you in that way. If you can look him in the eye and mean that you DO NOT REJECT him, then those feelings of rejection are only feelings. So detach from manuipulation. I cannot promise you he wont do anything.

My son has found that he likes his own company and likes having his own place. Yes I did his wash for a while and bought many trolley loads of real food ...

PARC which might be an option for your son ... but they only give those opportunities to people who are willing to work at things. He can choose to miss out ... but away from the mother ... they can usually see more options ... you only need to be a backstop from now ...

the Catt team I called on myself once told me my son had to feel concrete ... that did not help much ... yeah ... the system ... sigh ... but use any of it that helps.

You are right in saying I am living in fear of triggering an episode. There is so much I don’t do and say for that very reason, as does his brother and anyone else who is close to me and is conscious of his behaviour.

Guess I need to take some deep breaths and only hope for a good outcome however It’s dealt with.

Thank you 🙏

Re: Please help me with my BPD son

@Saddened Saddened they should have taken him. I can understand your disappointment. I was thinking can your partner stay over with you while you are going through the process of removing your son? He is an adult and should be out of your house if he cannot abide by the rules and is not seeking help for his mental illness. you should not feel unsafe in your own home. Love peaxxx

Sadly I've stopped my partner from coming to my house currently as my son is confrontational with him too. He harasses him with false allegations of plotting against him, he is demeaning to him and he intimidates him with consistent texts if not face to face. I fear that my son in a state might do something to him too hence why I request my partner to keep away from the house. I'm just trying to protect everyone at the moment.

Re: Please help me with my BPD son

@Saddened I hate to say this but it sounds to me that you need to get your son out of the house which will require alot of tough love from you which is why I believe you need the help of your partner and the police. You need your partner their to support you as I dont think atm you are strong enough to do this by yourself. When My son2 was psychotic it was scary he is 7 foot a big guy and he would intimidate me plus I was also unwell .... the thing I had going for me was his age he was 16 when everything hit the fan and he was recovered by 23. Now he is an angel who takes his medication because he doesnt want to get like that again. Atm your son has everything he wants he has you at his beck and call he can do anything he wants without any consequences to his actions.

I am curious as to why the nurse said he wasnt psychotic .... then again perhaps not as I found the public system very ordinary to be honest. The ball is in your court .... what do you want to do? Do you want more of the same or do you want to make changes for yourself and your son for the better. Which is why I believe as said previously I believe that tough love is the only way forward for your family. Love peax

You are right in everything you say. I'm working myself up to "just bite the bullet" as they say and do what needs to be done for everyone's sake. The process to do what needs to be done may well be a painful one but I know I have no choice. I just need to find the strength as you say and try and overcome my fear of my son to make it happen. Thank you for your support and advice.

Re: Please help me with my BPD son

@Saddened Dear Saddened it is an incredibly difficult position that you are in. You are a good and caring mother who is in an unenviable position. I will tell you something that might help. Once my son2 threatened me with the sharp object and then my daughter I decided to with prompting from the police to take an avo on him. It went to court my son2's lawyer was dead against it, his father was dead against it and the magistrate knocked it back .... BUT the police wrote a lette on official paper to my son saying he wasnt to threaten or hurt his mother. At first he hated that letter but his behaviour improved out of sight after that over time. Now he appreciates that letter. I thought he was heading for a secure mental health facility at a time now he has a future. Given structure there is hope for your son but you dont want him getting himself into trouble by hurting you or anyone else.

Anytime you want to talk just let me know. I am sending you kind and caring thoughts and wishes my friend Saddened. Take care. greenpeaxx

@Bunniekins

Today was not a good day. I tried talking to my son, small talk and of course he was defensive telling me how dare I call the police, I don’t care for him, I should be the one going to jail .....

I said to him he needs help and if he doesn’t get help or show me that he is doing something about it he needs to leave. I said I can’t keep living like this if he doesn’t want to help himself. His comment was he was leaving anyway. I said how, no money, no job and until then what are you doing for yourself in terms of help. I said him leaving in the future is not helping things now. I said to him he can’t keep threatening myself and those close to me and accusing us of paranoid ideations. I told him to show some respect and of course that triggered his rage verbally. In amongst his rage he asks me what would I do to make him leave. I said I could have him evicted. That certainly didn’t help his rage. He said even if he didn’t live with me he would continue to make my life hell and “finish off” my partner and I. I called his father to come over. I certainly didn’t want my partner here given he has been on the receiving end of his abuse and threats.

His relationship with his father is a strained one. He has never really been there for his son and it’s a very volatile one. There is communication between them however it often ends up in an argument. I called him because he is his father and i needed a male for protection. I certainly didn’t want my younger son intervening even though he too received abuse as I didn’t want an altercation between them. My younger son is 25. He father didn’t come as my BPD son called him to take some things and store them in his garage. He told his father he wanted out and was going to stay in his car and didn’t want to be here. He has left before only to come back. His father said me to me he would put him up in a hotel for the night as his partner doesn’t want my BPD son staying with them. I asked him to at least put him up somewhere for a couple of weeks. I even sent him some links to some inexpensive temporary accommodation. The only thing is when it things gets to hard for my ex husband with my son or if my son challenges him he just sends my son right back. I told him I didn’t want him back and wouldn’t take him back. I requested he hold his keys to my house and only allow him to come for anything he might need with him. Will he or my son do that..? I don’t know. I’m still scared. My son may not be here right this very minute but I have visions that he might still come and do something. In his rage he doesn’t think and just acts out. He has told me numerous times he isn’t afraid of going to jail.

I’m very broken hearted right now. I question myself as how I approached and handled things today. I feel guilty in some way. I don’t want him on the streets and I hope his father can help him get on track. At least help him get some housing or something.

It seems whichever way you look at it or do it is still very painful. I don’t know what the outcome of this will be. I don’t know if what I have done has set him off for another sequence of events with regards to his safety, my safety and others safety. I don’t know if things will get worse before they get better 😢😢
