A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

PS @Mazarita Wild dream here too. Someone IRL who I find very attractive but have NO chance of getting involved with for reasons - was a helicopter pilot flying me to an island I know. I was sitting on his lap (while he flew the helicopter!) and he was asking me about where I'd like to travel and then my past, including my child's premmie start to life. How random is that?!

Re: A long rave

No @Mazarita they haven't helped with the NDIS process at all. And at the moment they haven't responded to my solicitor's request for their file on me.

Re: A long rave

@catgirl, tagging you in here again, in case you feel like chatting this morning. And so as to leave the NDIS thread to that subject. That cheeky cat, 5am awakenings wanting food! Pretty nice way to start the day though.

Re: A long rave

That's a sexy dream with the helicopter pilot, @eth. Thrillseeking indeed, sitting on his lap while he was flying! Nice how dreams take us away from the mundane daily existence, especially when Phams is proving so hopeless for you. Grrrr.

Re: A long rave

All the best from me too @catgirl. Hope today is a better one for you.

Re: A long rave

good morning all @eth @Mazarita @CheerBear @Bunniekins @Shaz51 and anyone else whom I have missed...

as I allowed myself to be affected and behaved like a small child I am trying to move past my reaction...which of course was valid and real at the time...part of one of my major issues..dismissal!

that is my issue though..so I am looking upon the situation as ..I reacted...I worked out why I reacted...ongoing discussion in psychotherapy...acknowledged....next...

@ethred is my favourite colour....I used to read that it signified anger...to me it represented passion about life...a good bargain as well...I bought a beautiful rain proof jacket when I was in England last year...half price...indigo blue....I feel so good about myself when I wear it...

@MazaritaI too have unusual dreams..partly as a side effect to strong sleeping tablet that I take as insomnia that lasted ages led to fatigue...psyche explained worsened my illness and had a sleep debt to repay...since missing son..twin health and now mine have been on and off them..back on them now ..

.last night or early morning ...in half awake state..dreaming ...I was in the middle of a large terraced three story home..apparently mine...I was running as a short term accommodation business...I noticed whilst gardening all of these green potatoes..someone next to me said did you grow those?? I thought what??they were sitting on top of the soil...continued hoeing the soil...then all of these other people appeared and suddenly the main living room of my home was overflowing..people hanging out of the door....one person in doorway smoking...whom would not listen to me .....said would ring police if did not go outside..then loud chatter...woke up!

@ethphams workers ...the person my son had was disgraceful ...I had a support worker allocated as carer where I live...the first one was very good...except too interested..wanted me to report son's phams worker to office of chief psychiatrist...tried to talk me out of going into hospital ..this is some time ago..telling me that I had great insight and emotional intelligence...I would be of such value to the community...she did my head in..I left her talking to my husband...she was full on and totally in my space...well she left I think after visit with me..I have that effect on people..

latest one whom I saw about a year ago...again full on with phone calls...come to centre...eventually went and explained that I was an emotional mess just wanted to get out of house and sit...did not want to talk ...so she then went on to tell me all about her issues...death of parents...so morbid and intense...I felt quite nauseated and left...support group have been trying to get to an outing for about 8 months now..something always came up on the once a month meeting so missed out...

they have something on in march just before I go into hospital so thought even though will be out of action for a while after...might push myself to go to that one...will see

sorry I have done the usual long rave...

thanks for listening in advance

Re: A long rave

All good, @Former-Member. Moving on, yes.

Red used to be my favourite colour as a child and I still like it, as I like most colours really. I too think of red as fiery and passionate rather than angry. I also love indigo, such a beautiful blend of blue and purple, and like the dusk, which I also love. My favourite colour at the moment is probably purple, seem to have collected a lot of it in my wardrobe, my sheets that colour, my throw blanket the same, etc.

Thanks for your account of your dream, @Former-Member. I wish more of us would share the events of our dreams in an ongoing way. I find them fascinating, even when disturbing really. Such a contrast to daily living and yet taking up a large portion of our days. Sometimes I get very psychedelic and ponder how we are two thirds wakeful reality and one third dream reality in all of our minds. What is the nature of reality then? These are the kinds of questions that interest me sometimes.

Sorry too to hear that you have had a pretty bad run with Phams workers. I feel lucky to have had two I liked very much. Sounds like a good plan to go to the support group activity when it comes up before your hospital stay. Long raves always welcome here!

Re: A long rave

Hi @Former-Member purple is my favourite colour. I also bought a purple rain jacket for $35 reduced from $110. They are both much better quality than I could afford at full price, so they should last for years rather than months.

Shame about the support workers and the experiences you've had with them. Seems like it's one extreme or the other - either unhelpful or invasive.

Hope you make it to the gathering you want to go to. When I'm at home I mostly don't want to go anywhere, but when I do get out it always makes me feel better. Hope it works that way for you to. I don't go past the letter box unless someone is with me, so doing the computer course without a support person is a real breakthrough for me.

Hope your day goes well today. How's the declutter going?

@Mazarita

I love the depth of your thinking....I am a very deep thinker...even my psychotherapist admits that he has not met a person as deep as me...he also has told me that it is a very good thing...intuitively I have always felt that...when told enough times that you are different though with mental illness cocktail you start to lean towards the latter when all gets too much...

so your response is reminding me of a gift that I have...has taken a very long time to acknowledge..

I went scouting for my colouring in book "inklings" complete with secret codes..treasures..secret messages and mazes...

today's project has a philosophical phrase "The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one"....Elbert Hubbard....

I rather like that...

the secret coded message encircling the image to be coloured in translates into "Sometimes you win...sometimes you learn"...this one I like very much"

laughed because am using a purple coloured pencil...

@eth loving your purchases...such savings

I bit the bullet and rang the carer centre....based 40 minute drive from where I am...asked for her by name...she was brilliant...she has been thinking of me...she wants to come over to my area and have coffee with me...I said that would be lovely...I can only go on these outings as long as I do not have to talk about anyone's including my own issues...she is trying very hard...I managed to book into cruise ..meeting them halfway for pick up..so husband has agreed to drop me off early morning and pick me up late afternoon about 25 minute drive away...

am actually quite excited about the day out...
