I'M WORRIED

I'M WORRIED

Hi, I'm new to this. But I am determined to get well, to be a better wife, a better mother and to save my marriage. Can anyone relate?

I have been struggling with anxiety and depression for years. I've had some experiences that I believe have contributed to my insecurities and fears and inability to control my feelings. My husband has been telling me for years I am mentally unstable, I act like a child and am irrational. Now he is telling me I have BPD. I do tick the boxes of some of this, but I think at any time in our lives we can all tick the boxes of most personality disorders or mental illness. So when does a personality trait/characteristic become a personality disorder.

My husband had online affairs for the first 6/7 years of our now 15 year marriage!

I saw the texts, the photos, I read the conversations... I have never felt good enuf for him!

I'm worried I haven't dealt with my issues properly and that these issues have contributed to my behaviour and thoughts. I'm worried I'm about tobe labelled/diagnosed with a disorder that isn't really me

Re: I'M WORRIED

You have all been extremely supportive! I am starting to hear everyone bout the emotional abuse! From all of you, from my friends and family and also from Psychologists and Psychiatrist now! Just as he is allowed to feel however he feels, so am I! I just need to learn to ignore him.. BETTER! This morning he told me I'm not raising my sons properly because my sad state affects our sons so he's sending them to boarding school, I asked him if there was somewhere he could send me away to too

I spent the day with my daughter..

Tomorrow I'm leaving for my brothers place, taking my boys away for 9 days

I'll be spending a whole heap of time on me!

I'll be taking this much respected advice with me

Thank you all so much! I hope can I offer the same support and positive advice when I'm 'out of the fog'

Re: I'M WORRIED

Hello dear @Childlike

The problem is my friend that "you won't be able to heal and become inwardly stronger whilst you are around your husband and his abuse". That is the reality. To do the latter you would have to move away from that abuse.

And although I can understand your reluctance to not want to take your sons away from their father - this decision is at your own mental, physical, emotional and spiritual detriment. And very possibly that of your children - your sons run the risk of seeing your tolerance of your husbands disrespect "as the normal way for a man to be - the normal way for a man to treat a woman/wife/partner. This learnt behaviour cou,d jeopardise their own future relationships and happiness - these are the possibilities you really need to think through and evaluate what is the best thing to do that is right for you and the children.

Ofcourse your husband is labelling you as mentally ill (personality disorder) - despite being professionally diagnosed with anxiety; - as that is an excuse to dismiss any credibility and truth in what you are saying to him about his behaviour; by riding you off as irrational, then he does not have to answer to you or have his own bad behaviour questioned. That would mean he would then have to take some responsibility for your condition and would have to work on changing his behaviour. And clearly he does not care enough to do so, so will continue to throw the blame on you for any reason he can find to avoid doing anything about it. Is that the environment you want for yourself and children?

i think if anyone was cheated on and treated with little regard for most of their marriage of 15 yrs, they would be enraged too. That's not your fault - just that you have put up with it for too long. If he doesn't want to be faithful to one person he should not of got married in the first place or remain so. He is not committed enough. But he expects you to do the right thing pfft. I would be angry too. That's using another.

The questions for you to honestly evaluate are : can you ever be happy and heal, be stable and offer a happy, loving healthy home life for yourself and children with the way your husband continues to treat and abuse you? Is that not an unhealthy toxic environment for you and your children? Would you advise other women to stay with their children in a domestic violent home situation? (disrespect, put downs, verbal/psychological abuse, serial cheating is the latter). If so, why? Apply the same values to yourself.

Is your husband truly offering you security and protection by cheating on you, betraying you and putting you down, slowly chipping away at your self confidence, self respect and self esteem? Is he offering you protection by instigating emotional and mental instability in you? Is he offering that for his children by denigrating their mother in front of them? I think not. That is a toxic environment and not one where peace, love, family closeness, happiness and inner growth can be nurtured. Is this the future you want?

These are the hard questions that only you can honestly answer to yourself. And only you can change it. And if and when you decide to we will be there for you. Sending you support, love and hugs 🌷

Hello @Childlike

Just read your last post after I sent my prior one. Wonderful idea to go away for awhile with your sons and have some you time to think things through and ask those hard questions I raised. Well done you! A small step forward. And we will be here for you. Xx

Re: I'M WORRIED

@Childlike,

Take care. While it is reasonable that your partner could be reacting and listless and lonely if you are indeed irrational and/or your depression and anxiety are heavy loads...

It is equally and perhaps more reasonable that he is doing what is called 'gaslighting'. It's a form of abuse. It is when someone begins labelling you and then uses these labels to discredit the validity or logic of your feelings, opinions, and experience.

Is all abuse intentional? I don't beleive so. Sometimes our mental illnesses can inflict abuse on others. But is unintentional abuse ok? No. It is important for anyone to acknowledge and address any abuse they inflict on anyone, intentional or not.

It is why I don't excuse my behaviours even when i was psychotic. It is important to own my behaviours for the sake of others. Also, it means I at least I am being productive now. Excuses hold us in our past and don't allow for growth. X

Re: I'M WORRIED

Hi

I have just joined this forum and have read through a few of the different posts, but when I came to yours I felt much recognition in your story.

I realised slowly that what was happening in my marriage was psychological abuse. He would criticise alot. He would do the silent treatment, never smile, always complaining, etc, etc, etc. I don't think he was doing it intentionally but because of his own mental and emotional problems. I believe he has a sexual addiction. I could never be enough for him. I loved him dearly and for many years I just kept going, praying for help in the marriage and that we could have a good marriage, waiting for it to somehow get better. Finally I came home one day and said to him that we needed to live apart. I truly believe that if I had kept trying I would become ill. We have been apart nearly 12 months now and I still miss the marriage, not him but the marriage itself. He went into a sexual relationship one month after we split. He is still with that woman. I am so glad everyday that he is no longer here and every day I feel so sorry that we could not be together forever like we first thought.

I believe God is OK with this because there has been so much blessing in my life since the split. I know He doesn't want us to divorce but I know He loves us and He doesn't want us to live in anguish. I had to accept that God would be OK with this.

Once we were apart it was like a huge sigh of relief. There was no more walking on eggshells, no more trying to stop the kids from annoying him and no more feeling like there was something wrong with me. My relationship with my kids has bloomed. We laugh and do funny things and sing loudly and dance. We talk openly and honestly about my ex without judging him. They are doing well at school and in life and I am so proud of them.

I still cry, sometimes alot and without control and I would love to have a reliable counsellor but I am so thankful to have found this forum. I hope you are enjoying the time with your boys and hope to hear more from you.

Re: I'M WORRIED

Hi Childlike. I was in an abusive relationship for years. Found it very difficult to get out of it because I didn't want to be alone.
The best thing I ever did was get out of it.
I was very lonely for a long time, but it's better to be alone than be abused.
I attracted other abusive guys, but finally gained confidence and good self esteem.
I hope you make the right decision for yourself and not only for yourself but for your children.
Good you went away for a break. 😀

Re: I'M WORRIED

Good on you Tant for making that decision. I can imagine you get lonely, but thank goodness you have your children.
Do you have a close friend/friends?
I hope you find someone nice to be in a relationship with. 😊

Re: I'M WORRIED

@tant a good counsellor is invaluable. If you don't have one at the moment, go to your gp and ask for a referral to a good one.

Hi @Childlike. I hope you and the kids are doing well. When you are ready, if you need us, please contact us again through the forum. Sending you my best wishes
