A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

@Former-Member, I'm only a bit over two weeks away from going south for three weeks. So I think I will just let myself off the hook with the video projects during that time and get to them again when I get back. There are no real deadlines. Thanks for your kind words about my recent efforts. I am indeed experiencing some agitation at the moment, perhaps related to adrenaline generated, perhaps to the effects of a new higher dose of my anti-depressant. That is giving me benefits in other ways though, so I'm reluctant to reduce. But will be talking to my psychiatrist about the pros and cons when I see him in a week or so. Sciatica is horrible. I wonder if it could be related to your other major health problem at the moment.

@eth, good that you have a big week, for the same reason I mentioned before, reducing the long and sometimes empty feeling days. I hope you enjoy tomorrow's computer course, and the swim. And I hope the meeting on Friday is productive and pushes forward your claim. Will be thinking of you, knowing how hard that might be to go to that.

My plans are: fasting blood test tomorrow, followed by a long GP appointment to discuss various health issues, followed by B12 shot. Wednesday I have art group. Thursday laughter yoga. Sometime during the week I may get a visit too from my close friend, will probably give her my bed overnight again, as last time. That will be the highlight really.

Re: A long rave

I think we're all posting at the same time!

Hadn't realised your house is on the market @Former-Member. That must be stressful. You seem to have a lot of positivity this morning.

Re: A long rave

@outlander

hello....haven't written to you for a while...nothing to do with you...all me trying to keep up and just not getting there..so have allowed self to fall back when need to.

how are you feeling today?

I read your posts yesterday ...that is bullying and disgusting behaviour..

people who deride or put others down do so because they have so much self hate...they are not in contact with their loving side...they are not people to include in your life....

walk on past those people with your head up high...you have love compassion empathy ..you have far more to offer than people who behave like that..

it is extremely difficult to hear and ignore I know that..

I was teased from a young girl...I have had what I deem as derogatory statements directed at me even up to now at my age...

I am at the opposite end of the scale....I have a very slight frame...long thin legs and arms...petite is the latest buzz word

I am called skinny constantly...

when I started work....one man used to come up behind me and knee me in the back of my knee..saying ooh watch out it will snap...dont stand sideways you will disappear... so I started wearing trousers...instead of skirts...dresses..

now from friends,,even my sister...look at you...dont tell me you have lost even more weight? if you lose anymore you will disappear....

one person asked me if I was anorexic!!

I lost over 7 kg when my son disappeared....I have only started to put that back on...my legs are the last to gain weight and that is what people seem to measure me by..

I asked doctors when I was younger to give me something so that I could put on weight..he got angry with me and told me that I will be thankful when I am older...he sees people all of the time wanting to lose weight...didnt really help me..

now if someone calls me too skinny or along those lines more than once...I tell them that it is just as offensive as calling someone overweight or obese...I would never say that to anyone..I dont see people by their weight..they just look dumbfounded...others glare at me as if how could I be so insensitive..

last time I saw particular group of friends...same old same old...I replied that I had put 5-6kgs back on..response..where in your little finger? her husband said to me that she is jealous because she has put weight on..

those people have issues with their own body image...appearance..style...they are not empathic at all.

now I just put my hand up and say enough! hold my head up high...

I did ask my doctor again because it brought back some of that old patterned thinking...he said no you do not look anorexic...there is nothing wrong with your size..there is something wrong with people who criticise others..

also my son was bullied for so many years..teased for his stuttering....

I have always stood up for anyone being bullied...ridiculed or derided in any way...I will just not listen or accept that in my presence..

learn to like and love yourself....it takes time...keep on practising...start making lists about the compliments that you receive...I bet you are thinking that there aren't many if any..start the exercise and you will surprise yourself..

Re: A long rave

Well my last post has disappeared, because I used an initial to indicate a medication, I think, @eth. I think that is overzealous policing of our posts, to be honest.

Here it is again without the offending initial:

I already had a mini snap with mum on the phone when she suggested it. That's got me anxious too. Just the whole thing of spending the best part of two weeks with my out-of-control mum talking non-stop and in her usual high-wired state of nerves. Yes, anxiety is with me just at the moment. Will be asking my psychiatrist for some medication to help while I'm down there. It's going to be a bigger than usual trip this time with the screening happening too. I am also rather nervous about it. It's a bit of a once-in-a-lifetime event for me, as the screening is all my work, not a group show, a first for me.

Re: A long rave

@Mazarita I just typed you a long reply and when I posted it it came up 'discussion not available'. I checked and my profile says I have an autosaved draft from 4 min ago but I can't retrieve it. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

It was about hypomania potential triggers and support/strategy plans.

Re: A long rave

I agree with you about severe moderation just now @Mazarita. My post had nothing against the rules in it as far as I'm concerned.

Re: A long rave

@eth, @Former-Member, well, I have already fixed it before I even got the email about it. Not sure why eth's post has disappeared though. This has broken the flow of our meaningful conversation. As it happens, my psychiatrist has already said he will prescribe the offending medication for me anyway. Just need to remind him when I see him next time.

I really wish I could hear your thoughts on hypomania though, eth. They could be really valuable to me right now as I may be in something of a mixed hypomanic state.

Re: A long rave

@Former-Member @Former-Member can you either tell me how to retrieve my autosaved draft or tell me what was wrong with my post?

Will try this first @Mazarita

In response to: Re: A long rave

Re: A long rave

@eth, @Former-Member, I'm guessing eth has lost her detailed post because of the technical error that came up, which in turn would have been because of the moderation of my initial reference to a medication. I'm guessing your post wasn't moderated, eth.

Re: A long rave

Hey @Mazarita and @eth - that must have been confusing and frustrating to see all that disappear. I'll forward the autosaved response query to one of the more knowledgeable tech-y workers for you, eth.

We do have our guidelines on classes of drugs and referring to specific medications in the forums. If you do have any queries or want to learn more about it you are welcome to email team@saneforums.com
