A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

thanks @eth

some good ideas there....reminds me how organised I used to be...

I have lost all of that at the moment.....head too busy to think

I did actually manage to sort the floor of one third of my wardrobe which I was very pleased with given my sciatic pain at moment..

long long way to go...

I am clearly a hoarder...there...I officially announce that I am a hoarder..

how is your burn today?

is it today that your family return? I expect that you will be happy to see them...so will the dog of course..

be proud when you tell them how well you managed and enjoyed your space...

what is on the agenda for you this week?

Re: A long rave

@eth, yes, it's the same here really. Hard to do the housework, but satisfying when done, with the bonus of giving me something to do to fill the long days at the moment. But there's not much to do today, except washing and a bit of tidying up really. So will be a long day.

Video - I have about five projects on my plate. All of them seem to be very stalled. Also some interpersonal glitches with new collaborator who I am working with in person for the most part (usually do my collaborations over the net). On top of that, Mum threw me a curve ball the other day saying she and my 85 year old auntie want to come to my screening that will be happening down south. It will increase my anxiety ten fold if they are there and the screening is such an arty experimental event, they won't really like it or be comfortable. Also, I really want the space to catch up with other arty people I haven't seen for a long time. So feeling anxious about that too.

Good morning, @Former-Member

Just a fly-by hello here as I head out the door for a while. Hoping there is a reasonable day ahead of you all, and that your foot is on the mend @eth.

Re: A long rave

@Mazaritagood morning

not good when we dont get enough sleep....I have been having problems...my sciatic nerve is most painful and wakes me up when I am in bed...

I think I managed more hours last night...I woke up thinking where am I? laugh

your dream making you feel anxious might be because there were anxious moments in the dream..as you said relating to where you are at ....perhaps it might be positive as in change ....if your creativity is stuck..something new and wonderful might be waiting to burst forth....

given that you did so well with walking and swimming yesterday....

you have also worked so hard...incredibly to clean your flat.....much energy used...at the same time creating adrenaline...

a step forward for you perhaps....

I have recognised that in myself ....what I thought was anxiety and being stuck...once I started talking about it....I worked it out to be part of the new me emerging...very exciting...

I wish the same for you too xx

@ethhas had some progress too

something in the air?

Re: A long rave

The burn isn't as bad as I thought it might be thanks @Former-Member. A few small blisters which I will try to stop from popping for a couple of days (barefoot at home). This week I have the start of a short computer course tomorrow, the support worker one afternoon and hope to go swimming and then another case conference on Friday about my AAT appeal. This one will be my sil and bro (informal carers), my disability advocate, my legal aid solicitor, the AAT rep. and the NDIS solicitor (who makes me very nervous and emotional). Thanks for asking and prompting me to check my diary. I hadn't clocked that this is quite a big week for me.

Hoping your sciatica settles down quickly. Good on you making such a big start to the de-cluttering. When I last did it I asked myself 'has it been used in the last year?' about each thing and got rid of it if it hadn't.

What do you have planned for this week @Former-Member and @Mazarita?

@Faith-and-Hope

I think that I read somewhere that you were off one day for art supplies of some kind?

how is your creativity at the moment?

on standstill whilst you explore where you are living?

new ideas bubbling from new environment..

listen to me...the person who wants to do charcoal and has only done 2 ever....almost 2 years ago now..

this blasted house being on the market...so much stashed away and in storage has stumped my creativity that took so many many years to find let alone believe...

it will come back...when I am ready

I imagine that you are finding some new places to have coffee...do any of them have cats? I love that idea..

Re: A long rave

Sorry @Mazarita I was typing when you posted. No wonder you're anxious about your Mum and aunty coming to the screening. Sometimes a little white lie isn't the worst thing - e.g. tell them there's no tickets left or it's industry only ..... ??

Good morning to you too @Faith-and-Hope. Burn isn't too bad, luckily. I've been putting calendula cream on it (antibacterial and great for skin repair).

Re: A long rave

Haven’t found the cat cafe yet @Former-Member ..... definitely on the agenda ❣️

My creativity stops when my head or heart are cluttered ..... trying to eake some out with sketches in cafes, so yes I am on the hunt for cafes that inspire a drawing. My water glass then supports turning it to an ink sketch, somI am carrying an ink pen, small jar for water, and a paintbrush.

Charcoal is too messy for a cafe, but inspiring thought there .....
