surgery & ptsd

Just looking for some coping skills with pending day surgery. Since the psychological trauma of watching my girl die suddenly in 2011, it seems to have split me open, resurfacing & exposing past trauma as if it were yesterday. Even a routine pap smear sent me into a panic attack from the flood of memories, i burst into tears & left it not done. Now u/s has picked up a suspicious lesion the want to biopsy via curettage. I was supposed to have it under GA but with the Asthma & risk of triggering a maj depressive episode (as in my first breakdown & lengthy hospital admission 20yrs back), they're planning a spinal. So how can i be aware of everything & not relive past sexual trauma. They say they'll sedate me but I'll still be aware. Not allowed visitors in day surgery.

And there's that place of having to hand your whole self over to other people, strangers, and being helpless. Then being alone (live alone) after it, nobody to talk to, cry with et while i wait to hear if I'm dying or not (slight exaggeration).

Any tips guys?
I just feel past by use-by date.
Not only might it cause

Re: surgery & ptsd

Hi @Former-Member. I'm so really glad to hear it went well. Love the magazine story. I can relate to that. I had surgery to remove a parathyroid gland last year. It was so very different than being admitted for mental health issues. I was treated like a human not a diagnosis. It really made me think about how you can be treated so differently in the same hospital with two different diagnosis. Anyway I'm crossing fingers all goes well with results. Again great news it went well. Onwards and upwards now😊💜

Re: surgery & ptsd

Just woke to a man calling out 'HELLO' but I'm not going out to check in the dark, especially if i was dreaming dream. Hasn't happened again. Maybe a result or after effect of the GA anaesthetic. Woke a couple of times startled & unable to breathe. Weird. Anyway, just saying hi. Probably nod off again soon.

Hi @Faith-and-Hope

I'm glad you have been there and had that surgery and I hope you were treated well

Aahhh - the drugs they give you for a GA - or even sedation for an epidural surgery and put you in a bad head-space - or different head-space -

So it was a dream - but what an unsettling dream - and you have had PTSD so yes - that sort of thing would happen

It is so good - so fantastically good - that is over bar the pathology

You are in my best thoughts

Great @Former-Member

Everything went well - and those weird conversations we have at times - people don't always make themselves clear and this is more important after a GA - when we are more than slightly off the planet

It reminds me - when I had a burnout with my son - the first one - the psychiatric nurse interviewed me and asked me if I heard voices

"Of course"

"What do they say to you?"

"Well - I can hear you - there's nothing wrong with my hearing"

That was nearly 40 years ago and I still wonder about what she was thinking

Anyway - great you are back @Former-Member - and that the situation looks promising

Hi @Faith-and-Hope, nice to see you, thanks for checking. Its nice.

Only just now woke up (midday). thought it was 8'ish, guess it doesn't really matter on my own here & did have a restless night.

How are you? Still in D3 celebration mode? Its nice to read elsewhere how devoted you are to your family. Being the family taxi driver, keeping them all balanced, clean & fed well, and staying composed yourself... wow... Great job! Make sure you do have that massage, hair cut & time with friends, for you.

Re: surgery & ptsd

Hi Decadian, thanks for your kind words & connecting. Like your 'do you hear voices story' gave me a chuckle, must remember that one. They constantly asked me the question in MH admissions, as if they wanted it so. But honestly, do they think we're that stupid. Its not that simple hey.

Hi @Decadian

I think this post was intended for @Former-Member ........

I have done that sometimes 😊 pressed the wrong name on the drop-down-box. Glad it's so easy to fix through the "Edit" function.

Sounds like @Former-Member got that it was for her anyway.

❤️

Re: surgery & ptsd

Thanks @Former-Member 😊

I am working through my "list of three" this weekend, even though it's not a long weekend for us over here in the west - we had one last weekend - but it does give me Monday for my massage ❣

Have started "proper" walks again these last two days (not just to the coffee shop and back for a morning coffee, although that's a good move too !) ...... ✅, and I have also booked my hairdresser appointment ....... ✅

This is my favourite "list of three" tho, and I'm trying to do that too:

Tawney - I'm glad you liked that story - the best stories are true

What a stupid question - do you hear voices? - it reminds me of Hamlet - his uncle was trying to prove him crazy - and asked the dear lad what he was reading - the reply

"Words, words, words"

Perhaps the MH workers do want to prove us crackers - after all - I was admitted to a private clinic that day
