A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Dressing gown, boots and beanie (mostly because it's a fun beanie - probably overkill really haha) on this morning here @Bunniekins! It will warm up when the sun arrives but it's cool at the moment.

Love the sound of rain 🙂 Hope you enjoy the visit with your mum!

Re: A long rave

Good morning, @CheerBear, @Bunniekins, good to see you both this morning. Just stepped from the bed, only about 6am where I am. Birds sounding louder than usual this morning. Lovely cool breeze flowing through the glass doors.

These glass doors that I mention frequently are big sliding doors that lock, opposite each other in the main room, so that when they are both open and there's a bit of a breeze, the air flows straight through and around me where I'm sitting at the desk. It's like living half outdoors. One of the things I love about this place.

So you are both wearing wintry clothes! I'm in my sleeveless nightie. But I do live in Queensland, jumpers are far into the future still, it seems. I hope it doesn't rain here this afternoon because I'm meeting my old support worker in a park then. Rain is welcome at other times, but not then.

Hope you and everyone here have some good moments happening today.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita @Bunniekins @CheerBear @Former-Member and anyone who's around this morning.

Greenpea I hope you enjoy your Mum's visit.

Mazarita it's great that you can meet up with your old SW. Hopefully you'll be able to talk about your goals and how you are going towards them. And that you enjoy your time together. Your breezy room sounds perfect for summer where you live. My cabin also has 2 sets of double glass doors on the long side, framed in timber that's meant to be cedar. But I haven't had them all open lately because of the mozzies. There's a nice outlook on that side of the cabin of a massive old avocado tree with a hanging basket chair and a hammock and peeping through the gate into our vegie garden at the back of next door. (Bro and sil own both houses).

Mohill I hope you had a pain-free sleep and are feeling better this morning.

It's also very cool here, with a decent rain overnight. Very windy too. I'm in a new pullover I got for $40 reduced from $140. First time I've worn it and it's perfect for this Autumn ish weather. Psychadelic red!

Off to another computer essential tasks class this afternoon with the seniors group and looking forward to it.

What do others have planned for today?

Re: A long rave

Awake again after another sleep, another epic dream. I was at a city-wide rave in the last one! Must have been a new year party because there was a big countdown at midnight and all of us were hoping it wasn't the end of the world. Typical of my dreams. Weird stuff, scary stuff, good stuff, all mixed up.

@CheerBear, yes it is my old Phams worker. Meeting for closure, since we haven't seen each other for about eight months, and readiness for both of us for my graduation at their monthly event that will be next week. That didn't happen at last month's event because support worker was sick that day.

@eth, a red jumper, fiery! And a great discount! Glad you have some cooler weather. And that you will be getting out to another computer class today. Your place sounds lovely. I'd be nagging about the mosquito netting though, if possible. I don't really have long term goals, except continuing to build steadily on what I am doing already. But my support worker and I will talk about how I've been since last I saw her, which has been pretty good. And I'll get a chance to ask her about herself too, and how her life is going since she moved into her new job. It was her leaving Phams that prompted my decision to wind down with them, as well as the fact I didn't want to go through the NDIS process at that stage. Since then there's been a handful of phone support sessions with someone else, but that's all. It will be so nice to catch up with her, as we got on well and she was like a friend in many ways.

Good morning, @Former-Member, @Former-Member, @Shaz51, @outlander and everyone passing through reading this. Hope it's a good or better day for all.

Re: A long rave

Great to hear you have such a rapport with her @Mazarita. When I've had a support worker closer to my own age I've got on fairly well with them too. But at the moment I have a young conservative English 'girl' - maybe late 20s or early 30s. My 4th Phams SW since June last year. She is flexible about how we use the time allocated when it's not an essential appointment, but she doesn't know the area I live in and hasn't thus far discussed my goals with me. They're just a list on a form somewhere in their office. I am trying to encourage her to find out about things for me, but as the 'customer' that shouldn't be up to me I think. And now her hours have been reduced and I suspect she's looking for work elsewhere. Another source of anxiety for me. I really need to have more consistency and routine I can count on with Phams than I'm getting, and have said so several times. Blah blah ranty rant!!

Re: A long rave

It does sound like a frustrating and rather half-baked Phams program you have there, @eth. Have they been much help with the NDIS journey? That was to be the major focus if I'd continued with them. Hope something gives with your Phams and that things improve. I would find it very hard if my support worker was very conservative and 'by the numbers'.
